there are several servers on eqoa but for the past few years, the castle lightwolf server was and still is the only active server. as for what class, depends on what kind of class you like. there are 4 types of classes and they are tanks (warrior, shadowknight, and paladin), healers (shaman, druid, and cleric), casters (alchemist, enchanter, magician, necromancer, and wizard), and melee also known as damage dealers or dds (bard, monk, ranger, and rouge). go to http://everquestonlineadventures.station.sony.com/ to help you understand eqoa a bit more

Hmm this turned out quite a bit longer than I had thought to write, hopefully I didn't ramble and you can get some helpful information out of all this though...

Unless you start as a eastern human you are not likely to see anyone in your starting city even on CLW. The starting cities were abandoned long ago as places where people gather to go XP and instead people all made their way to freeport(eastern human starting city) to do so. Now though the population is even more decayed and no one XPs at low levels anymore and instead make their way to a castle named Highpass to farm a hunt and gather quest to level up. You will want to start on CLW though no question.

There is no way to see all people on the server, in start -> community -> and then like the top entry which I can't for the life of me remember what it's called it will show you all players within a certain range of you. If you saw anyone on the proudpines outpost server I would be surprised and you are not likely to see that again that is probably the least populated of all the dead servers and anyone on would not be leveling toons up normally.

Either way you will want to go to Freeport and there ask in shout chat if anyone can give you a port to highpass. As long as you are not playing as western human or dark elf there will be a gnome NPC usually near the coachman named ____ Porter that will give you a port to FP as long as you are under level 15.

The first thing you should do regardless of where you start is to get a "Boon of Hagley". This is a 4x xp boost that can be purchased in every starting town(also usually near the coach) for 1000 tunar in a "signpost" named ____ Announcements. You will likely want to ask someone if they could give you 1k for the boon as gathering that much at level 1 would take forever, if you get to FP just ask there there should be someone willing to help.

With this boon you can get to level 16 just by turning in your starting city quests and 17 or 18 if you also killed stuff along the way. For soloing quests it will let you quickly reach a level higher than your current quest and breeze through them if it is too tough. The lvl 1-4 quests are simple running errands and killing wildlife but the level 5 one is much harder, it pits you up against a mob that is "red" to you(at least three levels higher) and encourages you to team up with others to complete...which is not possible anymore so you would want to solo xp up to at least level 7 before trying it by your self. After that some quests are soloable and some not at their designated levels it varies for each race/class.

After you complete your starting quests standard practice is to head to highpass to do pickclaws. This is a simple hunt and gather quest with mobs right outside of the castle(out the door opposite the coachman and down the road past the gate, the lowest level camps are up on the ridges next to the road). At level 17 they will be green to you(much lower level) and can be killed in only a few hits and people just farm them until they get full stacks of their drops to turn in.

Doing that will get you to levels 20-23 quickly and you can do your 20 quest which is your first "path" quest, this is usually a longer involved quest that at the end you will be given a choice of which path you want to take in the form of two abilities and specific weapons. They vary for each class but are usually stark opposites of each other and the choice should not be taken lightly and you may want to ask others before selecting. You get another path quest every 10 levels and another choice of upgraded versions of those abilities and if you chose the same one every time than your level 49 and 60 ones will be stronger than if you did not.

After that you can start looking for a group which will be slow as groups below level 30 are very rare. Some people do other hunt and gather quests but they must be farmed on a higher level toon. You can continue killing those low level pickclaws but it becomes impractical before long. There are higher level pickclaws that roam up and down the road from highpass that you can kill to turn in but their spawns are often slow and you have to be very careful not to pull multiple mobs.

From level 30-46 the popular way to level up is the Dawn Maiden quest(this requires the frontiers expansion which you will need to have anyways if you are at all serious about playing this game). This is a small repeatable quest that is usually run with the help of a higher level toon and is not soloable except by some classes at the high end of the level range. You can more than likely find a group who will let you tag along with them though you must listen and do exactly as they say or you're likely to get yourself killed. Many people do this all the way to 46 and then they can group with level 60s. Many groups of 60 "petter" classes(mage and necro, technically enchanter to but not common here) just sit back usually afk and have one member of the group pulls a mob over and over for their pets to kill and often have lower leveled toons do that.

As for classes it all depends on what kind of player you are. For a brand new player some classes are much better suited than others. A beginner should typically not start with a tank class, rogue, wizard, or alchemist. Cleric would also be difficult though you could solo anything just incredibly slowly, shaman would be the same way at the low levels and druids can be fun as they can do a moderate amount of damage along with all the benefits of a healer. Any of the three petter classes will be good for a beginner as your pet will take care of most of the work while you are learning. A bard will also be good for learning the game as they get a small self and group heal spell and defensive buffs that let them survive many situations, as well as a speed boost spell for travel.

This website has walkthrough for about every qyest in the game as well as links to other information and is a must have reference for anyone playing the game still. Though for some quests you may want to look in the quest section on this site here if you need clarification as people in the comments are often more detailed.

About towrads the end. do i have to buy frontiers? or can i get to 60 without it?

No, the level cap without the expansion pack is 50.

But there is much more to it then that, it improves everything from the skill bar to adding a whole new continent and the Class Mastery system which expands widely on the character building aspect and will leave you severely disadvantaged without. You will also run into the annoying bug odf your game freezing whenever someone casts a were form(lycanthorpy buff forms) near you which require the frontiers disc.

correct. you NEED the eqoa frontiers expansion because of the stuff the other guy said and because alot of people won't group with you if you don't have frontiers. also, be very careful with the wizard class, i've never played a wizard (i don't like playing as wizards, i prefer warriors, shadowknights, and shamans) but i've heard alot of people say that wizards have the stongest damage spells out of all the casters and wizards die the most because of their strong spells taking aggro from the tank
