Smiley: moogleHello again, Kupo!Smiley: moogle

The Valefor Culinarian's Guild is proud to announce the Second Edition of the Vana'diel Cookbook. Due to the positive response from cooks and inkjet manufacturers, the second edition is packed with 1/3 more culinary goodness. (Note: a newer beta of version 3.0 is now also available.)

Features in the Second Edition:
  • 1) Updated prices (July 2005), more recipes and 72.9% fewer typos
  • 2) HQ1/2/3 results for all recipes
  • 3) Guild points! # of synths to max, GP/gil and an appendix listing all GP recipes in order of value for money
  • 4) All known vendors for ingredients
  • 5) Opening hours and holidays for vendors
  • 6) Auction house categories for all recipes with blanks for writing prices
  • 7) Where and how to catch a few of the fish ingredients
  • 8) Food effects appendix now lists the actual major stat # for each recipe
  • 9) New appendix lists recipes that do not require fire crystal

  • Version 2.1: Version History, Ogre Pumpkin hours (thanks Kittyn) and corrected Vegetable Gruel recipe (flour only used in variation #1)
  • Version 2.2: Tavnazian Tacos +1mp/hp recovery (kudos Skorpeeo), logging acorns, gardening onions
  • Version 2.3: Pet Food Delta bird eggs and yield (ty ty KidCisco)

  • Features in the first edition: Vana'diel Cookbook 1.0

Possible additions for the next edition (no time soon):

  • 1) More info on where/how to catch fish (the sticky on this topic is a bit outdated)

  • 2) Info on signable/not signable items

  • The Van'adiel Cookbook - Valefor Second Edition (2.3) is available for download in Word or PDF format from the following:

  • Valefor v2.3 - Microsoft Word (1609 kb)

  • Valefor v2.3 - Adobe PDF (1161 kb)

  • Valefor v2.3 - Compressed (Zip) Word (280 kb)

  • Note the PDF doesn't show the pretty Wingding clock for opening hours, but you can still see the needed subscripts after the ingredients.

    Instructions:

Click the link above. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Free" button. At the bottom of the next page there will either be a timer or a vanadielcookbook2..1doc/pdf/zip link. If there is a timer wait until it gets to zero and the link will appear. Click the link to download the file. (Sorry it's complicated but it's the best free way to get the needed bandwidth.)

MHMU reminds everyone to always virus-scan downloaded files and only runs macros you know should be there. There are no macros in the Vana'diel Cookbook.

    Happy cooking!

I just wanna say this is AWESOME!!! Thanks for taking the hard work. This IS the best cookbook out there with the list of ingredients for each recipe and where to get it. I wonder how you have the recipes for some foods that are not even in ffxi.cannotlinkto

This is better for the advanced crafter who knows what they want and do not lvl their cooking in a cookie cutter style. Again, THANKS for doing this dude!

    Yes very nice.

A note about Ogre Pumpkin. The Jeuno vendor doesn't sell ogre pumpkins all the time. So maybe add a note or somtething. :)

PS LOL you can't do this & not take cooking up to 100! :-p

    This is EXCELLENT!

So much better than the crappy recipe list I've been using for so long. This thing is really comprehensive...I mean, you've got EVERYTHING I could want in here! Great job!

The GP item information is a wonderful addition, and will surely help me get my guild items (it's very convenient to be able to see which items get you the most bang for your buck).

Thanks so much for all the hard work you did on this!

I hope my boss doesn't grab this off the printer before I can make it down the hall! That would be an interesting converstation.

Nice catch Skorpeeo. Tacos seem to give +1 HP recovery while resting and the same for MP recovery.

A couple other adds... Unless/until there is some major overhaul, the link to the current 2.x versions will be up top and I'll try to fix any errors and do incremental additions.

Anything added will be listed in the new additions list with the version # next to it (so you don't need to download it to check).

I fixed the tacos and am working on some new sources for acorns and wild onions; I'll upload next incremental version when this info is verified.

Oh and speaking of info you'd pay for, if anyone knows how to mail merge/subdocument import mixed font data into a multi-column Word document without having the columns broken by a section break (subdocs) or the formatting being reset (mail merge) I'd be ever-so-grateful for a PM. Hey, someone might know....

Hi, this is an amazing reference tool but I can't print it out properly. I can read it perfectly on the screen when I open it with Acrobat, but when I try and print it either gives me an error saying the wingdings font isn't loaded (on my home and work pc) or it prints without an error, but all screwed up (work Mac).

