Fishing TechFollow

I know how to equip the bait and all that but how do you fish
I threw the line into a pond and the bait just goes soggy then mushy. If i move it it eventually reels in. sometimes there is a nibble which reduce my bait and if there is a bait my line always washes ashore or the bait is taken. How do i catch fish?
