See, I actually liked this trailer even MORE than the other two.
Think about it, why did the other two NEED to showcase non-plot classes and races?
Well, for the first one, they had to sell the game to every person who saw it before buying the game. They needed people to see that Tauren with the giant log beating up the bear. They needed to get people excited by a scantily-clad Night Elf shape shifting into a leapord.
Imagine you have been a big fan of the WC games since the beginning. When you hear that the next one is a MMO and not a RTS like the previous ones were, you get a little apprehensive and buy the game (with or without seeing the trailer).
However, the first thing you see after installation is a trailer full of your favorite races and beasts duking it out. Yeah, you're excited.
(Note, the original game didn't need a direct plotline. It was an extension of the Alliance V. Horde story).
The second trailer was a mixture of story-line and game-play. As this was an expansion, it is generally less of a selling point to a new player (but it will be seen by non-players). This trailer was meant to showcase Outland and the two new races, and introduce the new main plot arc, Illidan. They did bring back some of the less relevent imagery just to tickle some players and showcase other aspects of the game.
Now, we are at the 2nd expansion and 3rd introduction. Everyone and their mother knows about WoW, and half those mothers play it. They don't need to get NEW players involved (at this point, it has such a name that they wiggle their pinky and get 11 new subscriptions). What they want is to keep the old players interested and get those that have quit back in the game.
So how can they showcase the three big developments in a way that is enticing to the player that has left or is getting bored? They need Northrend. They need Arthas and his legions. They need the Death Knight.
Done, done and done. Arthas (the Lich King, but Death Knight none-the-less) does some fancy shenanigans with his sword, releasing a giant undead Frost Wyrm that inspires his giant undead army stationed in the frozen valley below. They then threw in his father's monologue for some emotional connection.
I haven't been able to play for the past 2-3 months (this area has had a lot of construction lately and the internet goes out 3-4 times a day, convienently right when I have time to log on). I have finally (mostly) beaten the addiction. A trailer of an Orc smashing things wouldn't bring me back at this point. But, you know what would? That stupid f***ing trailer I just watched...
I will be playing again soon. /sigh
