Skyrim, or, How I Ruined My LifeFollow

I had sort of a crazy morning this morning clearing out miscellaneous quests in my journal. Weirdest thing was going back to Windhelm for something and going into the jarl's hall where everyone was sitting down to a meal only to notice that Ulfric's corpse was still crumpled over at a grotesque angle at the corner of the table. I think I might have to go drag him into a room somewhere and put a pot over his head or something. Courtesy, as it were.

It just strikes me as pretty astounding when you can do a "side quest" that involves a 60+ minute jaunt through multiple layers of ruins without oodles of copy-pasta maps and other such shortcuts on the part of the developer.

You can always use enchanting in a less OP way. Instead of making your major spells schools free, settle with making 4 schools 50% (or something) with increased mana regen, for example.
But that's really not much different than what I can put together with enchanted items I find from exploring.

It gives you significantly more options and will ultimately be quite a bit more powerful. Nearly doubling the enchant power of most item slots is nothing to scoff at.

That's not to say that it's always superior, of course.

For instance, unless you are a super specialized mage, the Archmage Robes are going to be better for you. If you are super specialized, enchanting/the master robes will be better.

But you wont' find better rings/head items (assuming you want to use Mage Armor)/boots/gloves/amulets than what you can make for yourself. ESPECIALLY when a single amulet could give you -25% costs to two spell schools. Or maybe fully powered magicka regen and cost reduction enchants, to mimic the combined enchant (but twice as powerful).

You aren't going to get anywhere NEAR that with a normal set. You might not put personally enchanted items in every slot, but you'll definitely find them very, very powerful overall.

I might as well note that I haven't seen any truly noteworthy amulets/rings for mages.

So I just encountered one of those situations where a bunch of different elements come together that leave you wondering if you should laugh or just shake your head...

I was bombing around doing some questing for the Bard's guild in the northern areas near the mage college when I see the dragon shadow pass along the ground right over me. I look up and there he is...frost dragon. Feeling slightly resentful of all the dragons that like to toy with me as they fly around refusing to attack because I'm always in sneak mode, I looked around to see if there were any baddies nearby that might prompt the dragon to land. Sure enough, not too far ahead is a frost troll and...what's this? Some nord guy is right next to the frost troll running at me with weapon drawn. Thinking he's probably not friendly, I draw my bow thinking I'll let him get close and if he's hostile I'll spike him...

As he gets to melee range, a dialogue menu pops up and I see "Elven Mace of the Blaze added" on the top left of my screen. Only problem was, when the sneaky would-be robber opened the dialogue it "canceled" my right click and thunk...he eats an arrow to the face and goes down. Oops.

Then the dragon lands a short distance in front of me looking to make a tasty snack of the frost troll, so I load up another arrow and splat...crit on the dragon from sneak and the dragon crumples like a wet rag. I can't see the troll so I run up to the dragon and go to peek around it looking for the troll when some elf guy runs up to me and he's all, "Hey, did you see a robber?"

Unbeknownst to him, the troll was now less concerned about the dragon so it runs around from behind the dragon corpse and starts smashing the snot out of the elf guy who, because he's locked in a dialogue with me, is unable to respond. So this elf is getting ripped a new ******** while we're chatting pleasantly about the spiffy mace in my bag that may or may not be his. He thanks me and hands me a pile of gold a split second before the troll disembowels him from behind while I'm absorbing a dragon soul. Now the troll turns on me, but seriously...I just one-shot a dragon...what is the troll thinking?

So now there's a dead troll in front of me with a dead elf leaning up against the skeleton of the dragon I just killed whose corpse just happens to have the mace I just gave back to him.

The moral of the story? Enchanting is OP >:D

There are a lot of little details in the game like that kind of elevate it from ho-hum sandbox with story arcs to something much more. I'm still finding little details that make me sit up and take notice and it's funny how different elements can come together in unexpected ways. I learned today that you can use items to weigh down pressure plates in dungeons. I found out while creeping through a dungeon full of draugr-type mobs. There were two standing right next to each other in a narrow hallway. I shot one and a second or so later, a rock on a pole swings down from the ceiling and clobbers the other one. I thought maybe it had stepped on the plate until I got closer and realized that when I shot the first one, it dropped its sword which fell on the pressure plate and sprung the trap. As soon as I picked up the sword, the pressure plate came back up.

And a little earlier I was poking around in some Dwaemer ruins and came across some statues that looked like Dwaemer mobs, only I didn't know they were statues so I was shooting them to see if they died and when my arrows hit them, they made red sparks instead of the normal puff of dust you get when you shoot objects.

Hell, I stopped off at my house in Whiterun to unload my inventory and Lydia coughed. That's it...no dialogue. She just coughed like she was getting over a cold.

