or you can just play offline if you really want to keep invaders out. If you're not into that whole invading thing, there's really no downside to playing offline.

Just the soul form thing. It was also handy because dying in soul form doesn't make the world go blacker, as I recall, which was especially useful if you were trying to get something from a white world tendency event.
