I don't think that's fair.

She acts a lot like a big sister towards Carver. She and Bethany are friendly. She and Fenris get along pretty well--she structures patrols so as to avoid his mansion and Donnic/Fenris have apparently become close. I don't think she quite understands Merrill, and she's definitely not a fan of the blood magic thing, but I also think she genuinely wants to protect her.

Varric and her are kinda opposites when it comes to personalities, but she doesn't seem to have any real animosity towards him. She appreciates the difficult choice Sebastian needs to make, and respects the fact that he's wary of taking a course that would ultimately hurt his people.

I actually think she genuinely likes Isabela, and that the mutual insults are just their way of doing things (and Isabela likes her more and more as Aveline gets better at them). At the very least, she doesn't hate her. Part of this is that, even though she disapproves of the way Isabela acts, she respects the fact that she does so without shame. She could do without all the questions about her sex life, of course. Plus, she doesn't avoid Isabela's company. When she hosts a dinner party and invites her, Aveline gets irritated when she doesn't come. If she was just inviting Isabela to keep the peace in the group, she wouldn't have been irritated she didn't show.

Anders... I just don't know. I think she wanted to like him, but his constant whining, endeavor to break the order of the city, and personal attacks towards her as guard captain kinda make that hard. And every conversation gets turned into a fight by him--like when she gives him a compliment and he twists it to sound like prejudice against Mages. Plus, he has no boundaries--basically insulting her relationship with Wesley right to her face in Act I.

Though, if anything, I'd say that she likes him (though is clearly worried about his path), but that he doesn't share those feelings. Dunno about how things end up in Act III. They only have 2 dialogues. One of them is him being a prick for no reason, the other isn't really that telling about their relationship.

She's a largely "fair" character. She doesn't let single dislikes color her whole image of a person, which is why she can manage to like nearly everyone, I think. She's just as likely to announce her disapproval to her friends as she is to her rivals, which makes it seem like she doesn't like people. But she's also predisposed to find the good in people. So the real factor, imo, is how well the other person can take criticism. Some take it extremely well, a la Isabela. Others abhor it, like Anders.

I really didn't think I'd like her at first (and even tried to use Fenris to tank instead, to avoid her). But I have to say, I think she's in my top three favorite characters (Varric, her, Merril).

[EDIT]

And yes, I was bored, thank you for asking.

I feel pretty much the same way about that whiny little mage with the persecution complex.

And he was pretty much my favorite character in the original game's expansion.

Omg, his conversation with the mabari in DA2 is wonderful. I want that Anders back. D:

In the words of Varric, "Go away Justice, can't Anders come out to play?"

I wonder if mabari live long enough for Interceptor to meet Barkspawn in Dragon Age III.

I felt that Barkspawn would be exactly the kind of name my sarcastic warrior Hawke would give his dog, so I gave in to the temptation.

It was either that or Princess Puffypants.

I wish Anders still had his cat.

Because then I'd name the dog Ser Bark-a-lot, and we'd be one big happy family when the emo Mage moved in. :3

Me, too. But mostly just because it came in damn handy when everyone but one party member was dead.

There's only one name for a canine companion in a game like this... Dogmeat. Oh yes.

Also, finally managed to pull myself through Act 1 again and romanced Isabela. Wooh! I really love how, underneath the whole independent and frisky facade, she's got a heart of gold. I'm running with Aveline, Merrill and Isabela in my group and the banter is awesome. Between Isabela's dirty innuendos, Kitten's misinterpretations of them and Aveline calling Isabela a ***** every other sentence, I'm laughing so hard sometimes.

Wish I could add a fourth character. It's sad that I have to leave Varric out of the playthrough. I feel like they designed the game around having him in the party. His storytelling and ability to manipulate outcomes of confrontations, etc.

Still, Merrill is adorably naive and Isabela is just smoking. Aveline is primarily there to tank, but I hear the Isa/Ave banter gets good in Act 2. Poor Donnic. Smiley: sly

I can't decide what my party will be for this play through. I'm playing a Mage, and romancing Isabela. And I like Aveline, so she's in. But that last spot is giving me pause. I'm on the PS3, so I can't mod Merril to heal.

So it's either bringing Anders along or having Hawke heal. And I just don't know.

I may actually bring Fenris. I hear his dialogues with Isabela are enjoyable. And I never had him in a party with Aveline before.

[EDIT]

In other news, I think I'm in an awkward spot.

I really want to rivalry romance Isabela, but I'm into the friendship zone right now (at the start of Act II). And this totally wasn't a problem I expected to have, because I was playing a "good" (albeit not necessarily pious) character. I figured I'd definitely end up with rivalry.

But nope. Looking at her wiki section shows that there are WAY more opportunities to get friendship with her than rivalry in Act I (nearly double). And, while many of those aren't something you'd receive if you are playing a purely good character, pretty much all her rivalry would require you to either be a hyper-zealot (for instance, turning Keran into the templars and saying he shouldn't be allowed to stay).

Unless you act like a downright ***, she generally doesn't gain rivalry.

So now I can't decide what to do. Should I just go forward with the friendship one? But that sounds less fun. Or do I just re-do Act I (which actually wouldn't be so bad, because I'm pretty sure I missed a material for the supplier achievement).

Decisions, decisions. I'm leaning towards just redoing it. Though I will try and see if there's any way to fix my current situation first, but I'm doubting there is. I'll need a lot of rivalry fast...

Wait, rivalry romance? How does that one work?

I need to get me some of that...

You can rivalry romance all of the characters. It works the same as a friendship romance, except that you spend more time arguing. :P But I bet the sex is way better.

Most importantly, the endings might change.

With Isabela, for example, a friendship romance will involve her offering you a place on her ship. The rivalry romance will end with her offering to try and change for you, after admitting she regrets keeping the ship.

Sebastian will either ask you to join the chantry so that you can both have a chaste marriage, leaving his country to the usurpers. If you rivalry romance him, he will vow to retake Starkhaven, and if you become vicountess he says that the alliance between the two cities will become a power like the Freemarches have never seen.

So, the patch is out on the PS3, but there have been significant connection issues for the last 3 days or so. Apparently, they're undergoing maintenance, and it is affecting many users, me included.

And because you can't download game patches on the pc, I can't patch DA2. :(

Finished the game a couple of days ago.

Surprisingly fast game once you get past Act 1. I did every quest in every Act and ended up finishing the game in about 25 hours after my last post.

Protip: Don't do too long gaming sessions of "social" games like this where a lot of talking takes place. I did it back with Mass Effect as well and like then, I got the bleed-over effect.

Immediately after finishing the game, I went out to get some dinner. On my way out, I ran into this cute girl that lives on my floor and for a good 10 seconds after I said hi, I just stood there, staring at her, until I realized - to my horror - that I was waiting for the @#%^ing cutscene to play out so I could pick my reply. I mumbled something and left the scene of the nerd crime.

I don't know what was worse, the fact that I expected the response menu to appear or that I was hoping a romance option would be available.

Damn video games.

I can't find a copy of it online yet but there's an interview with bioware in this issue of game informer. Skimmed it while checking out in gamestop the other day. They don't plan on going back to the old system of game-play the only big thing I saw in there.

That all sounds really...unusual. Like, it might actually be a problem. I've never heard of bleed-over effects like that.

While I've never had it as bad as Mazra, I've certainly experienced bleed over affects from games. Mostly where I subconsciously continue RPing a character IRL after spending a weekend trying to make sure all my in game decisions are in character.
