My current fishing is at 5 and I'm fishing up moat carp in San d'Oria.

I've gone through 6 stacks of insect past with no skill up whatsoever.

Is this normal? How many fish per skill up does it usually take?

Below level...I don't know...50, I'd get at least 2 levels a day fishing to 200 cap. I'd say its normal. Nowadays, I'm lucky if I even get .5 total a day.

Kind of off topic, but if you're targeting moat carp you should head to Knightswell in West Ronfaure, the only fish that will bite your balls of insect paste will be moat carp.

Fishing skill is slow. Thankfully, fishing skill is also not that important.

Thanks for the replies. Trying to be able to fish up my own mats for black ink.

The ring that gives significant upgrades to skill ups, are the fish for that contest usually high level?

Fishing is slow skill ups.

My best advice is this.

Fish because you really enjoy it. Because the mini-game of fighting and catching the fish is fun for you. Because you can do it while you watch TV or something else in real life. Because you enjoy piling up things i your inventory that you can sell on the AH or can NPC. Fish because you like it.

That was my attitude when skilling up and, honestly, the levels just flew by almost not noticed. I hardly remember them, except the good moments like getting a .3 skillup once, catching a Bastore Bream in South Gustaberg when I was something like level 28.

I stalled out at whatever level I am now (see below) when I began to be able to spend less time in the game than I used to.

But when I do get time to play these days, as often as not I let myself get pulled out to Talla-whatever Cove in the WOTG area, and happily fish with lures, making Gil, and the skillups happen when they happen, and those skillups are great when they happen.

I am told that it gets frustrating and aggravating to approach it otherwise.

Skillups really start to drop off after 86 in Talacca Cove if you're using Shrimp Lure and catching Dil, Ahtapots, and Mercanbaligi. Mercs cap out at 86 which is about 1/3 of your catches there. Not really related to anything. Just wanted to throw that out there.

It makes reeling in fish much easier the higher you go.
If your skill is way above the skill of the fish your trying to reel in, you won't always need to wear it down completely before hitting the enter key.
To a low level fisherman who's just interested in moat carps then I guess it won't matter too much to them over skill if they aren't going to take it very far.
