The clouds of speculation have been mildly annoying, the fake 'details' a bit more so. In a few hours we'll have something solid enough to talk about.

Don't need speculation to pad your post count, though. Smiley: lol

I'd certainly consider coming back if it meant invading Draenor. Particularly if it meant they finally DID something with the Draenei. Unused game assets like that drive me insane.

I'm hoping for a Cataclysm-style rework of the 60-70 leveling areas, along with more new Outland Areas for 90-100.

Or maybe we could get a 60-70 rework (this shouldn't hurt the endgame anywhere nearly as bad as Cataclysm did because Outland is far smaller than EK+Kalimdor) and maybe something the Burning Legion invade Azeroth (again). In fact, this sounds more likely because of all the banter that Wrathion was doing during MoP about Azeroth not being able to stand against the darkness while the war was going on, blah blah.

Still, I hope they redo Outland. The quests there are just so drab and boring, the quest rewards are very poorly itemized and spread out, some of the quest chains could use some serious work (especially the "get x items" quests that require 10+ kills per drop), some of the areas could use a rework to make them more streamlined, etc etc.

Though it'd be a bit too little, too late as all of my characters are Lv90 now. Unless, of course, they give us a new race or class. Which that'd be awesome, as long as they increase the character slots per server to compensate. Then I could see the new Outland a couple times.

To be honest, I'm still a proponent of the "Make Outland a big CoT cavern" and being done with it.

Same with Northrend.

A rework would be nice, but the game is ultimately too expansive now for them to be investing so much energy into restoring the leveling content.

To be honest, I'd prefer they just create an avenue to skip to level 80 or so... And coming from me, who spends nearly all his time in MMOs leveling, that's saying something.

In the context of Draenor, a CoT instance might actually be nice, though. Kind of lets you explore the basic lore of the Draenei again (because it hasn't been touched in 6 years).

A CoT idea is cool, but I still think that the 60-70 leveling phase really really needs work.

They made 1-60 OK again (not awesome, but "OK", which is loads better than it was before Cata) so it is "Meh" for 1-60 then you get to 60 and you get 10% XP from mob kills and it is "meh now I am forced to go to Outland..." so you go to Outland and it is "yuck...." until you finally claw your way till 68.

Then you get to Northrend and it is "meh" again. Northrend is better than Outland, 'cept that it feels like it drags on and on and on, esp since you MUST get to Level 80 (not 78) to start Cataclysm.

But at least you get MoP weapons by then, lol. So you can at least make it fast and easy. I remember getting 4 levels (76-80) in about 2-3 hours mowing through Sholazar doing all the quests then picking up the obscene number of herbs laying around with my Monk.

As far as replacing the leveling area, not sure how you'd do that, we surely don't want to just hand out free levelups, though with things like that XP potion we might as well be doing that sometimes lol.

Perhaps create some easy solo scenarios that reward lucrative amounts of XP? I dunno.

Honestly, giving players who have reached level cap the option to "skip" to level, say, 80 would probably be the healthiest possible option for the game.

I liked the new 1-60 the first two times through. When I leveled my third character it was decidedly unfun. My 4-6th toons (no more are planned, I want to be done with leveling!) are leveled to 58 exclusively through dungeons when they have enough rested exp.
Outland and Northrend questing I can stomach, sometimes it is even fun. 80-85 is agonizing and it gets worse once you enter Pandaria.

I hope they bring back Illidan; his Black Temple exit was far too underwhelming for a character like him.

God dammit digg. I was going to make a Blizzcon thread, but now there's no need with this one.

How the hell am I going to get Guru now?

Anyways, predictions for this expansion: Burning Legion, Illidan redemption, new models, and a fourth spec for all classes but druid. Oh, and item squish and level 100, Timewalker dungeons (low level dungeons with your character scaled down to its level) and other character scaling mechanics.

T-minus one hour.

(Grom Hellscream is rumored to be the villain of WoD, by the way)

Anyone care to speculate on a release date?
History would point to 4th quarter release, so sometime October/November/December of 2014. That's a pretty far off date. It would be interesting to see how it all pans out with subscription numbers going forward. Furthermore, if there's an influx of returning players upon release, how will the connected realms handle the traffic.

4th quarter of 2014 does sound like a long time, really too long if they're trying to get stuff out faster these days. That's over a year with nothing other than a couple of pre-expansion events? Not that they haven't done that kind of thing before, but times are changing and stuff can't really take as long as it used to anymore.

