I figured I'd get in. I had an active FFXI account for about 5 or 6 years, and that pretty much guaranteed me original FFXIV beta testing. And while I never had purchased FFXIV, everything seemed to hint pretty heavily at preference to previous FFXI/XIV players.

Beta 3 Part 1 turns off in about 13 hours, so best get crackin'!

I got in too. Played yesterday, looks nice, and plays way better than the last edition of FF14. Minor things here and there can be fixed but it is looking like it is moving in the right direction at least. I just hope they don't rush through the Beta process like they did last time. It is miles ahead of where it was, but I think SE should be more attentive to the things players are suggesting. They didn't last time and we saw the results. It plays fun so far...but its new, and I am not sure how long that "fun" can last to a long time fantasy MMO player. (bored bored bored.)

As someone who is jealous...

I figured it's worth mentioning, because I COMPLETELY forgot, that there is an FFXIII-2 demo in the PSN Store. So anyone who was curious can try it out.

So far it's a lot better than original FFXIV Beta. (though, that's not saying much).

I can't help but think it'd be better with a keyboard... maybe I should plug one into my PS3 and see what happens? I see a bunch of people around me talking to each other, they must be typing.

If you want to play any MMO on a console, you will need a keyboard. Ok, maybe not NEED, but I would never dream of not using one.
FFXI had some slow hunt and pick system to chat with- I don't know if it's in FFXIV, but it's was so ridiculously slow that you'd get left far behind in any conversation.

Also, you might be seeing PC players, who already have keyboards. PS3 and PC will be on the same servers at launch, so I see no reason they would separate them for phase 3.

FFXIV has not had a chat client for 1.0 and beta. I have yet to play an MMO with its own voice chat system, so I don't know how common of a practice is it.

For PC, it is assumed PC players will set up their own chat groups, if desired.
I don't have a PS3, but I assume the system has some form of group chat? If so, that would be your only option.

I know how useful voice chat can be (my FFXI group uses it frequently), but since not everyone likes using voice, I believe SE recognized this and wanted to develop a game that would not require it. I do not remember them ever responding to questions about voice chat, so it might not have come up, but I don't browse the forums constantly either.

The devs have so far been pretty receptive to feedback, so you could comment it on the feed back sections of the beta forums and they'll probably give a reply one way or the other, with their reasoning. It would be nice to have cross-platform chat, however.

Well, the only MMO I know of that included it was WoW. And no one ever used it, because it was awful.

But if you're going to have a PS3 version, it just seems to be that native support would be necessary. I mean, PS3 players can't join in on any other voice services...

You can use keyboard. I was using a wireless one.

Combat still awesome with the controller though.

I assume you can accomplish the same with the PS3 Keyboard that plugs into the controller, I don't have one so can't confirm.

You can get your run of the mill wireless keyboard and just plug it into the USB jack. That's what I used on the 360(For ffxi) and it also works on the ps3 although I haven't tried it for any game that requires a serious amount of typing on there.

(Mines an HP brand. I heard not all wireless keyboards work)

Ya I am using a cheesy Logitech Wireless Keyboard + Touch Pad. On my PS3. I find it to bulky I think to play with a controller though. It sucks because I like the control of the controller more than the keyboard, but the keyboard has its obvious advantages. So I think the little PS# compact keyboard would be cool.

https://www.coolshop.co.uk/catalog/product/58068-official_sony_ps3_wireless_keypad_uk_layout_ps3

Not bulky and fills the purpose of typing. I dunno I like gamepads even when I played FFXI I used Gamepad + Keyboard, but I also used Skype so not very much typing took place. (other than trolling in Jeuno.)

You still have a chance. (If you signed up for the Beta, that is). I think they give out new batches of keys with each Phase. And the next Phase starts up on Friday morning, 2am PDT, and ends Sunday morning at 2am PDT.

Yeah, I actually don't think it's understandable. It has a worldwide install base, the hours should be more sensible. It definitely wouldn't kill them to add an extra 10 hours on and shift the hours slightly so that folks actually have a chance to play it a bit

I mean from a standpoint of Square Enix. Pretty sure over the years of me playing FFXI, maintenance, etc. were always done based on the JP times. I've always assumed that the crew was relatively small (company speaking) and all stationed in Japan.