I really want to have this on paper in front of me! Thanks in advance.

Hmmm ... I've been considering dumping the Wingdings, which I love but which don't come up consistently in my PDF maker (no cute little clocks). I hoped that using PDF would embed the fonts (for printing) but the free tool I have doesn't seem to do that. I've been looking at one that does but it is a little pricey. Maybe I'll do a trial download and see if that fixes the issue.

I'mnna go have dinner and I'll give this a think.

Bovine, I assume you don't have Word available to you, or get same error on that? What version of Acrobat (and Word if applicable) are you running?

ALL INTERESTED: I'd just respond to this in personal message but since most guides etc on this site are html I don't know how many people have printing issues (I assume everyone is printing this). Please let me know if you have printing/viewing issues as I'm in the very early stages of a complete rewrite and now's a good time to incorporate changes like this.

I just wanted to thank you for your work on this. It is a tremendous piece of work. The reason it is so superior to every other guide out there is because it allows you to make your own guide, in essence, by giving you the information to make the right choice for you at each given step along the way.

I have thrwon out all of my other cooking guides and have gotten from 39 to 57 about a week of very casual gaming. My cooking skill had lain dormant at 39 for over a year and this cookbook renewed my fervor for it.

    Thanks.

Simply awesome. Not only is it extremely useful, you can build your own guide based on prices with the listing on the back. Excellent.

Quick mistake I found. In "Fish Broth" you have listed "Bastore Bream x4". This should be "Bastore Sardine x4" instead. This is the cap 37, yeild 2 recipe. Typical AH price is 1 stack for 1-2k. Easily fishable in Port Windy.

    EDIT: Bastore Sardine (10) Mithran/Halcyon+Sabiki
Port Windy, Port Bastok, Kazham, Port Jeuno (Use composite rod since mithran and halcyon can break)

    Dualbios -

You may want to use the new beta of the cookbok (it's basically Cookbook v 3.0).. Doesn't have the latest foods but the contents are an update of 2.x with lots more locations and newer prices.

Here's the link to the beta thread:
    http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24&mid=1131422026263166038

I'll come back and edit this with a link to the latest 2.x as well in case you prefer that.

Edit: I do recommend the 3.0 beta, but here are the PDF version and the Word document version of v2.3.

    Enjoy!

I am having difficulty downloading the adobe version. It says something like file deleted and won't let me download. However, I can get word version.

Any advice how I could get a copy in adobe format?

Just for the record, the beta version 3 is I think better than this one, but both are out of date. Neither one has recipes from the expansion. This was current as of just before tentacle sushi.

I was working on a database-driven version of this where you could push a few buttons and it would spit out the current document. Unfortunately, a wrist injury left me unable to do all the programming necessary to finish it. And trying to get good open-source stable database software (with forms and reports) was like pulling teeth.

I might continue the work at a future date, but it probably won't be very soon.

Oh, and the meat mithkabob recipe is wrong in the version 3 beta (that one looks like meat jerky or something); per somepage it should be:

    Made from Recipe:
Main Skill: Cooking (38 - Novice)
    Crystal: Fire
Ingredients: Kazham Peppers, Cockatrice Meat, Mhaura Garlic, Wild Onion
    Result: Meat Mithkabob x6
    HQ #1: Meat Mithkabob x12
    HQ #2: Meat Chiefkabob x6
    HQ #3: Meat Chiefkabob x12

The recipe in version 2 is correct.

What's up with the recent spate of necroposts?

Anyway...it's likely the file is no longer hosted because the Original Poster last edited his post in December of 2005. You may also find a reluctance among crafters in highly consumable markets to aid potential future competitiors in markets already hit hard by deflation and RMT.

My recommendation would be for you to visit Somepage's cooking database to learn all about cooking recipes and their levels; then, I'd urge you to learn everything you can about how Regional Merchants function in the game. Those resources and a little time researching AH prices and sale frequencies should be sufficient for you to figure out how best to proceed.

Many people would consider this request naive at best, rude at worst. In addition to the fact that there are numerous other resources you could look up yourself with a few minutes and Google, it's unlikely that this file is readily floating around after 18 months. Plus, by requesting a word file, you've just let folks in a public forum know that you'll accept attachments from strangers. I hope for your sake you have a decent anti-virus.

Google is your best bet to find the guide you're looking for if it went somewhere on the web to die. But again, make sure you're AV is functional, first.

    Good luck with that.
