So what is slicing? Full details please. thanx
Slicing is the cutting of certain wires in the items "mainframe" so to speak. You use tools called laser knifes to cut them, and you have to use molecular clamps, they tell you exactly what to do. If the slice is succesful, one ore more stats may be increased.

what happens if i give my armour/weapon/whatever else slicable to a smuggler and (assuming they dont leg it) they ***** up?

I've never had a slicer mess up because
1) I only use people that have the title "Slicer", because they know what they're doing and don't mess up.
2) These "slicers" use a tool called Molecular Clamps. These tell you exactly what cord to cut. I suggest you ask if they have molecular clamps before they slice, because if they mess up, your weapon (I think) loses power and it can't be sliced again.

Even better than a 'Slicer' is a 'Master Smuggler' as Masters receive a 5% bonus.
Slicing a weapon will increase either the speed or the damage, but not both.
Slicing armor will decrease the encumbrance or increase the percentage rating of the resists listed under 'Effectiveness' for that item.
Locked containers can be sliced open, but very rarely have anything noteworthy inside.
If a smuggler cuts the wrong wire, the weapon or armor is not harmed, but it cannot be sliced again and has no increase in stats.
If a container is mis-sliced, it will remain locked forever.

As of right now I do not know of any smugglers that do not use Molec Clamps for all slices. Just one thing to remember that the slices are totaly random. A smuggler even a master has no control over what atribute is affected by the slice. So if you are trying to get a full set of encumberance sliced armor be prepared to spend some money. The quality of the Armor Upgrade Kits and Weapon Upgrade Kits affect the percentage increase of each slice. The better the kit the more likely a smuggler is to get a good slice.
Just some info I thought I would pass on. And I wouldnt worry to much about getting ripped off by a smuggler, slicing is our bread and butter and to get a bad reputation would be like shooting ourselves in the foot. :)