They need to have people equipped to handle the English (and other language) customer service, translation, etc. So they're probably working with offices in both the US and international offices of SE.

The beta ends at 6 PM on Sunday in Japan. That's a weird time to begin with. /shrug

If you aren't an old FFXIV player, and are looking to get into ARR, pretty sure GMG has the best deal on the preorder, you can get the collector's edition for 37.50USD, or the regular pre-order for 22.50USD.

I was only in the Beta for FFXIV, so I didn't see what they had done trying to fix it, but ARR looks like an entirely different game. Though I did start a character in Limsa Lominsa on ARR and it looked very similar to what I remember Limsa Lominsa was in the previous version's Beta. Even similar monsters outside.

So apparently Square believes that there is no point in developing games in HD. I'm looking for a site with direct reporting of it, but what is said is roughly:
Naoki Yoshida wrote:
Sales on the current HD game consoles aren’t even that good. Especially looking at the Japanese market, honestly there is no business merit to making HD games now.

Even considering E3, with current games looking as good as they do now to the average person, I think it will take some time for the change to the new hardware and for it to be widely accepted.
I guess it makes sense when they also said they were going to focus on social games.

The zone redesigns were done in such a way as to make it feel familiar, but also to eliminate the copy-paste environments and make each new smaller zoned area have micro-climates and be distinct enough to warrant having its own name. The Black Shroud and Gridania got the biggest makeover by far (no more ******* tunnels everywhere), but they were the worst offenders of the three city-states to begin with.

Ul'dah is almost exactly the same, but now you can just step out of the gates and go outside instead of going through a series of hamster tubes.

SE hasn't exactly been seeing incredibly returns on most of their titles, which is probably part of the problem. I feel like they don't really know where to spend, and where to hold back.

There's definitely a huge market for HD games. But they have to make HD games people want to buy.

Oh, and it turns out if you are in the PS3 Beta, you can download the PC version and play too. PS3 Beta just gives you the PS3 Code for the client download, as well as the general Beta access code.

PC Version has native controller support. Detected my wired 360 controller and mapped keys accordingly, even changing all the text and icons to match the buttons as is standard for games that support the 360 controller for windows. With gamepad enabled in the options, the standard PC hotkey layout switches back over to the console controller layout.

The subjob (or, subjob like) system is a bit different than FFXI, I never saw it in FFXIV cause I only played the Beta and didn't go that far. Rather than assigning a job you just get to pick abilities and traits to slots that unlock as you progress.

I was doing some story line missions and ran into one that was very difficult (solo) and I decided to take a trip to the next town over and unlock Conjurer (for cure). Assigned Cure to my Thaumaturge. I was pretty much invincible.

Thaumaturge have basically two modes:
Fire - High Damage at the expense of massive MP costs and no MP regen
Ice - Low Damage, but you get a nice boost to MP regen.

Swapping between the two during battle is key to being efficient. But I just kept myself in Ice mode, blasted away at the enemy with relatively low damage spells and used my additional Cure ability from Conjurer. I could have swapped back and forth between Fire and Ice and made the fight go by quicker, but I had lost the fight once, and crashed (memory issues I think, the game had been running since noon), so I just wanted to ensure that I won.

Is the Beta a weekend only thing? Cause if it is Im not getting any time to play, Im on terrible net and wont get a chance to DL it til overnight and if it ends tomorrow it may be pointless.

My Only question atm is it more user friendly? I remember the first beta was terrible I couldnt figure out how to release for a little bit and the whole system was all confusing.

The beta ends in about 4 hours I think. Starts Friday at 2am PDT and ends Sunday at 2am PDT. Same as last weekend I think. It's much more user friendly. So much different than the FFXIV Beta that it doesn't make sense to list all the things. So far everything is good.

I guess I'm going to go to bed now. While it would be nice to keep going, I think I need to sleep... the story sounds interesting so far, and there are quite a few cut scenes, a few have voice acting. They seem to have pulled in some from FF6. They have Magitek armor and factories. (Not really spoilers, I guess).
