Guild levequests are one way: http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/1509/ffxivgame20100907060833.png

I'd imagine it will be craftable as well, eventually (Or maybe it is already, just need to find the recipe!).

**EDIT: It's a fairly substantial upgrade. Just submitted this to the ZAM database email address, thought you may want a peek until it's added:

Item Name: Willow Fishing Rod

Fastest way would be to ask somebody who has been there already to teleport you. Otherwise, you have to walk and/or take a ferry. If I remember right, Ul'dah is in the center of the map, with Limsa Lominsa to the west of it, and Gridania to the east.

You are also able to get this rod from one of the fieldcraft leves at skull camp. You will need to be app. rank 8 or 9 to do it. It says you need to be rank ten but I did it at nine.

It's possible :) I just went from Gridania > Ul'dah > Limsa Lominsa last night for an adventure, and it actually wasn't all that difficult (only time consuming!). If you're going from Gridania I think that the fastest route is to run to Camp Tranquil then run straight down that path until you reach Thalanan. Once you reach Thalanan just open up your map, and you should see Ul'dah towards the middle, and the ferry docks for Limsa Lominsa will be farthest west you can go on the map. For the most part, I think that you stay on the main paths in these areas to reach the cities. :) Good luck!

It seems that its totally unnecessary to go to a different city to get this as a quest reward. After 4 or 5 rounds of level 10 Fishing quests from Limsa Lominsa I finally got a Willow Fishing Rod as a quest reward. It seems its just a matter of time until you get it as a reward. Yayy

Also, you can repeat the levequest and get the same reward. I've already given one spare to a shell member who decided to pick up fishing ^_^

It's no longer here in retail, the same leve now gave me a rank 17 Tarred Walking Hat. I'm planning on doing the leves in Ul'dah and Gridania tonight and if I find it I'll update this post.

Dang.. hope it's just a case of a lucky randomness on the item. Was very very handy just getting the rod from the leve. Particularly now that the skill points are a tad harder to get.

I just did the leve in Limsa again and this time I got a Crow Fly as reward. The other cities didn't have it either. I can't seem to find a recipe for it either, I think I'll go shout for one in Limsa, hopefully I'll get lucky. My current rod isn't as effective in grade 2 and higher water :(

Going to try exchanging multiple (okay all 8) leves next reset on the Crow Fly one, see if maybe it upgrades the item... aside from that.. decided screw the weapon going to under take a project to get either the Ash or Bamboo rod made. Bamboo just a tad tougher, but I've seen some of the mats for it already in Bazaars.

Ash Fishing Rod is exactly the same stats as a Weathered Fishing Rod. (Edit: Incorrect. My apologies, this was true in Beta but is not true in retail. In Retail the Optimal Rank has been increased to 7 and there is a slight stat boost.)

I am going to attempt taking the recipe premise for the Ash Fishing Rod and make some substitutions to try and see if I can determine the recipe for the Willow Fishing Rod tonight.

Yeah max leve exchange didn't help any at all (other then give a hole crap load of gold for it). Yeah I've been meaning to try that myself, however currently lack to skills to make the metallic parts.. all these dang crafts I have underway.. and somehow it's always the ones I don't have that I need.

The recipe for Ash Fishing Rod is Ice Shard x4, Wind Shard x6, Iron Wire, Ash Branch, Ash Lumber, Hempen Bowstring, Bronze Fish Hook, Bronze Reel.

The Iron Wire is an Armorer Rank 21 synth, and the Bronze Reel is a Blacksmith Rank 15 synth.

Assuming that the Ash Branch and Ash Lumber are substituted with Willow Branch and Willow Lumber, other possible substitutions include Bronze Gorge Hook, Iron Fish Hook (most likely in my opinion), Iron Gorge Hook, Silver Wire, and Brass Reel.

The Iron & Silver synths are all in the 20's, so yeah, I am not quite up to skill yet in order to attempt producing these. I will attempt them at a later time.

I have noticed considerable improvements when upgrading my armor though.

Agreed. I have been doing the same and have not seen it yet.

At the moment, it appears as if this is gained through crafting only. Unfortunately a recipe is not listed as of yet.

I've been recycling the leves and the ash rod isn't a reward either. Someone saw me shout and invited me to their ls, he's ranking his carpenter to make me a better rod, lol. Even shouting with a 40k reward didn't get me any tell's except the guy who's now helping me.

I haven't seen any rod's in bazaar's when I checked though but it takes so long to keep track of the retainers without some form of search so I'm just waiting, I should get a better rod tomorrow... XP from leves is starting to fall of very fast too, I get same xp catching normal fish from rank 10 leves as I do fishing in grade 3 water in the Black shroud, I should try the grade 4 I found in beta but there's a agro mob nearby and the grade 8 beach has snippers and salamanders that agro...

Unsure if it's legit or not, but this site lists a recipe for a bamboo rod which is a step higher then the willow. Could be useful in comparison for figuring out the willow rod.

It's the last openish area with a stream through it before you zone into Thanalan, past camp Tranquil.

Thanks for the heads up. That is a recent recipe update. The good news is that the iron wire and hempen bowstring remained the same, but unfortunately the bronze reel changed to brass reel for the Bamboo Fishing Rod.

