So apparently Square believes that there is no point in developing games in HD. I'm looking for a site with direct reporting of it, but what is said is roughly:
Naoki Yoshida wrote:
Sales on the current HD game consoles aren’t even that good. Especially looking at the Japanese market, honestly there is no business merit to making HD games now.

Even considering E3, with current games looking as good as they do now to the average person, I think it will take some time for the change to the new hardware and for it to be widely accepted.
I guess it makes sense when they also said they were going to focus on social games.

If you aren't an old FFXIV player, and are looking to get into ARR, pretty sure GMG has the best deal on the preorder, you can get the collector's edition for 37.50USD, or the regular pre-order for 22.50USD.

I was only in the Beta for FFXIV, so I didn't see what they had done trying to fix it, but ARR looks like an entirely different game. Though I did start a character in Limsa Lominsa on ARR and it looked very similar to what I remember Limsa Lominsa was in the previous version's Beta. Even similar monsters outside.

The zone redesigns were done in such a way as to make it feel familiar, but also to eliminate the copy-paste environments and make each new smaller zoned area have micro-climates and be distinct enough to warrant having its own name. The Black Shroud and Gridania got the biggest makeover by far (no more ******* tunnels everywhere), but they were the worst offenders of the three city-states to begin with.

Ul'dah is almost exactly the same, but now you can just step out of the gates and go outside instead of going through a series of hamster tubes.

SE hasn't exactly been seeing incredibly returns on most of their titles, which is probably part of the problem. I feel like they don't really know where to spend, and where to hold back.

There's definitely a huge market for HD games. But they have to make HD games people want to buy.

Just calling it "Final Fantasy" is a money grubbing strategy.

Just releasing a game is a money grubbing strategy.

(Why else do developers release games? To try to make money)

Seriously, what we need is fewer games with more DLC. I mean there's no reason for buying a game if I can't beat bonus levels with a giant lazer-death-ray while accompanied an optional companion dressed in a stripper outfit.

Mostly. Square has become the McDonalds of the gaming world, manufacturing subpar shlock and making money off name recognition.

I somehow managed to completely miss Olorinus's post. I thought we were still talking about SE sucking in general.

I'm able to explore FFXIV's systems a bit more now that I actually have a day and a half to play rather than just a few hours. Enjoying it... which is bad because it will make me want to get a monthly sub...

Oh, and it turns out if you are in the PS3 Beta, you can download the PC version and play too. PS3 Beta just gives you the PS3 Code for the client download, as well as the general Beta access code.

PC Version has native controller support. Detected my wired 360 controller and mapped keys accordingly, even changing all the text and icons to match the buttons as is standard for games that support the 360 controller for windows. With gamepad enabled in the options, the standard PC hotkey layout switches back over to the console controller layout.

Here.
http://forum.square-enix.com/ARR-Test/forums/196-Test-Client-Download

The PS3 beta email had a link to a forum post on how to download the PS3 client. In the same subforum is the how to for the Windows client. I'm not sure but you probably have to log in to your SE Account to get access to it.

The subjob (or, subjob like) system is a bit different than FFXI, I never saw it in FFXIV cause I only played the Beta and didn't go that far. Rather than assigning a job you just get to pick abilities and traits to slots that unlock as you progress.

I was doing some story line missions and ran into one that was very difficult (solo) and I decided to take a trip to the next town over and unlock Conjurer (for cure). Assigned Cure to my Thaumaturge. I was pretty much invincible.

Thaumaturge have basically two modes:
Fire - High Damage at the expense of massive MP costs and no MP regen
Ice - Low Damage, but you get a nice boost to MP regen.

Swapping between the two during battle is key to being efficient. But I just kept myself in Ice mode, blasted away at the enemy with relatively low damage spells and used my additional Cure ability from Conjurer. I could have swapped back and forth between Fire and Ice and made the fight go by quicker, but I had lost the fight once, and crashed (memory issues I think, the game had been running since noon), so I just wanted to ensure that I won.

Is the Beta a weekend only thing? Cause if it is Im not getting any time to play, Im on terrible net and wont get a chance to DL it til overnight and if it ends tomorrow it may be pointless.

My Only question atm is it more user friendly? I remember the first beta was terrible I couldnt figure out how to release for a little bit and the whole system was all confusing.

The beta ends in about 4 hours I think. Starts Friday at 2am PDT and ends Sunday at 2am PDT. Same as last weekend I think. It's much more user friendly. So much different than the FFXIV Beta that it doesn't make sense to list all the things. So far everything is good.

I guess I'm going to go to bed now. While it would be nice to keep going, I think I need to sleep... the story sounds interesting so far, and there are quite a few cut scenes, a few have voice acting. They seem to have pulled in some from FF6. They have Magitek armor and factories. (Not really spoilers, I guess).

In case you had not guessed. Beta starts up again this Friday, 2am PDT. Ends Sunday, 2am PDT.

Pinky: "Gee, Brain, what do you want to do tonight this weekend??"
Brain: "The same thing we do every night weekend, Pinky—try to take over the world! Spend 15 hours straight playing FFXIV..."

It's probably better that I didn't get in, anyway. I haven't seen a single friend in 3-4 weeks now, primarily due to work. I should probably get on that...
