If that's the quest I'm thinking of, it's the one where you get challenged to a drinking contest by some guy and then you end up in the temple. Nchuand-Zel is Dwemer ruins if it's the place I'm thinking of and is unrelated to the drinking game quest, but if you're not comfortable fighting falmers and chaurus you might want to beat feet and get out of there.
Yeah, it's that place! But I cleared everything else...the Quarters are just impossible.

What level are you at and are you a caster/melee/range? It is pretty easy as range, casters can get eaten up if you are not too careful on the pulls. Haven't been there as a melee but I imagine you just need to do some leveling and come back a bit later and things should crumble at your feet.

Also if you are doing the journal quest there I would book it out of there once you turn everything on. There is a centurion that comes alive and will pretty much one shot you if you are having trouble with the falmer.

I made a thief-ish type of character. The centurion was an very easy kill, it's the packs of 4-5 Falmers that kill me easily. I'm also level 16, gained 3 levels in there, trying to be able to clear stuff up.

Shoot one then back away and around a corner. They will investigate where the shot came from, get bored, then you will fall back into stealth. Rinse and repeat until they are gone.

Kinda funny that you find the centurions very easy. The one I fought in there took over half my health away with his steam attack. I then proceeded to run like a girl.

Just got the Volsung Mask. You mean I get 20% better prices, 20 more carrying points, can breathe underwater, AND it matches my Thief set? Sold.

PS: my thief can carry like, 400 lbs of gear. I have a weird thing for +carrying capacity.

Are you remaining in stealth the entire time? Are you far enough back that you can run (while in stealth) away safely? Is the path you are taking sufficiently dark enough that they won't see you retreat? Also using your knockback and literally running like a madman for quite a distance followed by stealthing and walking back a bit more tends to make them give up the chase.

As an in game explanation, the Falmer are blind. Does lighting really have an effect on them, or is this a gameplay/story segregation thing?

Dare I say it? I hate the city or Markath. It's impossible to navigate and the story is...one sided? Didn't like it!

I haven't spent a ton of time in Markath or the other 'M' city nearby. I did the first part of the Haunted House quest which I thought was kind of neat but the whole series and related aspects all seemed to branch one way or the other on the evil side which wasn't really what I wanted to be doing at the time so I just set it aside.

I like the whole concept of the Dwemer ruins and find that they have more 'atmosphere' than any of the other places I've visited. It's a surprisingly successful merger of higher technology with an otherwise low-tech game world that just seems to work. Of course, my first adventures into Dwemer ruins came after I could already one-shot Master Centurions, so that may have shaped my perception in certain ways <.<

Good question. I have always been detected while in light much quicker than when I was in the dark around them. That might be of course due to me being a bit more clumsy in the light. I will have to do some research on that to check it out.

Edit: Ah after a bit of research I found this.

I hate the guards in this game.

It all started when some guard came running up to me, claiming to know me. I was wondering if I should ignore him or stab him in the chest. In the end, he said I had to bribe him for something I may or may not have done, or go to jail. So I did what any self-respecting Nord would do: I cut off his head and tossed it at his colleagues.

They did not approve.

Seriously, though, you're the most badass person in all of Tamriel and people are treating you like you're some rookie with a wooden sword. I walk into town in my Daedric armor, with all sorts of magic vibrating the air around me and guards just walk up to me and say "Sup, you're the new kid, right? Do you, like, fetch mead or something? Har har, move along, punk!"

So I turn them into ice sculptures and people get mad at me. What did they expect? I've single-handedly destroyed the Dark Brotherhood, killed the God of Destruction and conquered any foe in my way. Did they think I'd just ignore it when someone insults me like that?

What I'm saying is, I think Bethesda should have done more to enable some kind of progression in the NPC AI with regards to your standing. Perhaps the guards could be frightened/happy depending on your "karma", or at least respectful when talking to someone who is not only their Thane, but also a powerful warrior and/or magician.

That's why I just punch the guard who was an **** to me then when they get angry at me for doing that I remind them that I am their thane and they should **** off. Also shouting around town and telling the guards to buggar off every time they tell me to stop doesn't help our relationship.

Now that I think about it my general response to things that annoy me is to punch it in the face. I must have a bit of Theldurin the Lost in me. Smiley: laugh

I have gotten a bunch of comments on my dragonbone armor from guards. Kinda silly, as daedric is more powerful. I think I also got some comments after reaching 100 enchanting.
