Elementals are now invading as part of the Cataclysm pre-launch event. There are new quests available in major cities like Stormwind and Orgrimmar, and elementals are spawning in various zones. You can destroy one of each type of elemental rift during the event to earn a feat of strength.

Awesome! Time to go kick some elemental butt!

(and here's hoping these events will be less detrimental to normal gameplay than the pre-wrath event was.)

I'm wondering if I can keep the Doomsday sign and wear it around at level 85.

That would be awesome.

It appears to only go to a certain point right now. I can do all the Twilight Cultist stuff but it ends after that.

An update from Wohead,

Found that out as well.

Edit: Nvm, mmo-champ answered my question.
Quote:
* Rifts appears everywhere, including Northrend and Outland.
* Rifts have a 1 hour respawn timer.
* You have to kill rifts of your own levels to get the achievements, if you're level 80 look for them in Northrend.
* Rifts are destroyed by killing elementals, each elemental death lowers the health of the rift.
* The Mysterious Object looted from rifts gives a daily quest with gold/XP reward.

Anyone know how often the invasions happen? Or are they actually up yet? The quest kind of implied they were just laying the groundwork for the invasions...

The quest to begin killing the elementals is not live so you can't do it yet. I read something about using goggles so that you can see the elementals but that was on wowhead I believe.

In regards to getting the achievement for killing the elementals out in the world...

I killed a Wind one in BT and got the buff.
I killed a Water one in DB about 10min later... no buff.
I killed a Fire one about 35min later... no buff.
I killed an Earth one about 3min later... no buff.

Any clue why I didn't get an achievement?

I killed them all within 5 yards of me, and I had tagged all of them.

I can't help you PentUp, but I can disprove some of what all the websites are saying;

You do not need to kill rifts of your own level to get the "Tripping the Rifts" achievement.

If this isn't intended, I can imagine it getting a hotfix, but I just got the achievement at 11/02/10 (that's 02/11/2010 for you Americanos) around 1 'o clock by killing only Outlands-based rifts.

Outlands seems to be the best place to get this Feat of Strength - you can teleport to Shattrath, fly to Terrokar for Air, Zangarmarsh for Water and Nagrand for Earth. The only real amount of effort involved is when you have to fly all the way over to Hellfire to get Fire. Since the portals spawn once per hour, just wait until the correct time before setting off to Terrokar (for me all portals spawned around 00:50), after which you should be able to get all elements in one go.

The quests to actually kill these rifts don't seem to be active yet, but I can pretty much confirm that you will most likely need to kill rifts of your own level to do these. From what I've seen the rifts are supposed to turn into devices required for these quests - they did so in Outlands, but I couldn't in any way interact with these devices.

I think I figured it out... You can't just kill one elemental and run to the next rift... you have to stick around til the rift closes and then you'll get the buff.

So you can still get the achievement without needing to finish the quest line that's not available yet?

Depends on the achievement. The "Tripping the Rifts" feat of strength - yeah. I don't know about any other achievements.

Did the quest series in Org, here's results -

Level 80 will earn 111g and 1400 rep

Level 3 can't do anything (did see a level 5 doing the cult quests though) but the "talk to the guy next to Thrall" quest - earns 25xp and 40c

Level 11 earned a total of 6430xp (I didn't do the last part because I wanted the robe for the toon - bank toon - but guessing 875 for turning in the robe) 19s and 40c

By the way, check out the model of Cho'Gall while you're doing the quest. Mousing over him makes the shadowy model get highlighted and more clear. It took me by surprise.

Apparently he fled to the south of Kalimdor after Warcraft II and hid out in AQ. I think a bit of C'Thun rubbed off on him. I now cannot help but think of an Eddie Izzard sketch when I see him, except with eyes instead of bees.

I found 4 rifts now.2 fire ones in the barrens at crossroads and ratchet..and they were not on the hour so it's a random spawn time.

I also found an earth on flying over Skorn in Howling Fjord, so going by the 3 I've seen they spawn in populated areas.

*In Grizzly Hills I just got the earth one completed and picked up the Hammering it Out quest item at Hearts Blood Shrine.*

So it seems to me just ride or fly around to populated areas until you see a rift. *= added info

This link to wowhead has all the spawn points.

The time does seem to be random or at least not at the x:00.

It seems like the rifts are only for flavor on EU realms ATM. there is no buff associated with them, no device left behind and certainly no FoS.
All that might be enabled in the next stage.

Correction: Just don't expect to see either device or buff turning up for you. Pretty buggy ATM (or is it "not working as intended"?).

Dunno if you actually need to GET the buff for the achievement.

EDIT: You DO need to get the buff for it to count. So if you found and closed a rift without getting the associated buff: tough luck, you have to find another rift for that element.

I hope they expand and improve upon this (the undead pyramid invasion zones were way kewler plus there was loot) as I'm underwhelmed at the moment - I'm not flying all over heck's half acre just for an achievement and a 13g daily reward.

I'm doing it on my main only. Actually, I did it already, but I only got 2 buffs so I have to re-do earth and fire... =(

I think it's funny that: The doom sayers are predicting the end of Azeroth & we are trying to stop them from spreading their lies. When in reality we know the end is coming.
It's like the old D&D days when you read about a monster your character was fighting, but the DM wouldn't let you use that info because your character didn't have knowledge about that monster. You had to play your character.

Not sure if that was a spoiler, but I didn't want to take a chance.

What do you mean, "in reality we know the end is coming?" Is this because we know all the changes that are going to affect the world when Deathwing escapes by going to places like www.worldofwarcraft.com and viewing them. Or is there something I missed in game that tells us all this is going to happen?

If it's the first you can't really associate our characters knowledge in game with information happening out of game.
