"Officer meeting planner" addon ideea pls helpFollow

#1 Dec 19 2006 at 10:28 PM Rating: Decent
Well, it's pretty simple.

I was an officer in a guild some time ago and when we were meeting all the officers to talk all the things about the guild we had no discussion plan and things were getting concentrated on a few more or less simportant things and many of the things were left behind. This was getting us some headaches as that guild really had some problems(imo[gm being veeeery slow in taking decisions]).

So I came with the ideea of an addon to fix this problem. I would have made the addon myself, but I didn't do any :P
The addon should be made of 2 parts(windows)
A calendar where the officers can decide when they want to make their meetings(councils)
And the most important, a page with a list of things to be discussed. It should have a few sets of premade things that can be discussed. Now each gm should be able to edit the list(or make a new one) and maybe some officer ranks also. It should also have a place where you can tick the things that the guild has discussed during the council.
Things to discuss list eq:
1 (v)Guild members
2 (v)Guild rules
3 (v)Guild raids
4 (v)Guild gear
5 (v)Guild bank
6 (v)Guild ...
(v)tick place where you can turns green from red after everyone says that all is ok
Each topic can have subtopics as:1.1 promotion/demote 1.2 trials ...

It's a simple 2 window addon which I think would make a great differece for many guilds. I donno if such an addon exists but if it does pls post:P
I look for more ideeas for this addon as I think I will more likely make it soon:P

:)) no I want to make 1 coz I think it wil help alot...
Some guilds just dont organize themselves and this is a was way to help them(imo)
If you were an officer you might have known the problem when some things just skip or are not discussed. 1 of my 2 guilds didnt go bwl because they coudnt get together and dicuss all the problems(ofc after some time.. disband). Anyone can see this problem?

and btw have you ever used a pen and paper while playing wow? :))
some ppl dont want to hear of that at all they just wanna play and have all on the screen.

You're going about it the hard way. Unless you are a role player, doing the guild work in-game sucks. Players (yes, even officers) have better uses for their time when they are logged on to WoW.

Forums are easy to set up, and there are some services (like EZ-board) that will give you a forum for free, if you like ads. If you are the guild master, make a rule that any officer that hasn't checked the forum for a one-week period (excuses for vacation, etc allowed) will be demoted. Forums are good for long-term issues, since not everyone will be on the forum simultaneously.

IRC Chat is also easy to set up. Have a regular weekly meeting time. If officers can be on time for raids, they should be able to be on time for an IRC chat. For the meeting, have an agenda set up ahead of time. discuss the issues you have, ask for new business, create the next meeting's agenda, and terminate the meeting.

If you have to do anything in-game, set up a chat channel, and do it the same way you'd do it in IRC - but keep meetings short. Even shorter than if you were in IRC.

this addon will be a kind of agenda for the officer meetings, having the dates of the meetings and a list of things to discuss. I think it's pretty clear.. i hope

Use a phpbb forum with phpRaid and eqdkp (wow version) all free, runs on php and mysql which are also free and as good as can be, there are various mods too to implement EQDKP in wow itself for easy export/import.
If youre computer literate its easy to set up, it takes time and reading but the guides and FAQS are good and it takes no rocket scientist.

Ive been officer for 1,5 years of a moderatly successfull guild and i cant think of a reason why i ever want to have something you describe. You have youre recruitment channel and officer channel and the real important stuff you discuss on forums because its 100% impossible (at least for us) to agree on a date where every officer is online at the same time. ("take it to the forums" is a common dropped term in the /o chat)

On phpBB the permissions of anything, including polls, forum subsections, etc, can be user based or user group based, you have complete control of everything.

And you can look up previous decisions and reasons for those decisions, when youre leading a guld with a group of people having that stuff black on white is the only way itll work to avoid the possibly endless "im sure you said this and that back then" discussions and to keep every officer in guild in the loop, forums ftw ;)

I don't know how much it would help, but you could set up something like GroupCalendar for this purpose- just set it up and share the info so only Officers have access. It won't give you tons of space to write full minutes, but you could use it for scheduling and summarised agenda.

1. Wondroustremor, sorry it doesnt. because I am talking only about officer+gm work not about raid planning.
2. Sjans, my guild had a forum and dkp site and all the rest but there were info gaps between the gm, officers, class leaders and sometimes even members.

Either I am explaining very weared or the guild I was in was one of the weardest, but there were times when there always was a class leader or officer that complained about something that needed to be discussed(not to mention the members that were asking for guild bank stuff). My solution is this agenda or however you want to call it, which is a simple 2 window addon where you can
- set the officer meetings
- write "discussion points" for the next officer meeting
- tick them when they are dicussed

Ive been in FFXI linkshell, CS clan and now WoW guild, trust me, business like RL meetings dont work online, ive tried. Epsecially bc the guy doing the minutes doesnt get paid and so misinterprets and/orforgets stuff.
Then you have people who feel strongly about a subject and dont agree at all with the final decision but wasnt on the meeting so you have to start that decision all over again.

No worries- the only reason I suggested it is because it can be manually set up for occasions other than instances and raids (for examples, the guild I was in used it to track birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). Good luck finding one that better suits your needs. Smiley: boozing

One suggestion? Hack one. No, not THAT hack.

Modify an existing one. Or use an existing one as a springboard for ideas on what/how to do something.

At the very least, it'll give you an idea how addons are setup, things are displayed, etc.

GroupCalendar sounds like a good place to start for your efforts on learning something. Take their presentation/communication code and strip the rest and add in what you want it to do.

It' WILL take a good deal of trial and error to do it this way, especially if you're just starting out as a programmer. But if you think it'll help the guild, then it's probably worth the effort.

Edit: As far as tools needed: All you need is a text editor, like Notepad (NOT WordPad). The .LUA files are straight text files.

Ive personally toyed around with http://blua.sourceforge.net/, its in alpha stage but the only one afaik that has an WoW library.
While LUA doesnt come anywhere near to "real" programming, for someone who never saw code it doesnt really matter :P So if you know javascript, is kinda on the same level on complexity and function.
If youre interested download a simple and small mod and see how it works, the few nights you spend on it learning it surely isnt wasted time.
