It's been over a year now, so forgive me for not staying up-to-date on the latest SWG development.

I've recently gained my long lost Star Wars fetish and after having played Knights of the Old Republic and about every other Star Wars Jedi game I have, my eyes homed in on this one.

I used to have a Force sensitive character, but that was long before they revamped the profession system into what I believe you call the NGE (New Gaming Experience?). My character was at the time doing quests in The Village, but when I realized I would have to do tedious grinding for 4 months straight I quit. I'm curious as to what might have happened to that character now that they changed the system.

Also, is there a way to bring back deleted characters? I fear I might have deleted him, or that he has been deleted due to my absence.

Oh, and is it true that everyone can start off as Jedis now? No months of tedious grinding to become one? Or did I read the professions guide wrong?

I remember how being a Jedi was something worth a lot in the old game. I'd imagine if anyone could go Jedi they would.. or at least a lot of them. Are the servers flooded with Jedis now?

I'm downloading the trial to see if the game is worth reactivating, but if you could answer the above questions I'd appreciate it. Also, I apologize for not browsing through all the threads here first. I no longer have the option of searching the forum posts and I was unable to find answers on the first two pages.

If my questions have been answered in another thread, please direct me to it. Thank you.

The issue was never about balance. Its about having a game that recreates the movies. In the episode 4-5 time frame in which SWG is set Jedi were "all but extinct."

Allowing everyone to play jedi without any mechanism to limit them and making the no stonger than the other class directley conflicts with the movies. The game ceases being about Star Wars.

Admittedly pre-NGE there were way too many jedi, but at least there was some method to keep it in check. It just didn't go far enough.

To the OP, your characters should be still there, unless you deleted them. If you did, I don't think there will be a way to retreive them.

So far I've had little to no experience with the game, save for the launchpad. I downloaded and installed the trial yesterday (Friday) and at 5 pm (7 minutes after making this thread) it began downloading something that wasn't included in the installer. Well, it has now downloaded its own weight three times and is still going. Yesterday it estimated to be done at 5 am today (Saturday), but now it says 2 pm today.

Why the merry hell do you have to download a 600 megabyte file only to have it download another 3 gigabyte? Even with the faster connections that's bound to take some time. Roughly 24 hours for me, apparently.

Perhaps if I installed using my original discs, but I don't know if the trial will get activated that way.

I just hope it doesn't decide to download the expansions as well.

I just reactivated an account from early 2004 last week. I went through hell trying to get the SOE costumer service to tell me what my login was so I could get my password from back then. I had to actually go to my bank and get my old credit card number just to varify that I owned the account. If you still remember your user name and password from a year ago, you should be good to go. As for your force sensitive toon, you should be an Elder Jedi now in the NGE. Which pretty much makes you a bad ***. I recommend that you reactivate the account, you'll have alot of fun with your elder.
As for the downloading. What kind of connection are you using? It only took a couple of minutes to update for me when I first reinstalled the game.

i guess you must be on dial up, the original programming has been almost completely changed, which is why you've had to redownload everything, even on a 2mb dsl line it takes a couple of hours, to be honest, if your on dial up, then you arent really supported anymore in gameplay, pre-nge the game was based on the 240 ms turns etc, now, anyone not with a good latency and bandwidth is at the mercy of those who do. just means you will be really bad at combat. feel sorry for anyone still using dial up, i didnt think anyone did any more. if your serious about sticking with the game, then you really do need to get a dsl line. though that goes for a lot of other games too.

Nope, I think if he was SF he won't be elder jedi, only if he was a jedi initate, padawan, or above.

Finally got to play the game. And by play I mean PLAY. Woke up at 2pm, noticed the launchpad said "play" and not "downloading". Now, at 5am I logged out for the first time.

I must be weird, but I really like the new things they've added and changed. I like how you get to choose a profession and I especially like how they improved the tutorial area, makes you feel like you entered the movies.

I chose a Jedi since that was my main goal with the game in the first place. I like how I'm launched into the role of a Jedi instantly. And contrary to what I thought, not many play Jedi on the server I'm on. I must admit that I couldn't help but envy the guys who ran around in heavy armor and with a big rifle in their hands while I was nervously scratching my chin with my katana blade.

Now, there were some bad things as well.

The target-on-hover feature blows in almost every aspect. I've been playing World of Warcraft for too long probably, but having to keep that damn crosshair over my attackers to hit them just seems stupid. Click target to lock on and then spam buttons, now that's my kind of fun.

