Im surprised they went with "zones" again and not one big world like wow/tera/etc. Im guessing it allows them better control and a bit higher on the graphics but no flying is kind of a buzzkill. I mean They might have airships later but they are no where near as fun as personal flying mounts.

I actually think flying mounts are really destructive overall. The moment they're available, players stop experiencing the world. ALL the effort to create a vibrant world with its pathways, monsters, hidden routes, etc. It's just completely ignored from then on.

People are less likely to encounter one another out in the world, which means a sharp drop off in your chance to get emergency help. People can use them to afk in dangerous zones, which defeats the purpose. Etc.

All a flying mount does is offer a direct route to any destination. And I don't think that's even something that should be considered universally good in game design, particularly not when it comes with such heavy sacrifices.

Ya, flying mounts made Everquest 2 a whole different experience.

I spent the remainder of my night last night (until about 2am EST) playing with the harvesting class. I did Botanist for a while earlier in the day but did Miner until the end. Reached level 16. The stat system for harvesting is pretty good. Gathering Skill = higher chances of finding items. Perception Skill = Higher chances of finding HQ items.

Still haven't figured out exactly what all the skills do. There are skill like "Discipline" and "Piety". I imagine Discipline has to do with spell casting, Piety with white magic spell strength?

Disciple of the Field classes are a pain to level, but the Field Levelmetes make it a lot faster. And once you get to level 15, get the level 15 primary and secondary weapon, they give you a big boost to Perception, making HQ finds a lot easier. HQ finds give you 250% or so bonus to Exp. Of course the miner level 15 class quest was to find 15 HQ versions of a level 13 or 14 item. That took a while.

I hope Phase 3 final next weekend last a bit longer than the standard. Want to try out the crafts a bit to decide what to do on the permanent characters. Need a level 19 Disciple of the Hand to unlock the quest to get Materia melding.

Get the PC version. Cheaper (22.50 (reg) or 37.50 (ce) from GMG if you act soon) and you can use the native game controller support to have identical controls to the PS3 if you so wish. Plus you get the benefit of the better hardware, and unless you setup your PS3 as a computer and sit down at a keyboard, communication amongst people are a lot easier.

I'd only buy the PS3 version if I didn't have a PC.

I probably will, I just want a graphical comparison before hand. I'm confident my PC would do fine, at least on lower settings, but it's worth being sure.

I have a loose plan to build a gaming rig in the future, but that's not going to happen until after some major life changes/expenses get handled.

I'm at the "slightly low" rating when I have the benchmark settings at low. But I seriously doubt that's the extent of video options, so I want to look in game. Particularly because the textures are still pretty high-res even on low settings. I could stand to bring environmental textures (like ground) down more.

Worst case scenario, I buy the PS3 version and use that until I migrate to the PC.

Only reason I haven't played much is because I'd rather not have a lot of effort wiped before P4. For now, I figure the game will entertain me for a few months, but I'm ultimately concerned about endgame and how "forced grouping" will pan out. And, well, tells not working when in dungeons and such is pretty @#%^ing dumb, too.

I would say go with the PS3 version. Because you can always get the client on PC and its cross platform but its usually harder to find the disk for consoles. Get PS3 version, play PS3 or PC (Just get the client). You could do it the opposite way but you would have to find the disk Used or borrow it from a friend, maybe SE will let it be D/L via store for free ?

I got a 4089 on Max (High Performance, 34 Avg. FPS) and a 5599 on High (Very High Performance, 46 Avg. FPS) at 1920x1080, on a 3.2 GHz Phenom II x4 955, 8GB DDR3 1866, and a 2GB 560GTX ti, which I thought was fairly decent. I usually go with High settings and then tweak shadows down a bit, since that tends to have a decent framerate gain and shadows aren't critical to my enjoyment of the game.

