Zone of the Week: Hellfire PeninsulaFollow

This week's zone is the first of the upper level zones in the expansion -- Hellfire Peninsula. I wanted to do the Blood Elf starting areas, but I don't have the maps for them yet! (I just finished the zone on a new character, so I should have Eversong Woods up soon.)

In any event, I'd like you to make any comments, commentaries, questions, etc. that you can think of regarding the zone - in this case Hellfire Peninsula - that you can think of. There are a few reasons I want to do this:

1) It gives you a forum to discuss the zones. Of course, after the week is over, there will always be the usual "forums" for each zone by going to Basic Info -> Zone..., but this is perhaps more visible and present to the forum-going populace.

2) It gives me a chance to ask everyone on the site, "Is there anything wrong with any aspect of the zone, regarding maps or quests or anything else?" You are, of course, welcome to comment on simply how the zone is wrong from a player's perspective, but don't derail the thread grossly with rants because...

3) It creates the potential to make a guide for the zone. A long time ago I did a questing guide for a couple zones, and some of the other site users have as well, but it's always hard to do completely on your own without feedback from others.

I'd especially like you all to consider that second reason, and check out the quests, etc. in the zone. But feel free to offer up whatever you have to say about Hellfire Peninsula in this thread.

Oh yeah, and here's the map of the zone for reference. Connections are Blasted Lands through the Dark Portal, and Zangarmarsh and Terokkar Forest to the west. The yellow-text areas are reachable by flight only.

Hmm. I don't remember visiting Void Ridge or Spinebreaker (anything). Is there anything there of note?

Not sure for alliance, however I know for Horde there is a quest to go kill some mobs there. I forget the quest name though, but it was like a 3 or 4 chain quest, with the start in Spinebreaker Post and first kills in the Warp Field

a rare, silver-elite ground worm mob (name escapes me) sometimes travels in, around, and between the three pvp points. hes listed as level 62, but hes NOT soloable by a level 62. he hits HARD. i took him down with 4 at 70, and it was something of a close run thing because he caught two of us off guard and almost downed us both.

just an fyi to any lowbies doing pvp there who think they can take that worm. this was as of two weeks ago btw.

Those worms are ALWAYS nasty, and blizzard has decided to make most rare spawn mobs both rare spawn and elite at the same time. So, now they have the silver dragon, but also have the hp and damage of a normal elite mob.

Yes, but they also drop blues instead of greens, so I guess it balances out...

This is one of those zones where I keep coming to a screeching stop, pressing alt-z and taking a screen shot. I sometimes have to restrain myself from doing that in the middle of a fight, especially when I'm in a group.

It's one of those zones that reminds you that you can have breathtaking natural beauty out there in the real world, without a plant in sight.

upon reading that, 1 country came to mind, immediately: Tibet.
been there this summer, and even though there were hardly any plants at a lot of places, it is most likely the most beautiful countrie i have ever, and will ever be.

In terms of mining, around and behind, yes, behind the portal on the Stairs is usually an excellent place to gather materials, as well as herbs. Additionally, Sky Fall Ridge's mountain walls are often lines with mineral deposits.

Alliance usually overlook the quests they can get from the NPC at the mine that is just next to Thrallmar.

it's very helpful that you marked out all the sub-zones. you could mention that kazzak lives up in the throne area.

about the elites: yes, they need groups now and drop boe blues. but some of them are complete and utter rubbish. we killed a rare in se shadowmoon. but the item he dropped was so bad, i don't think it can be sold.

Great map! Now why the hell is this posted weeks after we all went through the zone? Right now we all know it by heart...
What I would need now is Netherstorm...

As I haven't quite made it to Outland yet, I would like to know a basic outline of the place, things like, what mobs do you kill what loot do you get, any intersting quests to be done. Things that will give me (and others) more incentive to get there as fast as possible. I realise all this can be found out through your search facility, but I think it would be nice to be all be put together so I can just read through it and go "WOW"!!

Thanks

At least for the horde, the questing is setup almost like a starting area. It starts out in close vicinity to the base and gives pretty concise directions to everything. If you've made it this far, you won't have any problems.

Just run for your life when your hear/feel the Fel Reaver.

I am not overly fond of this area. The skinning is not bad for knothide, there are plenty of boars. But the layout seems a little disjointed and I am not crazy about the quests. And I really dislike that blasted fel reaver, the obnoxious sound he makes (and by then it is usually too late) and why is it that I always seem to be facing the other direction when he comes along. You would think as big as he is, you could feel the ground shake and hear him walking up from a mile away. end of rant.

not EVERYONE was a 60 when BC came out, so the map is good for people who are new to Outland

from alliance stand point all quest start in honor hold. there you will find some npc's that increase your trade skills and give quest for reputation and xp

Hya, Just wanted say the bombing run quests from the eastern guard post or w/e its called were a lot of fun, wish it was repeatable. Thrallmar fame weeeeee

How about checking out this thread? It's all about the expansion.

The level range on the Map lists 59-63. However you can go to the outlands at level 58 and there are mobs as low as 53. So I think the level range should be changed.

I found HFP just "okay" as a zone. The landscape seemed like an extended version of the Blasted Lands, which is what I suppose it is supposed to be like, but struck me as pretty monotonous and annoying. There are a good number of quests, however, with good exp for a level or two. I much prefer other Outland zones, however, such as Zangarmarsh and Terrokar.

I love the Fel Reaver. It certainly gives you plenty of warning (unlike the dinos in Un'Goro) and a reminder that this place is dangerous.

The roads and passages are dangerous, too. I found myself using in-zone flight paths a lot, just to skip unnecessary battles.

2) It gives me a chance to ask everyone on the site, "Is there anything wrong with any aspect of the zone, regarding maps or quests or anything else?"

Some of the quest rewards here are better than anything else you'll encounter on your way to L70 (e.g. Shadowcast Tunic). In fact, there seems to be little regard for item advancement in the Outland quests.

The Hellfire quests tend to be a lot of fun.

It is repeatable. You don't get anything for doing it over, but you can do it as many times as you'd like.

The quest Cruel's Intentions usually has a line forming to complete. Again, the reward is one that you're not likely to replace on your way to L70.

Nice concept, just with it was higher quality.

I hated Hellfire initially, only because I was there at BC launch with everyone else, farming the same quests, with all the lag associated. It's not so bad now.

On the sidebar, click Basic Information by Zone, and choose the zone you want. They all have maps with the exception of Shadowmoon Valley and the two Blood Elf zones, which are works in progress.

This is the map for Netherstorm.

ithurs: what exactly do you want higher quality? The map? The zone of the week? If you meant, the zone of the week, what would you suggest? I'm really hoping people will take a hard look at the zone overall on the site and check quests and report back if they spot something amiss, etc., but it's hard to convince someone to stop and review a bunch of old quest chains.

And yeah, I would definitely write a lot more on the zone itself if I had time. I'd love to do a guide to questing in each zone, but that's a lot of work, and often requires two guides to be written (for Horde and Alliance.)

Every map I see online, they never have the Throne to the north revealed (which can only be opened with a flying mount). I find that quite odd.
