Bioshock: InfiniteFollow

Wow.

I'm quite psyched. As an architect, the original Bioshock has a special place in my heart. It had one of the most cohesive and ambitious aesthetics I've ever seen in a game. The developers wove Art Deco aesthetics, 1920-30's sensibilities, American utopian theory, and objectivism (Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead is pretty common architecture reading) together seamlessly.

I've no interest in Bioshock 2, which has the markings of a cash-in sequel to me.

But Infinite...man, this is how you do a sequel. The same foundation, but built up into an entirely different atmosphere. This game's aesthetics are amazing. Every scene seems like a set piece. Nothing seems out of place. As far as the story goes: it looks like an adrenaline shot. The emotion, the tension, everything is there. Just watching the trailer, I found myself trying to will the main character to save the heroine. Very well done.

The shooting...not as much. Bioshock never had the most crisp shooting mechanics, and this looks to be shaping up about the same. I feel like if they could tighten up the shooting, then this would be game of the decade material.

This is going to be a great few years for gaming, and an awful time for my wallet.

Like everyone else that watched that clip, I too was born on January 1st.

Also, game looks amazing- just wish any of my runs through an FPS looked that smooth.

If the Census used data culled from from video maturity checks for age, it would find that 95% of the population was born January 1st, sometime between 1940-1970

That was some impressive visual candy right there. Smiley: eek I am a bit confused though, can you only carry two weapons in Infinite or does the demo video just sticking with two for no reason? Also is that bird-man-thing the new big daddies? If so that would be rather interesting to fight them, what with their ability to fly and you having the option to use rails to get to various platforms around the level. Smiley: drool2

I'm not sure about the weapon situation, either. I suspect that a lot of those details are still in the planning stages...the demo has a very scripted feel to it that gives the impression that they're not ready to take the training wheels off just yet.

As far as the bird goes: It's obviously inspired by the Big Daddies, and it'll definitely have that boss-battle feel to it, but there's only one. It's called the Songbird, and it seems to have a vested interest in recapturing the woman that you're trying to save. Seems like it'll make an appearance from time to time to throw a wrench into your plans and incite panic, a la Nemesis from Resident Evil.

Ah Songbird eh? I suppose that it will be nice to have only one of them pestering you. I know with the Big Daddies I ended up skipping the latter ones due to the utter lack of interest to deal with them.

Or you could spend a comparatively smaller amount on a PS3 or 360 and and have a bunch more money left over to buy a lot more games.

Yeah, but it almost seems worth it to just get a computer that can run current games, and wait for Steam sales to get your games. Smiley: lol

Supposedly the PS3 was getting steam (supposed to come out with Portal 2). Don't know what happened to those plans, though.

They weren't getting Steam, but compatibility with it so you can play against we, the PC Master Race, through Steam.

I consider cross-console server compatibility to be pretty damn strong, actually. It's not like Sony was actually going to let Valve set up an alternative to the PlayStation Store.

Oh no, that's great. I meant weak that the store isn't coming to the PSN. I had figured it was possible for them to come to some sort of joint venture. The PSN is about to undergo an overhaul; I thought it might have been part of it.

I don't think it's exactly a crazy idea. Finances could be worked out, and it'd be a nice selling point over the 360.

This late in the lifecycle, I'm not sure Sony would take it as a selling point, when compared to the revenue they'd miss out on compared to just convincing developers to sell through their own Store. Especially when you think that, if games are available on both PC and PS3, developers aren't likely to want to sell you a copy for both platforms for one price, yet Valve would almost certainly insist on it. I can't imagine the increase in sales that a Steam store would bring could offset those disadvantages.
