I am currently a level 15 rogue with about 30g. I have mining and skinning. I really want to get into engineering but I know its expensive. I hear to wait until 40 to take up a craft, is it true? I am pretty sure I will never have 1000g for dual spec, but as a rogue will you really need it? I was looking for a class I could take it easy on, do some instances and have fun leveling. I was looking for some ways to make money, not really easy ways, just some ways.

I know it will be difficult if I am only doing instances, because I am not much for solo questing for the most part, maybe because I have been through the early areas so many times. Any advice will help a lot, thank you.

Mining and Skinning are what I took on my new Mage, actually. Gathering professions are usually a good bet for making money when you don't have a higher level toon to send money from. As a singular Alliance character on an all-Horde line-up means all I could send over were a couple Heirlooms.

If you -really- want to work on engineering, be aware that you'll be needing to buy supplemental materials on the AH that mining/smelting alone won't be able to cover. So, that's the part that makes it expensive. My recommendation would be to keep Mining and Skinning until you're in Northrend, because money drops from the sky like rain out there. Between quests, their un-needed rewards that you can sell for upwards of 15g a piece, and the bonuses from doing random dungeons, you won't really need the gathering professions to earn your keep. Heck, doing the Sons of Hodir faction quest-line can earn you almost 1k and it only takes about a day to get through (less if you already have Artisan flying.)

So if you really want to work on engineering, figure out specifically why (like, if there's particular pieces you want to have that you can't get better from drops, or bonuses just from leveling the skill up so high), and then wait till you're lvl 70+ to start working on them. That way, if you need to farm for stuff, you can do so quickly and easily with an epic land mount (not to mention, not being bugged by nearby mobs), and you can easily afford the supplemental mats.

The best way to make money is to go ahead and level up. As you do so, quest rewards and vendor trash start to bring in gold instead of silver. Don't forget to pay attention to mobs you can farm for things like eggs, clams and pearls.

For the rogue, I'm going to go against the usual trend and suggest that you drop skinning for herbalism. Low level herbs may or may not be a money maker on your server, but Lifeblood is a handy HoT. True, you can't use both trackers at the same time, but they spawn in different environments. OK, there are ghost mushrooms in caves and ore nodes in lakes, but those are exceptions. Add-ons will record where you've gathered herbs/ore in the past and that further reduces the need for a tracker. When in doubt, use the herb tracker -- bruiseweed is sneakier than that glittering, gnome sized ore node. Note -- be careful about getting confused. If you're on a PVP server, attempting to mine gnomes may offer a degree of satisfaction, but since they cannot be smelted or skinned it is seldom profitable.

Consider pushing an existing toon up the food chain in preparation for Cataclysm. Even with all the reports from Beta, the new expansion is bound to shake things up on your server in ways that may be difficult to anticipate and you're going to want to start new toons anyway.

Getting to 1000 gold may not be as impossible as you might imagine. If possible, stay away from buying gear from the AH as much as you can but check there often for the occasional bargain.

Herbalism and mining will provide a steady income. It's possible to do circuits of Elwynn Forest once you get a regular mount in under 30 minutes that will net you 2 full stacks of copper which can be turned into copper bars.

On my server that translates to a steady 25-40 gold a day. It's not really interesting to do that day after day but keep the goal in mind and it will help. The herbs you pick will supplement that and can be pretty profitable on their own once you get into herbs like bruiseweed, mage royal and higher.

So it's possible. Just requires patience and a scheme for leveling that doesn't have you in instances all the time, i.e. questing.

And come the Cataclysm, you'll be able to see both ore nodes and herbs on the minimap at once.

The advice is pretty straight-forward.

1. Replace skinning with herbalism, as stated above. Server's economies vary but typically low level herbalism make much, much more gold than skinning. It's simple: you only use skins for Leatherworking which doesn't give great gear at the beginning. Herbalism on the other hand provides materials for glyphs that are in constant demand( even those made from starting herbs). There are addons that change tracking every half a second or so, so you can make money from both herbalism and mining simultaneously.

2. Gold rewards from quests increase with levels. The same goes for money for vendoring gear. As you level up try not to buy anything on AH, it's huge gold sink.

You've gotten some great advice. Trust me, getting 1000g isn't hard at all if you start to earn a bit of money each day and are consistent. Also check out our Tradeskills forum for more money making ideas.

As far as Engineering goes, I love it. This weekend I am leveling my 4th engineer. I have 3 others at 450. My advice to you though is that you get a firm handle on making money as you level first. Once you have learned to make money, leveling a crafting profession as a higher level can be done in a couple of days easy.

For example, I'm leveling my dk. I ran over and took skinning to go with my disenchanting on that character. I spent a day running around leveling my skinning up to get it up to the level where I can use it while questing. Then I happily skinned and disenchanted as I leveled. Once I got higher and decided to do engineering on him, I simply dropped skinning to take it. I know I can power level engineering in a couple days with around 6k gold. Since I learned to make money first, that isn't a problem.

You will be frustrated with engineering if you don't have the cash, or aren't willing to use other gathering professions on alts over a long period of time to get the mats. Professions that produce raw materials for engineering include mining (metal bars), skinning (various leathers), and jewelcrafting (prospecting raw gems from ore).

Good luck to you. If you focus a bit on gathering, I see that 1000g in your future, perhaps sooner than you think.

Also, don't know if this helps or not, but Blizz has stated that in Cataclysm they want to lower the level requirement and cost for dual spec. Currently in the beta, dual spec is only 100g. As a dps class, dual spec is a little less important, but if you wish to pvp it can be useful.

I would personally suggest holding off on engineering until you hit 80 as a way to help save money. If you really want to level engineering, it might also be a good idea to check out a leveling guide for it such as from Wow-Professions, that way you know how much of each ore you will need and keep that, sell the rest.

Old news. Someone decided to bump an old thread so they could post a link.

I think I'll pass on clicking a link to that Libyan domain.

Edit: Post is gone now.
