People were mainly suggesting that 10-15 were set aside for "long time zam posters". That would still leave 35-40 keys for the newer posts. I don't think you understood that they were saying those could have been completely random people. It shouldn't have been the same guidelines/rule, but there just should have been a few keys for people that frequent the site on a regular basis.
All of our suggestions are irrelevant, because that's not how the contest was held. However, most of us think it would have been nice to see people that we know would report back to the site with information about Cataclysm.
No, I get what they were saying. But even still, you run into the same issues as making the entire contest based on who would be likely to contribute. The 10-15 people would always be suspect for the whole mod favoritism thing.
And even if they did set aside a number of keys for the contest - ignoring for argument's sake the mod favoritism and negative publicity issues - then what mod is there that knows the community well enough to know who would contribute or not? Would they have to go back and check the posters' entire histories and thoroughly research the candidates? Would they have to tell them that contributing is a condition for receiving a key? And how would they select the posters? Who would be more likely to contribute? Would they pick Gurus only?
Premium Gurus only? Sages with an average rating above a certain level? Randomly among the "best" posters? Those with a high post count?
It opens a can of worms that no human wants to deal with. On top of it, the keys are just as likely to be squandered on posters who won't use it/don't care enough about posting as they are to be given to people who
would contribute. I maintain my stance that 100% random was the only fair way.
I still hate it, but view it as the lesser of the evils.
Edit: hur dur, I've been using the internet for how long? And I still can't get formatting right? Damn.
