Agree to disagree, I suppose. I've played dungeon crawlers where that wasn't the case (such as Diablo 1 and 2). Torchlight suffers from an overbearing lack of variety in my opinion.

Diablo 1 wasn't repetitive and the same monsters over and over? Since when? Where do you think Torchlight got the idea. Diablo just recolored monsters as you went down levels. Sure, there were about 5 or so different total levels which added a bit of new monsters... but I think you are letting nostalgia cloud your visions of the game. Even Diablo II suffered from the copy/paste monsters. It's a genre issue more than anything.

The monsters repeated some, sure. But at least where there were different types, I actually had a recent to treat them differently. In Torchlight I didn't care if it was a spider or a skeleton or whatever their equivalent to goblins is, they all went down the exact same way.

The other important thing is that, as I leveled up in Diablo 1/2, I actually got new skills and approached combat in different ways. Like I said, with Torchlight, all I did was autoattack. It didn't matter what level I was. I got probably halfway through the game like that before I gave up hope of it ever becoming interesting.

...Are you serious about this?

In diablo 2 your only skills that mattered were, hammers for an hdin. Tornado for a windy druid, lightning/blizzard for sorcs, ww/frenzy for barbs so on and so forth. And then to really add depth, you got yourself an enigma so your other bound skill was teleport.

Diablo 2 was the exact opposite of what you're claiming.

It looked so good, but the way you interacted with the environment was quite limited. That limitation kind of threw me off the game (I only played the Demo).

Also, the repetitive cutscenes, idiotic AI, and lack of a level creator put me off a bit.

On From Dust:
Quote:
When it comes to the gameplay, for a sandbox style game it feels fairly limiting. While you can pick up stuff from anywhere and put it anywhere, there aren't that many types of things to pick up and move. There is primarily dirt, water, dirt, lava, and dirt. Also dirt. If you hadn't guessed, you mostly just manipulate dirt. The problem with this is that you can't form it in anyway, you can just pile it up. You can't shape it, you can't dig through it. You can only change the relative local elevations. At least for the campaign thus far, water hasn't been very important beyond growing plants for bonus missions. You can pretty much make a puddle with it, and that's all. Lava cools to become rock, so it's just dirt that doesn't wash away with water.
Made me chuckle a little and never want to play the game when I first read this.

I mean, its a fun game. it's just not very substantial, and its got a few hangups.

If it drops to say, $5, that'd be a perfect price point.

In Nightmare and **** modes, sure. For the first playthrough you would actually pick up something new every 6 levels and most of the time it was a welcome change. I think you're speaking from the viewpoint of someone who's used to rushing characters through the start of the game and getting to endgame skills right away.

Like I said, agree to disagree. I don't expect to change anyone's mind, and I know nobody's going to change mine.

If Bastion comes around again on sale and you haven't given it a serious look, I highly recommend it. Wait...did I say highly recommend? I meant HIGHLY recommend.

It's a steal at regular price. Most entertaining game I've played in years. No exceptions.

To be fair to Steam, I only run Steam when I want to play a game. Today when I started it, it had to update itself, then Team Fortress 2, and Borderlands, as well as download 2 games I just purchased. Maybe that was too much for it? Allegory mentioned in the past that it could be a more robust platform for delivery, and I tend to agree.

Steam will probably be acting a little slow or laggy for the next week and change since so many people are purchasing/downloading stuff at the same time.

Agreed, however I don't think this is a network problem so much as a poor platform problem. I've always had issues with Steam and it's stability.

My problem with Steam is that you can't play offline unless you set it to offline mode first. Very annoying if you have an unexpected network outage.

Huh? I had an unexpected outage the other day and was able to play offline just fine, without ever setting it to. When I went to log in it gave me an "offline login" option or something like that. I'm pretty sure that every time you sign in, you're good to go in offline mode for something like two weeks to a month.

I have issues with it on my piece of sh*t laptop, and part of the problem is because I rarely run it to update it. But on my desktop it runs on startup and I've had absolutely -ZERO- problems with it. No crashing, no freezing, etc. I can't remember anything bad happening ever.

Is your computer crappy?

Also, you can tell it not to update programs iirc. Can't remember if you can make that setting a default or if it has to be done per update though.

I think we've found the culprit. I only run Steam when I want to play a Steam game. If it's been a few months, then it needs to update. So, in conclusion Steam is still a crappy platform that can't handle itself when it needs to update.

Different strokes. I avoided Steam for a long while until last March when I got the Orange Box and was forced into using it. But, since then, I haven't have any issues with it (aside from long download times during the big sales but that's understandable).

Overlord is another title worth checking out. The controls are awkward (and having two monitors really screws things up sometimes) but it's a pretty entertaining game. Some highlights to give you an idea:

- I got my minions drunk and they just started to pee all over the place
- Brown minions will wear anything. I've had minions put pumpkins on their head as helmets and right now I've got two minions with hats made out of rat corpses.
- An early quest to raise your corruption level requires that you abduct 10 women from the first town. This is done by instructing your minions to club them until they fall down, after which your minions can pick them up and carry them back to your tower portal. When you go back to your tower, each woman you've abducted has had their clothing replaced by provocative rags. Also, if you hit them in your tower they slap you and knock you on your ***.
- The 'intro' level teaches you how to control your minion horde by having you beat the **** out of your court jester.
- The Overlord II demo (I have the full game now but haven't played it yet) featured clubbing baby seals and chasing after effeminate elf environmentalists.

It's just a ridiculous game and that's what makes it fun.

there's some weird **** that goes on with steam, like games taking longer to start up in offline mode than when it's connected.

Well after I have troll/complained/hated on Steam I finally downloaded it and it isn't nearly as bad as I seem to remember it being. I am not a big fan of digital downloads, however when I can get games for under $5 it is alright. I still don't like the idea of paying $60 for a Digital download when I can go to gamestop and for the same amount get the game on a disc.

Anyways over the past few days have gotten:

Duke Nukem Forever. I loved Duke Nukem 3D. While this game isn't as good as its predecessor It was worth $5.

Half Life 2. Played the crap out of this game on Xbox and loved it. For $2.50 it was worth getting for PC since I no longer have the Xbox version. Usually I prefer console version of games but FPS games do control better on PC.

Limbo. Game has intrigued me for quite awhile so at $2.50 picked it up. Have gotten a good ways into it.

Defense Grid The Awakening. Another $2.50 purchase for a tower defense it is pretty fun.

Chantelise. Game looked interesting. Gotta say this one let me down. Maybe if I had a good gamepad it would be ok but the keyboard controls are horrible. Even with better controls don't know much id really like it.

Plants vs Zombies. Another game I have wanted awhile but been too cheap to buy.

Morrowind. It was on sale for $10 wish I hadn't bought this one. Loved this game on Xbox. Heard about all the mods/etc for this game so thought id pick it up. One of those games that plays better on a console IMO I hate the PC controls. I guess where it was purchased from Steam it makes the mods harder to install also as I can't figure it out. Definately a case of why I don't like Digital Downloads. IF I had bought a hardcopy of it I could give it away or even better sell it. Now Im stuck with it.

Out of all my purchases only unhappy with 2 of them so not bad.