I forget what I had score wise but setting the game to very high in game gave me a little bit of fps loss (I couldnt find a counter only judging by eye)I did most of the Beta on High, figure Ill worry about High settings once actual game comes out and is finalized, also after someone puts out a guide showing what each option does and how it affects fps.

Usually in the first month people figure out the best settings rather quickly.

Yeah, it was enough fun to drop twenty bucks on the preorder. Hopefully, I won't regret it.

Also, just for the hell of it, I ran that benchmark, I managed a 6760 on max settings.

I'd be shocked if it didn't come with a free month. They need people to actually play the game to get subscriptions, which is the real reason a free month is included in the purchase price of MMOs.

Few people are going to subscribe to something they have never experienced a trial of, particularly not if it requires them to purchase the game on top of it.

But if they can get a month of enjoyment out of it, regardless of whether or not they'd really invest much beyond that, the purchase price isn't so bad.

With P4 potentially carrying through short of any major bugs, I'd almost say people have their "free trial" to get a feel for the game. Though, that doesn't quite solve those who get drawn in by advertising once SE starts running TV commercials.

That argument makes no sense to me. Open betas are incredibly common with MMOs nowadays. Why would FFXIV be any different?

SE has every possible reason to want as many people buying this game as possible. The real money is in subscription fees. The only way to get subscription fees is to sell the game to people in the first place.

FFXIV:ARR has a lot more to prove than most MMOs. Requiring people pay for their first month on top of the purchase price is just absurd.

You know what I was thinking of? Expansions. The WoW Battle Chest does in fact come with 30 days time, but new expansions do not come with a time card. For some reason I was thinking it didn't come with any time at all and was trying to figure out how that works. I agree that a subscription-based MMO should be coming with a month of game time with the initial purchase.

XI had commercials, not many, but they were there. XIV also had commercials, but mostly of cutscene footage. They didn't last long.

It would behoove SE to actually try to advertise in the west. Maybe not in the sense WoW paid celebrities to pretend to play or Rift's "We're not in Azeroth anymore!" campaign, but certainly more than some music and some cutscenes. Not everyone is going to know or care about 1.0. Not everyone trolls gaming sites, knowing what releases when or even how it's been reviewed. The hardcore element of MMOs may hate the casual base, but they're required. And it's hard to argue that the more money SE gets from the game, the more they can do with it. Of course, I'm forever worried about money XIV makes going back into XIV first, as XI suffered because it didn't.

Well, they are apparently successfully stress testing the servers with this Duty Finder.

Not but barely an hour into the Beta test, and all world servers are down and the forum servers are clogged up to the point where it takes almost two minutes to load the forum pages.

Just after I posted that, everything came back up.

The Duty finder looks like it was well thought out. Not just four random people, it tries to create a balanced part. One tank, One healer, Two damage dealers. For this phase of the testing they removed the normal NPCs for entering dungeons and are forcing everyone to use the Duty Finder.

I tanked the first instance, Sastasha. Pretty fun. Duty Finder grouped me with a healer and two ranged DPS, so it was fairly easy. Got a new helmet. Only thing I didn't care for is that you have to click the Loot box to see what dropped. It doesn't just automatically pop up with the item and Need/Greed/Pass buttons. Maybe it's a settings option.

Also, what's the shortcut to reply to /tells? Smiley: lol

If I remember correctly, there is also an large icon in the lower right that tells you there is loot that you haven't rolled/passed on yet. Pretty sure you can click that, or press Select/Back (PS3/360) to 'tab' over to it, and get the Need/Greed/Pass icon as well as the coffer.

I'm going to re-run a few of the dungeons to see what the drops are. Only got two useful pieces doing the 3 dungeons the first time.

Yeah, there is. I just find it annoying to have to either open the chest yourself or click that icon. It should be like in most other modern MMO where when anyone in the party opens the chest, the item pops up on everyone's screens. It just seems unnecessary to have to click the icon in order to see what dropped, though I can see the value of having such an icon in case sh*t is going down and you close out of a loot box.
