New Launcher for BetaFollow

#1 Aug 05 2010 at 1:20 AM Rating: Good
Blizz is working on developing a new launcher. Basically the difference is that you will be able to play the game without the new features once you get about 10% of the download complete.

Here's an FAQ blue post about it:
Quote:
Below you will find the answers to common questions about the new Launcher being added this week. For more information and discussion, please review this announcement: https://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=26262801168&sid=2000

Q. How much data is in each stage for a full Cataclysm installation?
A. In general, about 5% of the data is red (required), about 70% of the data is yellow (base gameplay), and about 25% of the data is green (extended data).

Q. How is data assigned to each stage?
A. Data is assigned to each stage based on the relative need for that data. Red is required to get into the game, yellow is data needed for base gameplay, and green is for variants of base game data (higher-resolution graphics, alternate sounds, other flavor data).

Q. How do I know when the entire game is downloaded?
A. The progress bar will reach 100%, and then will not be shown on subsequent launches (until there is a new patch released).

Q. Will I still be able to download patches from mirror sites?
A. Yes, standalone patches will still work.

Q. Will the downloader still use P2P / bittorrent?
A. Yes.

Q. Will large patches still be downloadable in advance through the background downloader?
A. Yes.

Q. Will it be possible to download the entire game before I begin playing it?
A. Yes.

Q. Is this mandatory?
A. No. Users will have the option of playing before all game data is downloaded and applied. They may choose to enter the game, or they may choose to wait.

Q. On patch days, will I be able to start the patch download before the realms are back up?
A. Yes.

Q. You are requiring a reinstall of the beta client. Does this mean I will have to reinstall my WoW retail client when I buy Cataclysm?
A. No. As with the prior two expansions, there will be a lengthy patching process to migrate users from the prior major version (3.0) to the new major version (4.0). Data for this patch will be downloaded in advance via the background downloader.

Q. Will I still be able to download a patch once and copy it to multiple machines?
A. Yes, as long as you have fully downloaded the entire patch. However, as with the prior expansions, patches from a previous major version (all patches prior to 4.0) will not work with the new major version.

Q. What if I have a low bandwidth connection?
A. After the initial beta release, users with connections below 1 MB/sec will be required to download all data before entering the game. Users with connections above 1 MB/sec will have the option of entering the game before all data has been downloaded and applied. Users at any bandwidth may exit the game and resume the download if they find the play experience undesirable.

Q. How will this affect new characters logging in for the first time?
A. If a player chooses to enter the game while content is still downloading, data for the introductory race video and zone fly-through will be applied at the loading screen to ensure a smooth game introduction. This is currently only functional for new worgen characters. Other races have not yet been optimized, which may lead to issues with the opening fly-through if they are loaded while content is still being downloaded.

Interesting, though odd - I reckon you'd need a pretty good PC to play WoW smoothly while installing half the game.

Still, far from impossible though, so overall I guess it's a decent move.

Can someone tell me what the grand plan behind this is? Being able to launch the game before it's playable sounds fantastic. Smiley: rolleyes

Eh, it's a little laggy right now, with me having downloaded about 30% of the game, but it's not too bad and I have a three year old laptop. Smiley: tongue I would imagine it has more to do with your internet connection than your pc, but it could be a combination of both. Also, we all had to uninstall the game and redownload it to be able to use the new launcher, which is why it's taking so long. Most patches aren't even one GB in size, so I think it's a pretty cool new feature if they decide to implement it. I don't know for sure, but I figure they're just trying to make it easier and less frustrating for people to patch the game.

Not a horrible idea to be honest, as long as your network connection can hold up. I would imagine that it depends on what/how far away it is installing things while it goes and how much it lags your PC. I believe Guild Wars used to do this when they had a new patch, you'd hit a certain point where you can login and it did background downloading while playing.

It's pretty decent. Taking a portal can cause a longer wait, and once I took a portal and had to kill the game an restart it to get out, but overall it was good.

they've been doing this a while with the trial as they can control where people are by knowing the race obviously, I guess they wanted to expand it to everything.

I rarely have much to download on patch day thanks to the background downloader, but it is nice that in the future I'll never have to wait, as the background downloader should always get you to the point where you can log in.

I turned on a torrent for a bit and as I expected this is a pretty bad idea. Torrents will slow down wow without the downloading, so I wasn't really surprised.

I think the real reason they did it is because WoW has grown. A lot. New players need to wait quite a while to get into the game. I was using the new launcher to download last night (started it before going to sleep) and it took over 8 hours. I'm not sure at what point I was able to play, but anything is a boon at that point.

I imagine I was actually downloading the whole game, but I never looked at the file size. Either way, if it can get new players into the game in 4 hours rather than 8, it's going to give them a better experience and increase the chances of them staying. I don't think it's so much for patch days, since those are usually pretty fast as it is--it's for people downloading the client from Blizzard.

Meh, if you're a new player and decide to download the client for a six-year-old game with two (three with Cataclysm) expansions, you're probably also expecting a somewhat large download.

That's why I just install via disks. Much faster and no "You seem to be behind a firewall" idiocy.

Yeah, we're downloading the whole game again, the total size was about 15 GB. I started last night around 11:30 or so, and I'm at 58% with 6.4 GB left. If the new launcher didn't allow us to go into the game early, I'd be pretty irked at this point.

Luckily, I worked the night shift last night and the morning/day shift today, so I wasn't going to be playing between then and now anyway. :P

Well good luck Digg, the world server has been having issues all day. I've been trying to finish up Tanaris, but I keep getting booted every ten minutes or so.

I have a question for you other beta testers...

Since the new launcher...uhh... launched... have you been experiencing any kind of terrain load times when you log on with any character?

My launcher is showing 100%, and green, but under it it still says I have 4.4GB (or something) left to go.... and when I log on with any character I am standing in the middle of nowehere and all I can see are doodads (flower pots, chairs, etc) until 5-10sec later when the buildings and the rest of the world loads in.

If you aren't seeing this... have you heard of this problem? I have been trying to keep an eye out for a blue response, but I don't get to the beta boards that much.

Yeah, it seems to want to keep "streaming" content even after it's all been streamed.

Yeah, even though I'm at 100% terrain still takes forever to load. I've heard of other people having the 100% but still need 4.1 GB to download, but I don't have that issue.

There is a fix to the 4.1gig download problem. What I did was renamed my WTF folder to _WTF. It loads correctly then. I also get that nasty log into game and stand around for a while till everything loads properly. But I am going to have to download the beta... again... due to getting an access violation on damn near every character now. Going to wait till Thursday's maintenance to see if they want us to download the beta again though. Would hate to download it, get it working right, then have to download it again the next day. :l
