If you like the game, great, but let's not pretend that it's eerily similar to WoW. If someone has played WoW and is looking for something different, Rift just isn't it. The controls are the same, the UI is the same, the basic gameplay is almost identical, many of the abilities have the same effect but different names, same with the stats, and the crafts. The only real differences between them are the character customization, the graphics, and the Rifts themselves.

Psh, so like Rift has this spell that, when you use it, it HEALS people. That's SUCH a WoW ripoff!

The Rifts are nice little gimmick, but will get old very quickly. Do you really want to keep fighting off the same silly sky based tentacle monster spawner a year from now? The graphics are nice enough, but don't compare to non-MMOPRGs, and the character customization is so complicated that there were character builder tools before the game was even released, which depending on your outlook could be either a plus or a minus.

The point is that the things about the game that are unique are wildly outweighed by the things that are the same as WoW and every other game out there trying to be the next WoW.

Locke responded well, so let me just add this. Some aspects of the game are similar to WoW (especially if you specify Vanilla WoW), but most of these similarities are superficial and anyone who actually plays the game knows that the differences are what makes the game great. The similarities are simply those which have been proven in WoW and other MMOs to be successful. You want to call Rift a WoW clone? That's fine, but don't dismiss it because of that. If someone wants something different from WoW, there is still a good chance they'll like Rift. Rift was never advertised to be something innovative. Instead, they took basic formulas from different MMOs and brought them together into a solid product.

I tried rift and just didn't get into it. I personally didn't like the talent trees I found it to be too confusing to pick "just the right" combo. Also got sick of having to wait for quest npcs to respawn because at any point in time there was a rift within rocks throw spawning bad guys. Alot of my play time is late night (EST) and sure enough, as I suspected, rifts were opening and not enough people were there to help close them.

On top of KTurner's point, it seems that you really missed the point of the game. Rifts aren't supposed to be a gimmick that you avoid, they're the whole point. Questing is supposed to fill the time in between rifts--not the other way around.

This.

I'm all about questing. But since I started playing Rift, quests are just a boring way to fill in the gaps between rifts and invasions (omg, loves me some invasions!) Maybe you should give it another go. Also, why worry so much about finding the "right" way to use your soul points? Just do what you think will help your game play. That's what I do. If you mess up, reset them.

Minor correction: Trion designed the game such that you can avoid Rifts altogether if you want, or avoid questing altogether if you want, or do both, or do neither and pvp the entire time, etc. Saying that questing is supposed to fill the time inbetween rifts is only true if that's the way you want to play. If you prefer questing and want to close rifts on the side (like me), then that's perfectly acceptable.

Yeah, but you're weird. Smiley: clown

I didn't expect this to turn into a Rift is sh*tty/awesome thread, but since it did, I'll give it another go. I only got to mid 30s the first time around. Maybe it'll get better. I can say for sure that it's a great canvas and if updated to dx11 and given an expansion in the next year, it could be an incredible game. A small part of me is still hoping FFXIV will be good someday, but until then I suppose it wouldn't hurt to give Rift one more shot. If anything I'll get to 50 and go gank people until I get bored :P Thanks for the suggestion, however round about it was.

Honestly, it just sounds like you're burned out on games in general. Even then, you ranked Rift higher than the other two choices in your OP. :)

Yeah a bit burned and still wincing from XIV's failed launch. I was bankin on that one to take me away from WoW for a couple years, so when it didn't I was left with a bad taste in my mouth I guess. Just logged back in to Rift and got out of Scarwood. I'm in some lush green place that kinda resembles Mulgore, so that's a plus so far :)
