No spellcaster in WoW can use ranged weapons except for wands sadly but I guess you'd like Hunter since with appropriate character builds they can do somewhat decent melee damage as well.

For a general overlook: WoW Classes

Not every hunter is dependent on their pets, there are different character builds you can go with to suit the game style you want to play. And the new changes for talent trees of hunters seems really decent to me. (I don't have much experience with hunters since the only hunter I played is level 45). Someone more experienced can help you on this and you may want to check Hunter Class forums.

From 1-60, you will be dependent on your pet with a Hunter, but from then on it varies.

In Raids, a pet is mostly just additional DpS and not overly important, but you do have to make sure to keep them on a short leash, so they do not gain aggro and wipe the raid.

In PvP, your build dictates your play style. It is very unlikely that you will ever not have your pet out, but a Marksman is going to concentrate on it much less than a Beastmaster.

Sounds to me you want a hunter.
Swords, guns/bows.

Honestly for a first time player you cant go wrong. They are a great learning class. You will find when you hit 60 you may want to make another class but at least then you know the ropes.

You want a hunriorage. Unfortunately, that class doesn't exist except for the Dwgnumanelf race, which is very rare ( you have to get the special login code from Blizz).

I have a L60 hunter (Azelian on Moonrunner) I played a warrior up to L25 I couldn't understand a thing about tanking and that stuff, so I decided I'd start a different class, I chose hunter it was pretty fun at the starting levels got a little repetetive at higher levels but I got back into the fun of a hunter once I got a mount and starting doing AV etc. I'd say a good learning class and very easy to get into, I do best in ranged DPS (obvious) but I'm sped'd in survival so i've got some talents that help with overall DPS which makes melee DPS pretty good, so if you want a class that uses bows, and swords and does good DPS too I'd go wth hunter

hunters are a fun class to lvl with but they're really not important in raids. basically, they're generic. they can't do more ranged dps than a mage, can't take like a warrior, can't heal like a priest, and don't do more melee dps than a rogue so if people can get those classes in their groups then they usually get those. heck, i've even been kept out of a group because of a warlock who was going to summon some of the members there. hunters are only good if we hit crits very often, otherwise there's no point really. i'm a hunter and i will never role a hunter-like character again unless they are very useful. but they're great for beginning players :) lol

if i were you, i'd make more than one character. you can play on one while the other(s) builds up rest xp (if you log out in an inn or capital city then they can go up to 150% of a total level with double xp, which means when you play on them they'll earn double xp until they run out of rest.) and then play on the other one(s). some people say you won't have enough money to support 'em all but it's the other way around, if you get different professions with each one then you'll have lots of money, especially if you like one better than the other(s) and decide to make that one your main then he'll have the best gear and such. hunters use the guns/bow (they also use melee too while they're leveling) and mages have the casting dps without heals and of course rogue and warrior have different playstyles than the previous two mentioned.

Hunters are fun to play. But end game raids don't need hunters too much.

Good thing there is PVP. The BGs really open up to a good hunter. Or any good player for that matter.

I have a hunter and I love to play on it. But I swear every 1 out of 3 PCs I see is a hunter. I mean hunters are by far the most used class. Heck my hunter doesnt even know the meaning of the word "parties". Not only are hunters not needed for raids but theirs so many of them, even if a group did need one your chance to actually be that hunter is like 33%. So then divide that by the 3 other big distance damagers (balance druid, mage, warlocks) and your left with 11%. Odds are so not nice.... Luckily I made my hunter for solo-ing. And it is by far the funnest solo-er I have.

What about a worager of the Dwelf race?

But in all seriousness, go with a hunter. It has 2 of the 3 things you want most out of a class (Even though you wont be using your sword very often, unless you specc survivability).