This has nothing to do with Skyrim, but it's awesome. I'm also lazy and thus would like to remind everyone that we can embed youtube videos now.

Imma just gonna jump in here and say that, although I haven't played ES since Morrowind, this has been a massively entertaining, informative and funny thread.

My current system would likely not handle V, so I can't play yet.

I don't care...keep this stuff coming!! Smiley: lolSmiley: laugh

I haven't read the 20 pages of this thread because, well, I don't have Skyrim.

That said, I'm still playing Oblivion after having gotten it a month or so ago from some Steam sale. Its biggest weakness to me is that it plateaus very early in terms of character power. With even casual playing and no attempts to exploit the system, I quickly reached level 20+ and settled into a grind of fighting ogres, minotaurs and daedra and just dumping piles of loot. I have over 200k gold with nothing to spend it on and getting new equipment is a snooze because nothing is notably more powerful than what I have. And this didn't happen last night; it's been this way for the past week or more. I can crank up the difficulty to make combat harder but there's no reward for doing so because I'm still not going to progress as a character, I'll just spend more time in combat and spamming my repair hammer afterward. I'm kind of just grinding through the main quest now just to finish the game. Sidequesting afterward doesn't seem appealing since, again, there's nothing really new around the next corner. Another bandit in glass armor telling me that this is the part where I bleed to death while they whiff their glass mace around.

Does Skyrim do anything about this or is it the same thing with prettier graphics?

I did The Butcher questline a while ago, and decided to take the dead body that never despawns, and set her up to look like a town drunk in the cemetery. She's been stripped clean, and been laying on a coffin for what feels like ever. Every once in a while I'll have to run by when a guard is as well, and I overhear them talk about how horrible her murder is, but the script for it could easily be taken the wrong way. Anyway, today I'm running from my house to the smithing area and I see this. I stood around a little bit to see what NPC reaction to it is, and they completely ignore it but act completely aghast to the dead drunk.

I play on the PS3, with a 9MB save file, and don't have any real issues. My brother's file is 13MB, and he experiences slight lag at times when dropping off large amounts of items into his house storage. I've watched him play and it doesn't lag that bad though.

He said there was one time when he went into a place where some Nords, Falmar, and a Dragon were fighting, and it lagged so much that he couldn't do anything but wait for everyone to kill off each other.

But he's pretty far, completed DB quests, etc. From what I've seen of his lag issues, they are not bad.

It can be similar. If you powerlevel a skill to 100, you'll hit level 18 pretty quick; around every 10 levels enemies get stronger gear (or so it seems). So by the time you hit 40, they'll have glass; and levels 1-10 happen really quick, but then it starts to slow down (again, unless you're powerleveling skills to 100). Still, assuming you do things like pickpocketing, lockpicking, and sneaking, it's quite possible to hit over level 20 long before even reaching the first big city, which spoils the game to some extent in my view. Some enemies, like dragons, also come in stronger varieties and seem based on your level. I think around level 20 I started fighting frost dragons; blood dragons at 30; and elder dragons at 40.

If you level smithing up, your weapons and armor will almost always be more powerful than what you'll find through quests or off enemies. If you level enchanting, it'll be better enchanted too. I've done both, and it makes the game incredibly easy, like what you're saying. If you level neither of them (or not very far), questing remains a great way to get some good gear and the difficulty remains pretty good (although potion spamming will let you live through almost anything).

Even in Oblivion though, some questlines are worth it for the unique awards. Unbreakable lockpick, Shadowmere (the fastest horse), Azura's Star (reusable soul gem); all of those are unique and pretty useful. Skyrim has those too.

I like Skyrim's story, world, and quests better than Oblivion, though. Oblivion, I played through the main quest, a couple of sidequests, the expansion, and that was it. I probably still have a good 40-50% of the content left to do, but I just ran out of steam. Hasn't happened with Skyrim yet.

I ran into my first Blood Dragon at level 20-ish. I'm fighting Frost Dragons at level 18 right now.

Adept difficulty setting, by the way, if that matters.

Yeah, they might come earlier than that. I remember hitting 40 and almost only encountering elder dragons after that in random fights. Those guys still hurt, even with magic resistance and the elemental shield perk. Luckily, smithing and enchanting made it so 2-3 power attacks kill them Smiley: nod

I feel about the same as what's written here, but also want to add that the leveling system, which is what finally killed Oblivion for me, is so much better in Skyrim. I'd say I'm about halfway through the game's quests(based on number of cities I've visited and can find no more quests in), and everything is still fun.

Except that one boss with the Fus Ro Dah and the multiple copies on the platforms, that wasn't quite so much fun as it was an exercise in frustration. Beyond that, it's been nothing but fun.