Any level 20+ armorers available on Mysidia yet, send me a tell! :)

I am using the comparison of Ash vs Bamboo to try and determine the medium (Willow) recipe. Nakki Leather isn't used in the Ash Fishing Rod synth and I doubt it is in the Willow synth. It is still going to require quite a bit of playing around with.

I'm going right for the bamboo components myself, figure by the time I do gather them all, should have some people high enough to synth it. As for nakki leather, I have already seen it once (wish I'd grabbed it) in someones personal bazaar.

Well I got my first 2 rank 20 leves last night and the reward was only gil...

It did, however, show me more rank 3 spots in the Black shroud, east of camp Tranquil. On the other hand, it's infested with agro mobs and notably the fish up 3 fish leve spot was in a dead end guarded by a lone wolf...

The other leve wanted me to check out 3 spots, first 2 were easy but the third seemed to be up on a cliff or inside a cave, after I failed the leve I kept trying to access that spot for a while until I just gave up and let the agro mobs eat me.

Me thinks SE wants you to level a combat job besides fisher, why else would the spots be smack in the middle of agro mobs?

Hmm, I started the two Camp Tranquill level 20 leves last night as well. I completed the catch three Monke-Onke's one and was rewarded with a little less than 10k gil and a Water Cluster!!! That was nice, because I almost never get water shards. I found the East side to be almost abandoned of aggro mobs compared to the west side. I never saw a lone wolf. I loved the grade 3 location where I caught the Monke-Onke's at and instead of moving on to the next levequest decided to stay there and skill-up some more. Made about 10k SP in a little over an hour. It was nice seeing skillups of 130+ again compared to the 60's & 70's I was getting in Grade I or II spots.

I plan to attempt the other level 20 levequest this evening. It's reward is exactly 10k gil but that's all.

I'm about to give up on getting a better fish rod and fishing completely because of it.

I found another carpenter but then we found out we need a rank 21 armorer item and the reel is hard to get too it seems. It was so easy to get in beta but in retail I can't even get a ash fising rod because of a few missing ingredients... MY linkshell didn't like me complaining about it either /shrug everyone and their sister is making armor/weapons but not a single fishing rod is for sale on my server...

You can get them at rank 15. They are Gridania only.

I believe the rank 30 ones you should be able to get at rank 25, and they are Limsa Lominsa only.

Rank 40 is Ul'Dah.

As far as upgrading fishing rods, I've found it impossible to do (although, it has not been my top priority, I have been trying). I have a friend carpenter who could craft the Ash rod, but finding the reel is impossible. I've shouted and checked bazaars for the mats or even finished rods, but can't seem to get lucky.

The reel is a rank 15 Blacksmith synth. It should be available. I successfully gathered the parts necessary and made one, but the Iron Wire required is a rank 21 Armorer synth. That one is a bit more difficult, and from all of the sites I have checked, it is not sold by vendor.

It is probably just a matter of being patient for another week or so.

Saw some willow fishing rods for sale (at least 5) in a retainer for 100k each today. I debated buying one but the last 100k purchase I made was for an ornamental chaser hammer which ended up going under 50k the very next day. At least now I know that the rods are finally coming on to the market.

Hrm.. that recipe is kind of nasty... with the exception of actually making it, The bamboo rod uses nearly the same items. The only thing I've not run across (although not actively shouted for) is the Antelope Horn.

I had a carpenter friend try the recipe with the ingredients YG lists for the Bamboo rod.

"You cannot make anything with those materials." Good job YG!!!

The next day the willow rod recipe popped up and had my carpenter friend make me one. xD

Tipped him 20k he was thrilled. 100k for this rod is a total gouge. It's nice to have, but you can rank just fine at grade 3 with weathered or ash rod. My advice if you don't have a lot of gil, is wait for more people to start making them, or find a carpenter to make it for you.

I do have all of the materials for the Willow Rod. I finished acquiring those last night, and have lots of materials to spare now.

The most expensive ingredients were the iron wire and the brass reel. Iron Wire took 2x Iron Ingots (which are 5x iron nuggets @4k each) so that came out to 40k, but at least you got 12. The Brass Reel is about 25k for one (brass ingot, brass plate, brass rivets).

I can start producing quite a few of these on Mysidia now if anyone needs one send me a pm.

For the Bamboo Rod, I was just missing the Antelope Horn, but if that recipe is incorrect well... we'll start over I guess. I was able to find someone selling Nakki Leather for only 5k so I snatched up all he had quickly.

I have seen a few Willow Rods for sale on Mysida about 2-3 days ago for 187,500 each.

Got my Willow Rod made last night. I tried to attempt it myself as Carpenter 11 with Common guild support. I received the message that I needed to wait till I was of greater skill, so this synth is NOT a level 11 Carpenter synth.

I had it made by a level 21 Carpenter and he appeared to have a few struggles with the synthesis.

After fishing with the new rod last night. The very first thing that I noticed was that the "remainder" bar depleted less when missing my target zone. Therefore, it allowed more attempts to catch the fish in the correct zone.
