After 2 weeks working on the ARG, players finally arrived at that countdown time.

Anyone else notice that the letters e and f are missing from the URL?

If you were waiting for Portal 2 to be released, yes. The wiki link that Zenoxio posted will explain everything.

I preloaded two nights ago! Yay me :)

Only thing preventing me from playing when I get off work is this local mvc3 tournament I might hit.

Well that was pointless. The timer was for another timer to the Portal 2 official release day, and a message that if you play the Potato Sack indie games you can get it released earlier.

I enjoyed the hell out of Portal, and from everything I've read Portal 2 is going to be more of that, which is a good thing. But damn do I love me some Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Any game with Deadpool is automatically amazing, as far as I'm concerned.

Didn't like Taskmaster, though. Another character I absolutely love in the comics (more so than Deadpool, believe it or not), but considering his powerset, his move list in the game is waaaaaaaaaaaay too limited.

Tasky is a solid character gameplay-wise imoo. It's not easy to translate everything into a balanced fighting game from the comics.

I'm curious to see how they handle nightcrawler. From what wesker does I can only imagine how much more teleporting a character can do.

IF DEADPOOL WERE IN PORTAL 2, IT WOULD BE THE ULTIMATE GAME OF THE MILLENNIUM.

Fixed the quote for you.
Quote:
Seriously Valve, you're making me consider, appreciate and support Indie Developers and their wide variety of fun, new and innovative game just to release a sequel to an amazing game earlier than its intended release.

How could you do such a thing, how could you make us play and/or buy great games that we would have never considered before because it was not a big title or backed by a big publishing company.

And what if I don't buy or play any of their games? What are you going to do? What's that? RELEASE THE GAME IN A FEW DAYS ANYWAYS WITH 0 REPERCUSSIONS? Heavens, you must be the devil!

All this effort, fun and role-playing you were doing with Glados? I've come to disregard it all as the final objective is one that has me do more than use my mind and search for clues like Scooby and the Gang.

Disappointed? Extremely. A valiant and noble move from Valve? I scoff a the idea, but I suppose it is a point to be considered now...

The whole potato sack thing comes back to the stark fact that the zero sum situation comes up every single time in games. Valve is just proving it even comes up in the process of releasing games.

The game's release date isn't (1 week from now - this little game's contribution), it's in reality (RIGHT NOW + my personal indignation for Valve's evil decision to force people to play some other unrelated games).

Games are balanced by the eventuality of everyone having the top gear/stats. The fact that you, newbie max level whatever guy, are not on equal standing to 3 year veteran max level whatever guy is not actually a point in balancing.

Now we have game release dates balanced against it too. It's highly amusing.

Valve managed to release it, what, twenty minutes early? This is the most disappointing ARG I've ever seen.

The official release date is April 21st. So, 20 minutes early (and 2 hours) is a wee bit off given it hit at ~midnight (-5 GMT) on April 19th.

Console users seem to be beholden to the original release date still according to some news sources.

What country do you live in? For the U.S. the original release date was always April 19th.

Offering early release of a game if x number of people buy an assortment of other games? That's some damned shrewd business. I suppose there's nothing inherently wrong about it, but man, I'm sure getting tired of all of these conditional releases.

What ever happened to full-package games just being released on their release date, without a bevvy of conditions?

Now I sound like a grumpy old guy.

Err, yeah, I kind of read that when it was quoted already in the thread. I don't think that there's anything wrong with Valve's thing, and said as much.

I had a whole response written out elaborating on the rest of what I said, but then I realized that all that would do was make it seem like a bigger deal than I mean it to be. Sufficed to say, I was just making an off-hand comment about my feelings on conditional releases (which run the full gamut from release-day DLC to Valve's thing). Valve didn't do anything wrong; I'm not slighting them.

If you happen to be curious: yes, I do think that on the industry scale this whole thing is getting a bit gimmicky. I don't think it's good for the long-term of the industry that producers and developers are relying on tie-ins, withholding content, and extraneous fluff to sell their games. I've got a few reasons for thinking that, but I don't particularly feel like going into the whole thing. My real issues with it stem from concern for the industry, not for how it affects me as an individual.

That's great and all, but it isn't Valve's job to force me to consider indie devs. They do that already by putting their games on sale and showcasing them on the store page. I like the idea of doing an ARG for their big releases, but they should at least do an effectual one, not a "hey, buy these games we like!" sort of deal.

The entire point is that they weren't forcing you to do anything. They never promised a release date and then said "oh, you only get it that early if you buy/play these games". Instead, they offered an incentive to try these games that you otherwise might not consider. To me at least, there was 0 "forcing" or pressure to purchase these games (I already owned a couple anyway), and I while I agree at first on Friday when they announced it I was like "wtf Valve", it didn't take me long to realize that it actually was a fairly fun idea with no consequences for not participating. I just don't get why people are complaining about potentially getting the game early when they didn't have to do anything (or, if wanting to participate, anything besides PLAY GAMES THAT ARE FUN).

I want episode 3.. or heck how about a Half Life 3? Portal was fun for about 5 minutes for me, I get the feeling Portal 2 would be no different.

From what I gather basically they are trying to force people to buy indie games to speed up the release date of a game. That is just dirty. I am sure there cause is good, but if the game is done and people have given you preorder money just release the damn thing.
