PvP or PvEFollow

Hey ppl. Just got a quick question as im bored at work.

Im a bit of a noob at WOW, and am VERY confused with the PvP and PvE situation. I know what they both are, but are the different servers similar? I mean, do u start from Level 1 on a PvP server, and how do you level up? Also, cant you have Horde/Alliance battles on a PvE server?

For all intents and purposes everything is the same. The only difference is on a pvp server after approximately level 20 the places you will need to go you can be attacked by enemies of the opposing faction.

PvP Server - You level up the exact same way you level on a PvE server. Grinding mobs, Instance runs, quests, ect ect but now you able to be openly attacked by the Opposite faction (after level 20ish)

This next part is taken from the Worldofwarcraft.com website

Quote:

Pros -
-Your fighting skills against other players will be recognized both by your companions and your enemies.
-You will have an easier time finding opportunities to fight other players.

Cons -
-It is harder to fight monsters and to complete some quests in contested territories. The game can be a little more difficult on a Player vs. Player realm because you need to worry about the other faction's players.
-If you want some safety from other players you will have to do more private (instanced) dungeons.
-Sentence to remember: On a Player vs. Player realm, I may be attacked by other players everywhere at any time, except in friendly (green) territories and in dungeons (instances).

I have always played on PvP servers. I find them more interesting, though sometimes frustrating because an enemy player can ruin your day if you are trying to get somewhere. ;)

You cannot transfer from PvE to PvP. Though can go from PvP to PvE, you can't go back though.

If you are looking to join an old realm, do some research on their forum to find out if they are overpopulated in either Alliance or Horde. If that's the case, you probably don't want to go there. Pick a server that is roughly even split.

A realm may not be an eligible destination for a variety of reasons, including:

* The realm is full or densely populated at this time.
* It has been fewer than 180 days since the realm was launched
* You are attempting to transfer from a PvE (normal) realm to a PvP realm. Characters currently located on PvE realms are only eligible to move to other PvE realms.
* There might be an upcoming free character migration to or from this realm.

I prefer PvP realms not because I gank people but because it's more fun. Strange point I know but I like Mind Controling+Buffing Hordies. Or somehow interacting with them. And hell if they want to kill me, let them do so.

EDIT: Yet again, spelling.

I have Two 60 chars on a PvE server and I have Instance fun with them but I really love my PvP char most (49 Hunter Garathos).

Just being able to go out in WoW and grind for some Gold but knowing that you can be attacked at any time or you can generaly find the Opposite Faction and attack them at any time is great fun to me.

I will still play my PvE chars but at the moment I would say my PvP player gets 85% of my WoW play time and 15% to my PvE players.

You don't have to PvP all the time on a PvP realm :) Any class is playable on PvP realms. See I did my STV quests around 4 am each morning while levelling my priest and I did fine (yes I know I'm a miserable gal but being a holy priest in a jungle is.. bad).

In PvE realms in order to attack opposite faction you should have your PvP enabled and the person you want to attack should also have his PvP enabled. (/pvp command, flags and unflags you for PvP) In PvP realms this is automatically flagged when you enter a contested area around late 10s, early 20s. If you attack a PvP flagged person when you're not flagged, attacking also automatically flags you.

I’m just the opposite. I loath PvP with a passion. If I’m having fun with quest X I don’t enjoy being attacked by other players. In my opinion, PvP servers are just an excuse for people to act like jerks to each other. I get enough of that in real life. I feel no need to experience even more of it in my chosen form of entertainment. I’m not saying that everyone who plays on a PvP server is a jerk. But it only takes encountering one to ruin my day. Why, in the name of all the gods, would I pay to allow someone to do that to me? It’s beyond my meager comprehension.

I’m fully aware that whether or not one enjoys playing on a PvP server is simply a mater of personality. If you enjoy taking grief and dishing it out then by all means play on a PvP server. I’m just very happy that Blizzard recognizes that a larger percentage of players can be found on either side of that fence. They give both personality types a fun game to play. I find that a rather amazing feat in and of itself.

I use to hate the idea of PvP but I gave it a try and found out something, I'm a jerk and I love being one. Nothing like laughing at someone you defeated then dancing on there body it just gives me a warm feeling in my cold black heart.

I prefer PvP because it gives a little more realism. If on a PvE server an alliance and a horde meet up, they might as well not exist for each other. There's no interaction, and both are shielded behind that blue nick.

Doesn't mean in PvP that you have to attack on sight. But just knowing that the interaction is possible changes a lot of things. You're aware that that horde player might attack you at any time, but on the same chance, he might just be calmly looking at the situation.

Just brings a little more into the game.

But yes, of course there are the players that hide themselves only to attack you when you're facing that mob and lost a crapload of health.

My problem with PVE is it removes the tension of "Horde versus Alliance". The Warcraft series has always been about... well... war! While I don't enjoy corpse camping, there is something very exciting about battling for resource nodes or rare monsters; PVP out in the world is very different than in a battleground and far more exciting. Complaining about PVP would be like playing Warcraft and complaining when the other faction attacked your poor peons trying to harvest gold and lumber =P

If you play on PVE... the other faction might as well not exist. They are just unattackable mobs that steal your farming spots :| Things just become stagnant... the possibility that PVP could happen happen anywhere adds a sense of excitement to the game. The PVE encounters are always the same... you level an alt up for the 10th time and the mobs spawn in the same spot at the same time and drop the same loot. But PVP is always different... you never know what your opponent might do or who might be lurking in the bushes =)

Remember you can always transfer to a PVE realm later but you can't go to a PVP realm... so if you get tired of the PVE experience, you're stuck and have to reroll.

OK. Thanks for the feedback all. i think im ganna start again on a PvP server. I think the whole attacking thing is a little bit more exciting. The PVP battle side seems a little to formal, a bit like the GUILD WARS game, which i did buy, but seemed to be a complete copy of WOW. (in some sense).

Even thouh its going to be soooo boring...im sure that il be able to get to about lvl 14 ish in a good few hours, and all day tomorrow..well...i have no idea :)

Im considering a rogue. I use them in PvE. but obv when fighting another WOW player its going to be a bit diff. If any lvl 60's wanna meet me up on a server and help me lvl up thats fine! :)

Honestly tho, how long, and DONT GIVE ME LINKS TO THESE CRAP POWER LEVELING GUIDES THAT DONT WORK, take to get up to lvl 50+? And if you wanna throw a few ideas at the character i should pick feel fee. Im not a total NOOB but any and all help is good!

I understand where you’re coming from. And I know a lot of people feel the same way. But by nature I don’t like conflict. If WoW was only presented as a RPG war game of alliance vs. horde I wouldn’t be playing it. So while I agree that two members of the opposite faction not having the option to force one another into battle is not very “realistic” given the politics of the world, that restriction is what makes the game fun for me. I don’t like games like Risk for the same reason. I guess I just want everyone to get along. *smiles* Well, this is a fantasy world.

I’m not against PvP. Honest. It’s just not fun for me. While you find the tension exciting, I find it a complete turn off. That might explain why I never played the original Warcraft games. I have played a couple of games where the goal is to build up your resources before the other side built up theirs and attacked you. But the only way I played them was in god mode where I stuck them on a tiny island in a corner while I went about happily building cities. That’s what I found fun. I didn’t enjoy attacking the “enemy” or having them attack me. *shrugs*

I think you’ll have a good time. Though WoW is not perfect it is the most stable and best put together MMORPG I’ve ever played. Once you decide on a class, you may want to do a bit of research on spending talent points. Most classes play very differently depending on which talent tree you spend your points in.
