i was watching some SWG Vids on youtube and the lag looked really bad, especially on the battle of restuss. i was wondering what the lag is really like. is it really that bad? only on massive player events like restuss? all the time?

thx

Lag is a problem, it seems the servers can't really cope too well, even though the player numbers are not that great, whether its due to the core system or whether its due to old hardware supporting the game is debateable, what is certainly true, is that they are unable to stage live events of any real size without crashing servers, or at least, causing severe slow down, the restus event is certainly an indication of the problems SOE are facing with SWG.

so yes, at the moment the lag is that bad, my guess is the answer is a simple one, the core game is still the original swg, but the changes to make it a fps/turn based hybrid is making demands on the core program that perhaps its unable to cope with. as they already have a fps game in the form of planetside, have to wonder if perhaps they wouldnt have been better off modifying the planetside code for SWG, rather than doing what they did.

planetside handles much bigger numbers of players than swg does, and its a much better fps game than swg too, it handles it far better, none of this over the shoulder nonsense.

it improves when the graphics settings are turned down.

and if they were taken with fraps, at least with me, fraps drops my framerate aswell

... firstly the games graphics rate is capped at 30 fps, regardless of any other settings, and anyone with a card that has at least 256mb of onboard ram shouldnt have to turn the graphics down in any case, also, if you have at least 1gb of ram then there shouldnt be any slowdown due to the game - assuming you have a processor of at least 2ghz anyway, since most people have spec's that are way ahead of this, then graphic slowdown shouldnt be a problem, unless of course, the slowdown is serverside, which most of the time, it certainly is.

if you are having problems, then there are ways to tweak the serverside issues, to a degree at least.

in the options, under graphics, see how far your viewing distance is set for the different terrain models. realistically, if you have a dsl link of at least 1mb then that shouldnt be an issue, but it does cut down on serverside workload.

i dont really recommend cutting the viewing distances to less than 50 percent though, if your in a city during a live event, then 25 percent might be your best friend :D

turning the graphics down will help if you have 512 ram.

i have 512 ram, and i belive a 256 card, and i needed to trun the graphics down, but playing on a system with 1 gig ram, i was able to play without touching any settings
