Stick a fork in SWGFollow

#1 Jan 24 2004 at 12:37 AM Rating: Default
I logged on today after much time away from the game. I ran into two peeps in town. I see many fell victim to the force trick " this isn't the game were looking for, move along!"
well back to everquest at least it has content and something to work towards all be it mind numbing as it is. BAAA BAAAA where did the sheep go?

It is very apparent you have been away from the game for awhile.

While the game did start to regress when you returned, now that your gone, it can continue getting better!

Just some thoughts...

Yeah sure, the game is improving, since when? SOE has struggled to introduce any kind of interesting content into the game from day 1. The so-called story line missions for the Cries of Alderaan amount to little more than annoying Fedex missions. The storyline that goes with them is barely interesting, and not worth the hours of time spent trying to accomplish them. The worst part? You're expected to run these missions by yourself! Well, I can run it in a group if I want to, right? Not so with the Act 3 missions, everyone in your group receives different waypoints for the same mission. Meaning that I'm spending my hard earned money to play an MMORPG that ends up being an extremely poorly written single player game. If I were to add up all the time I've spent waiting for freakin shuttles, its probably something on the order of 3 hours. Those of you who play more than I do have spent much, much more.

All this wouldn't be so bad, if there was something relevant to do in the game. The Act 3 missions, you know the ones that I have to run solo, I CAN'T EVEN DO THEM BY MYSELF. Its been pretty much set up so that only a commando, or a master CH can run these missions solo, so why in the heck aren't they groupable missions? The only reason you have to interact with people at all in this game is because players must manufacture all the things you need to make the game at all playable. This is perhaps the one redeeming thing about SWG.

For the most part, I've given up on the whole rebel/imperial thing, because there is really no point anyways. So what if the rebels won acts 1 and 2, did we get anything for it? I suppose it really doesn't matter who wins act 3 either, because it doesn't mean a damn thing. The PvP element in the game just plain stinks. 2 or 3 character classes dominate the combat, and there's normally so much lag when any kind of large combat takes place that its not worth it. And don't think you can blame the lag on my system, 2.8 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM, SATA HD, and a Radeon 9800 Pro for graphics. Sorry SOE, but I think the lag is definetly because your server code sucks a**. Lag aside, when one "wins" a battle, what do they have to show for it: Nothing. You don't get loot for PvP, you don't get credits, all you get is lousy faction points. Points that mean nothing to rebels because there's almost nothing worth buying with them.

Stick a fork in SWG? Perhaps. The game has a great deal of potential, but thus far, SOE has squandered it. How about rethinking the game around the idea that ITS MULTIPLAYER. Encourage grouping, especially in the Act theme missions. REQUIRE a group to make it succeed. At the very least, don't punish those of us who want to run the missions as a group. Who cares if people have newbs tag along in their group, or people use groups to "power" through the missions, so what? At least people are playing together, which is the purpose of an MMORPG. Running Fedex missions accross barren, non-descript landscape for no tangible reward does not make for interesting or gripping content.

Czda could have a valid point?

I have played Ultima, Everquest, and Asheron's Call (beta), and, well, ummm, hmmm, his argument could describe each of those games as well.

No real content with any attempt at content being nothing more than FedEx missions (gather 8000 batwings to talk to NPC X).

That is what a MMORPG is, if it had a beginning and ending than it would END. They wouldn't make much money that way.

Czda, you must never have played Everquest, the boats took longer between trips, and many NPC's were (ARE) 24-72 hour camps. Talk about wasting your time.

A game is what you make out of it, and SWG allows people to make a lot more than most of the others.

Some people can take a stick and a rock, and create a vividly real imaginary game that would enthrall them for hours.

Others need to be lead by the nose from point A to point B with little resistance to their progress.

To each their own....

I haven't begun Act 3 yet, so cannot comment on ir. However, that being said, I have never seen any quest in SWG that MAKES you go solo. I am only guessing that none of your "friends" are willing to help you at your waypoint before going to their own (much like the "trials" in EQ, where it was every person for themselves, with friends "stabbing" each other in the back for a chance to get in a "good" group).

Do you play on Gorath? I would be willing to give you a hand.

Like I said, SWG is what you make of it.

You can play it like a ONE person game, or you can take the time to meet the right KINDS of people, and they will show you what a MMORPG truly can be.

Just some thoughts....

Czda - Bingo, give that man a cigar. You very nicely described what many of us are feeling. I'm really struggling to find a reason to play any more. I recently mastered pistoleer, and have a good anmount of CH, so I can kill most of what I want. Whoopee. I have done the theme parks I wanted, and was really disappointed in them, and their "rewards" (come on, some dang bangle bracelets from the emperor). I acquired 5 holocrons, some through looting, some through terading, so I had hope for a "higher" goal. Well after 5 boxes of Carbineer, because of a holocron(keep in mind that I'm already a master pistoleer), I find out that holocrons may or may not mean anything to me. where do i go from here? Sorry, but 15 bucks a month for a few POI's just aren't doing it for me. My wife is having fun using a toon on another server for chat-room purposes though. Frustrating to say the least.

I'm mastering Carbineer/Fencer for the exact purpose of running the act missions. I've realized that the good content (note that I said good, not great or tremendous, but good) is only worth it if you good enough to do them. Like most games, once you get done learning how to play the game, you can actively pursue the game's actual meat and bones. Try playing any sports game out now! Madden has you memorizing plays and pushing numerous buttons to pull of plays, and if you don't get through the practicing and stuff, your whole game will end up being a waste of time. If you want to access content, you must prove your worth and train yourself. Get stronger, more knowledgable, and then have fun.

PS- This is in response to the first post on this thread! :)
