Has N00B become a derogitive term.Follow

I have now been playing this game for about 6 weeks, and when I started I thought of myself as a newb or Noob, without indignation. I even used this term to garner help from other more experienced players. I knew I was new and they new I was new. They could see me running towards them froma mile away with my standard artisan clothing and nothing better to my name but a smile.

So what has happened in the last couple weeks to make this name which I considered a right of passage into a hated slanderous cut. Every post I seem to read now has some one calling some one else a Noob, and that some else seems to take true offense, Why? Play the game, ignore the iddiots, and move on.

In my experience, incongruity between what a word actually means and how it is applied is pretty common. I don't think being a newb/N00B is disparaging by definition, but it is clearly a popular insult. The real insult isn't in the word used, the insult is the fact that someone wants to insult you. As far as I'm concerned, a person who wants to call me a newb could accomplish just as much by calling me a doodiehead. I'm not particularly moved by either term, but I get the implicit statement of insult.

This could be an interesting thread.

I myself use the word to refer to pple just starting the game, and who know nothing about it. So basically pple that are only in there first week or two of play. After that they get accustomed to the interface, and they generally know how the game works, such as combat, grouping, skills etc.
BUT, most people just use it as a durogatory term that they call people that they beleive inferior, whether it is in PVP, or if they just want to be plain idiots and cant come up with any other insult than noob. I mean if your going to insult someone at least be a little creative about it, its so noobish to use noob as an insult...

LOL these posts are great and I agree with them all, I was a newbie for a good month or two and I still learn new tricks all the time. I tend to call people a newb in the game but with a more affectionate twist immediately followed up with we have all been there and felt the way that they do, and to accomplish what they are asking I will send a detailed email explaining all details from opening the correct menu, choosing the correct tab for the question inquired about.

Newb in a insulting term is typically used by 12-18 year olds, or very immature older players. Your typical young adult or adult. (which this is game is actually played by alot of great ones) Is consider by most of as a right of passage, during which time your introduced to game basics where even the most lame trick seems like you have just been given a hint at doubling your efficency, etc...

The same people that use newbie/noob insultingly are the same ones who are upset there is no uber loot, like to asy the Pwned you after a fight, that certain things suxxor, or they have a fetish for the word Dewd. These people are either quickly ignored, or they start getting a big **** conversation going about how they should STFU, that calling me those names means Jack squat, and typically in game is followed up by me spamming duel challenges to them and me saying garbage like come here flamer, get PWNED yourself, and let me make you suxxor your own **** so that you learn that lame terms don't make you cool but only enemies. Talk about a satisfying duel, win won of those then spam tells and say stuff like hey I can be a pathetic child also.

Oh well all in all they are flamers with limited vocabularies, that seem to being comfortable with almost strictly spelling phonetically. LOL.
/end rant on topic

Noob and NEWBIE are two different things.

1) Noob-somoene (for example) the people who did the credit dupe. Makes changes to the game or uses glitches in the game to get what they want.

2) Newbie-a new person to a game and someone that needs help.

Syljon your probably talkin bout a newbie.

NOOB is a way of life unto itself. To be NOOB is to embrace all that is NOOBish in the world. Ode to thee oh great NOOB, how I adore thee...NOT!!! LOL

Buy new clothes, level up to get an ambiguous tag, and then do not talk to anyone for two weeks after starting. Then you can slowly move into the flow of SWG without the sometimes insulting and/or humorous stigma of being called a newbie.

Or we can all adopt the phrase "doodiehead" LOL.

the term is used in both the derogatory sense and the titular sense.

generally, those who say things like "stfu n00b" have very poor grammar and spelling, leading me to believe they also posess sub-normal intellects.

however, we are all, at one time or another, in one setting or another, newbies. that term meaning one who is naive or inexperienced.

in general, "newbie" is not a term used as insult, but then again gay wasnt always used that way either, and lets look at the people responsible for both changes.

also, anyone who spells with numbers is most likely an idiot.

and the word is derogatory, not derogitive...oy vey =)

There used to be a debate about the whole newb/n00b thing on GamersRoam.com(A Elder Scrolls fansite). Everyone there agreed to this.

n00b- An isulting term used to attack someone who acts imature or stupid (many time the insulter is also a "n00b"

Newb/Newbie- A person new to the game that can sometimes be annoying.

I must say, I agree
