Lose not Loose... why?Follow

#1 Dec 19 2006 at 8:07 AM Rating: Decent
Just curious as to why I see so many players ingame that use the word loose instead of lose.

Ex. I don't wanna loose this game
We are loosing, just keep the 3 nodes we have.

Could keep going and going. I have seen hundreds of players in battlegrounds, and throughout WoW use the term loose instead of lose.

Am I missing something? I know i'm not missing anything in America, but in other countries maybe they say loose? How did "loose" get in the trend for WoW players?

Typo is excluded, I have had players correct me when i said lose, with "loose*".

I can only laugh, but what exactly made them think it is loose?

Lose opposite of Win
Loose opposite of Tight.

You know it is a common disease called stuttering finger disease.

The symptoms are as you type a letter your finger stutters and his the key more than once, in this case they happen to stutter on the O.

I really don't think it is nice of you for making fun of peoples disabilities.

Dunno for the US servers, but on the EU servers, only a small minority has English as their native language. There are other examples like whiping.

I've had quite some experience with english, but it's far from my native language. Occasionally I'm typing this word and become completely unsure about the spelling. And sometimes I just type a word, thinking I'm writing it down, and then get corrected on it. I learn from it, but it makes me aware my grammar is far from perfect. I think the same can be said for a lot of other people that don't have english as their native language.

Sometimes they are typo's, though. In combat I don't fix my typo's even if I see them before I press enter. I got other stuff to do than fix my grammar. Outside combat, I correct it if I see it in time, but most of the time, I already pressed enter and correct it on the next line.

Understood. I figured some may not know, but I have had people take the time to say, "Look it up, it's loose" correcting me after I say lose. I'm just trying to figure out where i'm supposed to look this up at. I over look the typos, and the folks that are not sure if they are spelling it right. I, get corrected for saying lose, I don't correct them, I just wanna find out the origin.

Ok you missed the whole essence of my post, there is no real stuttering finger disease, I was joking by saying that the people typing loose instead of lose had a dissability and you were picking on them for having said dissability.

But now it's just ruined. I am going back to work, what's the world coming to when I have to actually work while at work, oh the atrocity of it all.

There is a definite difference between lose and loose.

As has been said, some people are lazy, some people have legitimate spelling difficulties (dyslexia, for example), and some people are from a country which does not have English as a primary language.

The second two reasons are excusable. The first, IMO, is not.

I'm one of them, I know it's spelled lose but I keep typing loose. My mates give me grief for it and an hour later I do it again, mild form of dyslexia on my part maybe.

Some people really don't know that the word they are using is wrong.

I spent years on the eBay help boards and I can't begin to count how many people would come to the forums ranting about how they keep "loosing" auctions to "snippers" and want to get some "advise" on how to win. It happens way too often to be just poor typing or laziness.

1. One of two or more words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning, such as bank (embankment) and bank (place where money is kept).

Other common examples are "deer/dear", "there/their/they're", and "loose/lose".

Loose and lose use the same "short o/u" sound, so one possibility is that people are spelling the words phonetically.

Also, the "loose" spelling looks like it would be correct, since the general rule of thumb for the english language is that when a word is in the "vowel-consonant-vowel" form, the first vowel will be a "long vowel" sound. Lose is an exception to the rule, since it looks like it should be pronounced "Lowes".

Blame our failing education system. Kids just don't get beaten with rulers for misspelling a word on the blackboard in front of the whole schoolhouse anymore.

Ah the good old days! Being a bit loose with the language is quite common. But I think people should be forgiving if you can make sense of the meaning, as after all, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that there a children playing. I like to "detect" other expat-brits on the US servers by mixing in a little colour, behaviour and rubbish.

What's hillarious is when a whole sentence is in "text speak" and I feign ignorance, because it is genuinely more bother to read it than it's worth, the idiot on the other end tells me I should learn to communicate. Um no. It's an English server I am on and "cul8r" is not a word. I'm not old enough to have a walking stick to shake, but you can bet I will when I do! If you cannot be bothered to do something properly (such as the essential exercise of one's own language - in the correct manner), don't do it at all.

I think it is interesting that "pwned" has become common usage. It was a mispelling of "owned", but some l33t player used it and everyone now thinks its cool and calls it "pawned." Right.

And "teh" is simply "the" mispelled too (and I do it by accident all the time). But it has become l33t speak along with "meh," whatever that means.

My sons talk l33t in real life and although I have explained that they are illiterate, I tolerate it because eventually it is I who will be considered illiterate when everyone else accepts the new idioms. Language is dynamic, and what we consider correct was once considered erroneous.

And I supose that very few people have a clue that l33t derives from the word elite, meaning a form of speech intended to show superiority. Badder is better.

Meh can be said to either be Me or the whole 'i don't care... meh'

The whole lose/loose thing kills me, that and you're. oh god when people just keep saying 'your an idiot' makes me lose so much respect... I know it is dumb, but one of my biggest pet peeves.

I used to firmly believe that video games don't make you stupid... until I played this game. The spelling I see is just... wow...

The one that really kills me is 'definitely'.

I dunno. I find that I change the way I say the two. When saying "lose", I place the emphasis on the "oo" sound, while when saying "loose" it goes more towards the "s" on the end. Perhaps it's just a regional thing, but I know that I can tell the difference between the two when someone uses them.

Regardless, minor spelling errors get on my nerves all the time. It's probably some form of OCD kicking in out of nowhere, but based on first impressions alone (mainly on forums) I quickly brand someone who makes amateur English mistakes constantly as a person I'd rather avoid.

Everyone's got a peeve to share, so here's mine. ;)
I used to admin a couple of modder forums for an older game. We had many non-native english speakers, so we were very relaxed with spelling, grammar, etc... However when debugging some mods you inevitably would crash your computer. (Blue-screen-of-death or worse.) Somehow it seemed common in many euro countries to say, "My computer crushed". Maded for some funny, frustrating warnings when you'd see, "Don't forget to copy over the graphic .bam file or you'll crush your computer...". Damn! That's some viscous bug!