Another thing is that I, as a Jedi, had surprisingly good ranged weapon skills. In fact, I could kill anything with basically any weapon available. Sure, with a melee weapon I could hurl it at my target (Why can't I Force Throw my rifle? Would be awesome) and perform some special moves, but if I just went by the more tedious hold-mouse-button strategy, what weapon I was using had little to no effect on my rate of success.

Takes the point out of professions really.

But.. I'm only level 18 and there's much to learn yet. Can't wait until I get my first lightsaber.

melee weapons really suck in this combat system, especially when fighting a ranged npc who will just continually kite you

lol, as if there werent too many jedi in the game already.

though if the server populations were as high as they were pre-nge days, it probably wouldnt be as noticeable, but, i have a prediction, vanguard will be hosted by SOE, looks like Startrek online will be too, my guess is, shortly after vanguard is released, SWG will be wound down and closed same as earth and beyond was, that is of course, providing there isnt an increase in the number of players between now and then, which personally, i just dont see happening at least not on the PC, but, a ps3 release might generate enough interest to save it... maybe

I didn't see much difference population wise to be honest. Still traders spamming the place (although fewer of them, thank god) and still entertainers standing around, dancing and playing.

It's a solid game, but it draws a certain crowd. The more action craving players will go to World of Warcraft or something like it, where the action is more live and easier to manage. But first of all, I've always been a big fan of Star Wars, it runs in my family. Second, I'm facinated by the vast areas you can explore in the game. Even though I've been there a dozen times now, I can help but stop a few moments whenever I go to Jabba's palace. It's just so huge.

Although I originally wanted to be a Jedi (who doesn't?), I'm now starting to have second thoughts. Big blasters are awesome as well and since Jedi are no longer the badass thing to be, I might as well pick a Bounty Hunter, or perhaps even a Smuggler as I like smuggling goods.

The game still offers so much.

I will agree.. one of the more fun things about SWG is the Star Wars environment. It makes it even more cool when you are a big Star Wars fan (my whole family is also huge fans) so you know where all the locations are and have a small connection to them in a way.

The thing that negates the feeling of it being in a Star Wars universe though is the lack of veriety and choice. In Star Wars you could see so many differen't types of people with differen't jobs and unique uses. Now its all about Bounty Hunters, Jedi, and Commandos with the every now and again crafter or entertainer.

There really is a lack of choice.. before there were a ton of differen't choices in your profession of what you wanted to be and specialize in. You wanna be melee? alright you wanna be good with swords or fists? You like guns? Rifles or pistols?

I miss the whole scout tree a lot as well.. no more scouting, putting up camps, capturing creatures (in memory of some cool CH/BE friends :P )

Im going on a bit of a rant here Ill stop lol

Yes its true.. jedi are not good anymore. I haven't played it in a while but last I checked they weren't better then bounty hunter, commando, or medic...

I dont believe Smugglers can really "Smuggle" anything unless they changed something while I was gone... so if thats the only reason why you would wanna be a smuggler then you might wanna think again.

A lot of people Switched over to Bounty Hunter, Commando, and Medic because Jedi isn't good anymore (Guess what... they can all kick a jedis butt) Supposedly Medic is the best but I dont know that from experience... my recommendation though from the jobs you listed you wanted to be you should probably pick Bounty hunter.

remember though now you get 2 characters per server so you can make the other character whatever else you think might be cool...

anyhow sorry for ranting.. guess I kinda wanted to let out some steam haven't really done that in a while.

Good luck in SWG and if your playing on the Ahazi server tell some of my old friends (Igrecaehe, Isacc, Omegaradium) I said "hi" :)

when the nge was first introduced, the medic was perhaps the strongest of all combat classes, and jedi the weakest, honestly an entertainer with a pistol could be serious opponent to a jedi at the start.

now, they have improved jedi to the point where they can at least hold their own against the other classes. for a little while commando was one of the strongest, but there were too many jedi whines about lava cannons and heavy weapons, so that was nerfed into oblivion, about the only real choices now, in terms of combat, is either jedi or bounty hunter, as those are the most well supported in game. as for the other ranged combat classes, there isnt really that much distinction between them to really make them stand out any more.
the expertise system appears to be yet another practical joke, only nobody is really laughing, they reduced the effectiveness of the various classes special abilities, and assigned them to expertise trees by the sound of it, so that you can regain some, but not all of them, weird.
if thats the limit of dev inventiveness and creativity, then i dont think i would trust them to program a video recorder ;)

it'll probably keep the kiddies amused till the next publish though.

To answer one of your questions: Yes, the servers are overflooded with jedi.
