So, I received a buddy key this weekend for Secret World. I did not expect to like it, but it looks like it may have promise. There is room for improvement in character creation, but I have to say, who doesn't enjoy an MMO where you can shoot zombies with a shotgun? Has anyone else checked it out?

#2 Jul 10 2012 at 3:04 AM Rating: Decent
I got it from mmoga for a 10%discount deal when it released~
I really like this game - the whole modern day genre isn't used to often in mmos, so its something new (and you can connect better to your character than in a fantasy world where you're playing an elf or sth)
besides the quests are so amazing - sometimes I sit there for hours just for one quest, but didn't hate that at all ;)
If I am right informed Funcom want to expand the character creation in the future, so maybe we don't have to wait that long

It is entertaining me thus far.

The modern setting & story certainly set it apart from other MMOs, as does it's level-less...um...leveling system, but when it comes to combat- you've seen it before. What really sets it apart is it's investigation missions- they're very ARG like & quite challenging.

For Example: One of the earliest Investigation Missions you get makes mention of a clock, if you find the right clock & note the time its stuck on, you are then to use that time to find a bible passage that points you, more or less, in the right direction. Another one has you deciphering morse code (I used a skill I learned in Boy Scouts 20+ years ago, huzzah) to figure out the coordinates of your next objective.

The players seem to be MUCH friendlier on the RP "servers", but since they're all on the same mega server under different "dimensions" you can play with your friends wherever. Thats neat.

Graphics are good, but character designs are a bit of a weak link (females have very blocky boobies). I'm having fun- but casually. And unlike the only other MMO I ever played "hardcore" (FFXI), it doesn't take hours & 5 other people to accomplish stuff. I give it a B+, 'cause I killed a mini-Chthulu this morning.

Anyone still playing this? I picked it up a few weeks ago when it was on sale and am still on the fence about it. I like the premise and the mission structure (except for not being allowed to drop missions). I like the idea of the skill wheel but I feel like I'm grinding lowbie missions repeatedly now just to collect enough SP to stay competitive as I move into harder areas. The world, at least on Leviathan, is silent in the regions I've explored -- no general chatter, no groups forming outside of Agrathea (or whatever that hub zone is called), just me in the gloom shootin' zombies with someone occasionally running past. That part might kill it for me; even when I'm soloing and all alone, I like to feel as though the game is populated.

I'm not playing it, though I had been curious about it (still don't have a new rig yet).

I gather that it's dying a quick death. They laid off a good portion of the dev team, including the project lead, so its future looks fairly bleak. They also started drumming up the "free to play" talk very quickly, which says a lot about the sales performance, too. I'm not sure if it'd be enough to save the game.

Shame, too. Seems like it had some interesting stuff going for it.

Well, I'll get my month's entertainment out of it if it comes to that. Interestingly, despite having bought it in early September, I noticed I have access to the pre-order gifts (in-game t-shirt, extra xp ring, cat dressed like Mr. T). Once my month is up, I may just put it on hold and wait to see if it goes F2P rather than paying a monthly sub. If it goes F2P this soon, I'd expect the retail box owners would get some trinkets out it anyway.

The problem with puzzles in mmos is they never change. That particular puzzle will only be fun and challenging the first time through. Also puzzles go up on fan sites in no time and then you don't have to even bother trying to figure them - though it's easy enough to avoid spoilers.

If they keep adding new puzzles it would be cool.....

edit - I just responded to a necro post Smiley: glare. I blame Joph.

Secret World definitely isn't in a great place right now. They had really disappointing opening sales (honestly, they could have done way better with their advertising, and launching so close to GW2 probably wasn't smart).

They are also facing insider trading allegations now, and the Norwegian government is launching an investigation. According to Kotaku, their stock prices hit a high of $17.20 in July. They are down to $.39 a share right now (assuming the conversion calc I was using was correct--2.22 Krone).

Not pretty.

Going F2P generally does help MMOs, but honestly I don't see much of a future for TSW. Not with GW2 being nothing but an up-front purchase cost and TOR going F2P.

I haven't logged in for a couple weeks, been playing Black Mesa & Madden instead. I think my toons name was Marii...

I had just about cleared the 3rd zone but with content updates there's other stuff to do in the earlier zones too.

I suppose it's worth saying that it's "free to play" in a Guild Wars sort of way. You buy the box still but there's no longer a monthly sub. There's a cash shop but, unless they've changed it since the month I played, it's mainly clothing items for playing Barbie.

I asked their game director Joel Bylos a whole bunch of questions about their Buy to Play move. You'll find them here - http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=31337. Let me know if there's anything else you want to know and I'll see if I can wrangle it out of Funcom :)

Not really sure how I feel about this method.

It's fine when the game is released with this feature, like GW2 was, because you're ensured at least some value for your money before it shuts down. With a game on the decline, though, it's a bit trickier. Compared to a subscription fee, it's great value for the money, assuming the game survives for more than two months, but I imagine a lot of potential customers are choosing not to buy it simply because they don't know how long the game is going to continue existing. They could shut down the servers in a week and I'd have paid 30 Euros for a week of playing a semi-dead online game. Why bother when other online games allow me to download the client and play (with restrictions) for free?

I get that the game is going to stay up for more than two months, but the thought is still there, weighing against buying it. If they want more players, then they have to bring more players to the field. Nobody wants to play a dead online game. Making people pay to play a dead online game seems like a bad strategy. They should do the usual F2P model and just put some restrictions in the game. If they want to stick with the "buy to play" model then they could make those restrictions removable with a one-time purchase where you buy the full game.

I want to check it out, but I'm not prepared to fork over 30 Euros for a trial.

Amazon has it on sale for 14.99 USD (50% off).

I'm thinking about picking it up. Even if the game does flop, with it's free to play model now, I'll only be out 15 bucks.

I played during open beta, early access and maybe did 3-month subscription while waiting for GW2. Deciding to take a break from GW2 for a bit, I did the Amazon deal and fortunately, Amazon also had a $15.00 gift card promotion so it didn't really cost me anything to get the game again.

I logged back into the Arcadia (RP) server where I am fairly certain that's where I left my characters only to find that my characters were gone. Not sure if that means deleted or simply moved to another server but I can't find them. I submitted a customer service ticket this morning and have yet to hear back yet but not sweating it since it's Sunday.

So starting back over from scratch, I'm back on Arcadia as Templar novice Hamish "Steampunker" Darkstout. Definitely up for grouping as soloing isn't as much fun in MMOs.

**They say the memory is the first thing to go as we advance in years...turns out I have two accounts - I hadn't logged into the primary one. My characters (all on Arcadia) are:

Snorre "Tankard" Norseman (main character)
Hamish "DarkStout" Belhaven
Dashiell "Dashe" Knightfall

I played in the closed beta and even with the bugs, I enjoyed the game and had every intention of buying it. But I was still unemployed at the time and couldn't justify the 60 bucks. Now that it's going the F2P route, I'm thinking I'm going to get it.

You'll still need to buy the box but it seems to be on sale from various outlets pretty frequently. Still $15 from Amazon as of this posting.

Main toons name is Marii, logged in for the first time since September.

I still haven't left Solomon Island, so I'm low enough "level" & close enough to the starting areas to help out. My most comfortable build is a Shotgun/Assault Rifle solo build, with a minor in hand to hand/pistols. Decent damage, crowd control, health leaching, & main healing.

But more importantly, I bought an automaton pet with free funcom money I got for formerly being a subscriber. Way cooler than the cat that came with the pre-order.
