cause it's being recreated as a standalone game.

Kotaku wrote:
It's been discussed before, but now it's official: smash hit zombie survival mod DayZ is being turned into its own game.

Dean Hall, the mod's creator, will be overseeing the game as project lead, and it'll be published by Dean's co-workers (and ArmA creators) Bohemia Interactive.

Hall says the game will "follow the Minecraft development model", which basically means "fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price."

Those already playing, don't worry: because development is taking place alongside support, "anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so".

Can't wait to see what happens with a game actually built around the idea, instead of trying to force the concept onto a military sim that couldn't quite handle it.

Hopefully they make the game cheaper than the $30 you need for ArmA 2: Combined Operations, which is required to play the original mod.

Can somebody give me a rundown on why this game is so great? I know very little about it (zombie survival FPS i think?), and being at work i cant really youtube.

Is it just more mindless zombie horde rush like left for dead or dead rising?

Nope, it's a realistic zombie FPS mod. You have to stay fed, hydrated, scrounge from ammo, run and hide for zombie hoards, and out-wit/out-shoot psychotic survivors (other players). You can even hunt animals to replenish your food supply.

From what I've heard, it's unique in that everyone is on their own in this zombie land. So some people band together for protection, some people try to lone wolf it, some people become bandits and kill other people for ammo (leading those people to band up for protection or try to clear safe areas) and so forth. And, of course, while all this is going on... zombies. Add that to a military sim based on realism (no safe respawning with all your gear), and it's supposedly a pretty unique (if buggy and alpha-esque) experience.

The standalone version is rumored to be designed for the new ArmA 3 engine, so a lot of the current bugs and graphical issues being experienced should be gone.

Survival sim with bands of Jesuses roaming the countryside, healing lepers and feeding multitudes with a single loaf of bread and stuff.

Mostly they just make you feel really guilty when you shoot someone.

It's been said, but it's a realistic-ish zombie survival game with an emphasis on survival. Death is permanent; if you get killed you lose everything (but you might be able to find your corpse and reclaim items if someone else doesn't beat you to it). Early on the zombies are the biggest danger; even taking a few hits can cause you to bleed or break a bone, which is pretty much a death sentence. Later on, as you get better equipment and supplies to ward off zombies and starvation/wounds/dehydration/disease, players become a huge problem. As you invest more time in your character and gain better gear, you'll likely become increasingly protective and paranoid. A player with 10 minutes invested in the character doesn't have much to lose. A player with 10 hours? Yikes, you might even lose some vehicles that took an hour of searching to repair!

It becomes an interesting type of prisoner's dilemma. There are other neat factors: there's a day/night cycle, when night is EXTREMELY deadly. You can hardly see anything without flares or flashlights, but they attract the attention of zombies and other players like a "FREE MEAL HERE" sign in bright neon lights. Also, your character is persistent across servers, so if you don't like one server you can jump to another.

Buuuuuuuut there are a lot of bugs and glitches, as said. It's Alpha, after all.

That does sound pretty awesome. I could see how you would become paranoid as **** if you had a lot of time invested in your character.

i was playing on a friends computer and my char eventually died when i had to risk using a flare at night. People were probably in the building watching as i ran down the streets picking up more and more zombies (it looked like 20) as the public chat was filled with variations of "Olympic sprint in town lol"

:<

Oh and a roosterteeth review video to put things into perspective for people. Mind you this is a VERY early version of the game and things have changed and been improved in various ways and made harder, (you start with even more basic stuff from what i last saw, a backpack, a painkiller, one bandage and a flashlight) since then. It does give you a slight feel for things though.

I never actually paid attention to this game. I wasn't a fan of Left 4 Dead/2 or the zombie survival modes in COD, and I thought "Oh, another zombie game".

But I watched that let's play clip thing and thought "Awesome." Too bad now I'm tempted to wait for a full game rather than buy Arma II/DLC and mod it. I told a few friends at work about it who really enjoy Walking Dead and they thought the idea was great. One said he'd be so nervous about dying and losing everything though.
