Excellent guide for pvp newbs like myself. Thanks

I suggest you divide it into stuns, short-term incapacitates and true CC. Cyclone's in a category of its own, really, but I'd chuck it in the last. You might want to note scare beast for hunters vs animal form druids, hibernate for druids vs the same and shackle undead for priests vs lichborne DKs.

I would like to know how good pvp'ers literally run circles around me, and I want to do that as well.

I am a horrible at pvp, but do enjoy it on occasion.

I am not a keyboard turner, well I was, but now I'm a hybrid I guess. I use the keys and the mouse to move, but always willing to learn more.

Strafe with WASD
Unbind keyboard turning

Apply snares and only use globals when you are facing enemies back. Always try to have them moving slower then you (snares). Some of it is lag and reaction specific too. Missing a kidney shot because you tried to do it from the front sucks. Person who is behind has the advantage so its always a mini game in PVP melee to be the one with that advantage.

Generally, every PvPer has a run speed enchant or meta gem (though not both, they don't stack). Classes like DK, rogue, etc all have run speed built into their class in some way (and it's generally more than the 8% provided by enchant/meta): DKs have unholy presence and unholy aura, rogues have fleet footed, etc.

8% run speed may not seem like much, but trust me when I say it's significant, especially when you're snared.

That another thing, make sure you snare your opponent, since they're going to do that to you.

The most boring (or perhaps not boring depending on your preference) way to learn how to PvP and especially how to move in PvP is to watch videos at Warcraftmovies. Choose your class, filter to just PvP videos, and watch the best of your class. I learned a lot from videos by watching and then emulating what I saw.

Watching videos is great but it's only "theory". Same with reading forums. Never give up "practice" in BGs, duals, etc. Both theory and practice are needed to excel, but don't try to do one without the other.

Learning how to "circle strafe" (turning with the mouse while strafing with the keys) or effective "jump-shotting" (jump, mouse-turn 180Ëš, use instant ability, mouse-turn back to your original running direction) and other movement tricks are vital for PvPing in any competitive way.

One thing that I've done to improve my PvP (though I'm still pretty bad) is to record short videos and watch back over them afterward. If your system can handle even small videos, try it. Look for the ways other players "got you" and look for ways you could have done better.

GG Theo, the post/thread is really very useful. Thanks!

Who do we bribe to get a PvP forum?

I see that you have some macros going on in there.

How do you decide which spells are useful to put into a macro? And what kind of macros? Examples would be nice.

I'm getting started doing macros, I do my own macros tailored to my own style but I'm still just doing some basic stuff so far like mouseover fear and castsequence to save keyboard space because my fingers only reach from the ` to the 6 without moving my hand. (Yes I have piano hands).

My thinking behind doing mouseover fear was "oh cool I can fear the other guy without switching targets", works nice in arena with those enemy unitframes that come in the default UI because I can mouseover the unitframe and it will work.

I'm still using the default UI for now for now because I don't want to flood myself with information and end up with a spreadsheet of timers blocking my view, and because I'm still learning to set up my UI and I'm going step by step on this.

Yeah, definitely true, which I why I suggested that you try out things that you see in videos. Smiley: wink

Hey Theo, what's up with you being all helpful and nice instead of telling people how much they suck?

Also, duels > Bg's for practising PvP. Especially because I've found most of the decent PvPers to be happy to tell you where you're messing up and give you tips and those guys are always outside of Ogrimmar/IF.

I think they'll get one when you finally get around to getting us that pic of you standing over the corpse of a Draenei shaman you've killed in 1v1 world PVP.

They probably won't even then, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to tease you. How've you been? You ever get your 100k kills title? Is that title even there for that number anymore, or does it take more now?

In terms of difficulty/skill the duelers are harder than most of the BG population.

But there's elements that change a lot between 1v1 and NvN, like, in 1v1 you don't care so much about waiting out a sap or sheep, in 2v2 you wait out a sap and then a sheep and someone else dies.

And in BGs you need to do things other than just killing enemies. As killing them just causes them to respawn and it doesn't make you win.

Ah, I don't know that this thread really needed to be moved, since I put up a newer and better thread that actually has linked posts, but that works. Smiley: grin

Hey poldaran, long time no see! I've still been playing wow my main is now a disc priest . Just got my wrathful shoulders recently and it's my 3rd class I've gotten 2k +.

Hehe speaking of the shammy thing. I actually ended up being a drainei shammy once faction change came out. How's that for irony eh? I've been lurking on sk, ej & oboards(shudder) for the past couple years due to lack of pvp forum here but I'm thrilled they finally got it done here at Allah!

How you been? Still posting like a fiend I see? ;)

All CC breaks under a certain amount of damage; most breaks on even one damage, some break on more. Unless noted, assume that the CC breaks on any damage. Below outlines CC from other classes. If I'm missing something about your class, please post and I'll add it in.

You may want to say something about the invulnerability of Druid's Cyclone and Warlock's Banish. Neither break on damage, but neither can take damage (or healed for that matter).

Also I believe you have left out Mage's Frost Nova.

Frost Nova is almost never used as a CC, and almost always as a way to set up a shatter, or at least putting pressure on healers.

Also, this is the old PvP FAQ, please refer to the sticky and post there.