I'd be hoping for something like May-June 2014. You know around when all those high-school/college types get out for their summer break.

What the hell is this, a comic book? Won't ANYONE stay dead?

And the impact of redemption stories is a lot less meaningful if it never sticks.

I'm predicting Late 2nd Q 2014 or Early 3rd Q 2014. They really want to push out new expansions quicker, so sometime around then gives a significant period of time for finishing up Siege of Orgrimmar without it going to ridiculous ICC levels.

Now on to the actual WoD announcement.

They really didn't say much. Level cap of 100, new world Draenor, and... fortifying your garrisons? What's that?

Oh, and new player models. Dorf and Orc shown, which look fantastic.

All in all, not much that wasn't expected. The WoD panel coming up soon will be very interesting to see, because they've sure got some 'splainin to do that the trailer didn't. Like why the hell we would be interested in going back in time to an undestroyed Draenor. I know it's not for the shiggles.

Info on Garrisons, from the official Blizzard press release:

Quote:
To establish a foothold on Draenor once they’ve arrived, the displaced champions of the Horde and Alliance will be able to construct their own Garrison, an expandable, customizable stronghold that will serve as each player’s personal base of operations throughout the course of the expansion. As the Garrison grows, players will be able to recruit NPC allies and followers to take up residence, gathering resources and embarking on missions on the player’s orders.

Here's the full press release, with a bit of more info than the trailer:

Quote:
ANAHEIM, Calif.—November 8, 2013—The heroes of Azeroth are on the verge of a war that will reforge the fate of two worlds. Announced today at BlizzCon® 2013, World of Warcraft®: Warlords of Draenor™, the fifth expansion to Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game, sends players to the world of Draenor at a pivotal moment in history to fight against and alongside legends from Warcraft’s brutal past.

Across Draenor's savage jungles and battle-scarred plains, Azeroth's heroes will engage in a mythic conflict involving mystical draenei champions and mighty orc clans, and cross axes with the likes of Grommash Hellscream, Blackhand, and Ner’zhul at the height of their primal power. Players will need to scour this unwelcoming land in search of allies to help build a desperate defense against the old Horde’s formidable engine of conquest—or else watch their own world’s bloody, war-torn history repeat itself.

“Warlords of Draenor gives players a chance to take a commanding role in one of the Warcraft series’ most crucial conflicts,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “This expansion also includes features that make it easy for anyone to jump right into the action, whether they’ve played WoW at some point in the past or are just setting foot in Azeroth for the first time.”

To help new and returning players answer the call to arms on Draenor, the expansion will enable anyone to instantly boost one character to level 90, including a newly created character, quickly getting them up to speed and ready to enjoy the latest content with their friends.

Warlords of Draenor will also introduce fully revamped player character models and animations for many of World of Warcraft’s existing playable races, bringing the orcs, humans, and several other longtime residents of Azeroth up to the visual standards of newer races while still maintaining their iconic style and identity.

Along with these new features, World of Warcraft players will enjoy a wide array of new content on their way to the new level cap of 100, including new Zones, Dungeons, Raids, Scenarios, Battlegrounds, and more. Warlords of Draenor will also introduce questing improvements designed to encourage exploration and add unpredictability to players’ ongoing adventures.

BlizzCon 2013 attendees are able to play World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor on the show floor, and BlizzCon Virtual Ticket buyers can learn more about the expansion online by watching panels taking place during the event. Further details about Warlords of Draenor will be announced as development continues. For more information, visit the expansion’s official website at www.worldofwarcraft.com/warlords.

The difference being this time they've actually shown them. There's been a noticable amount of work done on the models, even from what we can see in game right now. In recent raids most of the bosses and mobs are using redone models and textures. All of the trolls in ToT, for example, are using a new skeleton which I assume is what the new troll player model will be based off of - it's not the old troll models reskinned.

Even without looking at what Blizzard has so far, there's plenty of evidence that they are much farther along in this than they were back pre-Cata or pre-Mists.

That said, I think that what we've seen looks perfect. They maintain the WoW style, without making them look like just old models with a fresh coat of paint or completely new models. It's pretty much exactly what I would describe "WoW HD" as.

There are other names for Team Evil than "Horde," Blizzard.
