Good recording program for vids?Follow

Hey gang, I am in need of a suggestion or three...

Currently, to record anything I do in WoW for later silly vid-ness, I use Fraps. But I've seen better quality out there then what I'm getting on my vids. I can't see the text from a /say in my vids. But I've seen it elsewhere.

Is there a better program out there?

Thanks for any input.

Edit: For spelling cause I'm a dunce.

The problem is most likely not Fraps (since other users produce HQ vids with it) but rather your settings. My suggestion would be to look into optimizing your settings (resolution vs recording resolution, quality, etc).

I use fraps as well. I know with video editing software I can cut the file size down considerably... but for 1minute of video its massive ;-; I should probably check out my settings but thats all I use also. I'm gonna keep watching this thread for some hopeful good leads to new video cap software :D

Seems like once again, the person who dislikes low-postcount sages rated the OP down just because he's got 82 posts. Remember kids, postcount =/= quality.

Edit: Rated Phelyx back up to combat the unwarranted ratedown.

Crap- second edit: I don't know about better, but I use Game Cam. FRAPS uses PayPal, but Bermuda isn't on PayPal's "approved countries" list. Thus, Game Cam was a reasonable alternative.

While I'm not the first person to go off-topic on karma issues...
Is it just me feeling that all sage+ posters are just automatically rated up by people, the moment they post whatever they post, or is it just that the system gives out an initial marking of above decent?

Back on topic: I've done some "not so bad" frapsing done a while back, not much worse than some of the video's you can call professional and it's mostly the post factum editing that counts there. I think one of the tricks might be that they record full screen and then downsize and recompress, but it's a wild guess.

On the other part - my fraps recorded everything I had on screen. Can't vouch for the mouse pointer though. Don't know how it could work selectively.

It's an average karma system. My average karma is higher, so when I post, it's automatically set to "Good" when I post. That doesn't mean my post is necessarily good- just that the average calibre of my posts is supposed to be good, if you will. It's the same for all posters, which is why some people's posts automatically start at Default, and the majority are either Decent or Good.

Basically, if you get a lot of rate -ups or -downs over the course of your posting lifetime, it affects your overall karma, and the rating of any posts you make.

Rated Shadowstray up for the unwarranted ratedown.

Would the ****** who keeps rating down people without actually reading their posts through please get a grip or PM me with an explanation?

Ps. Shadowstray, you can turn your mouse cursor on and off with Fraps.

OT : Gee, I didn't even know I got a rate down. That's... bizarre. When you sign up for a subscription, can you tell who does what rating? Thanks for the rate ^.^

On Topic: I will try Game Cam just to see if it has slightly more options than Fraps. As for Fraps, I did notice that I was recording at half screen so maybe if I record at full it will be better. My resolution was 60 (highest I could go) and even without sound, it's a big file. But I'm still new to making vids, so I'll have to experiment.

Thanks for the input! ^.^

if you run the game at more than 1152x864, fraps will downgrade to that resolution while recording. this reduces quality a lot.

it's better to reduce your graphics settings to 1152x864 ingame, then record.

to reduce file size, use sony vegas or virtualdub on the recorded file. if it's still to large, reduce graphics settings ingame to something lower, record, then downsize again.

above version 2.8, fraps can record at up to 2560x1600 but ONLY on a dual core processor machine. this will eliminate the downsizing problem, but i just presumed you don't have 2.8 AND a dual-core.
