Bored to death of EQII - want to come over to WoWFollow

#1 Dec 10 2006 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
Hi guys,

SOE have completely destroyed PvP in EQII so I'm thinking to make the switch to WoW so have some general questions:

Are there any good Euro PvP servers, if not what's a lively US one?
What's a good starter class? Like solo hutning but would be nice to be albe to bring something to groups.

Thanks.

First things first, welcome to the game!

Second, Europeanut, eh? (Edit: You can't play on a US server if you're from Europe*) Join the club. We have an Allakhazam "casual" guild up and running on the European English server Chromaggus. You need to be Horde though.

If that doesn't interest you, you can always look me up on the European English server Zenedar, Alliance side. My characters' names are Mazra, Memitim, Servatus, Sumac and Zalia. I'll be on Memitim and Mazra most of the time though.

About soloing, any class can solo to level 60. A good starter class would be any class of the type you like to play.

Tell us a bit about the class that interests you.

*You can, but it's tricky, not allowed and the timezone difference sucks.

I can't help w/ the Euro stuff.

But as to a starter char, I can say this: the two pet-classes are much easier to start off with. They are much less gear dependent than most other classes. And they make great "farmers," meaning you can use them to help your alt chars' journeys up easier and faster.

Hunter is probably the easiest. Getting from lvl 6 to 10 gets tedious when yer a total newb, so get Mazra to mail you 20 to 50 silver to buy a "green" melee weapon. Green = higher quality than what you start w/ - it's name literally is the color green - and its damage or dps is muuuuch higher. W/ a green ax you can level to 10 much easier.

Okay, at ten you get a pet. And from there on almost every fight is: sic pet, autoshoot. It's not that simple, but... it kind of is.

As to your hunter offering to groups, that's up to you. Hunter players are notorious for being stupid and one-dimensional, playing groups just like they are soloing. (edit, hunters are VERY useful to groups if the hunter is a smart player - read up hunter guides to see how).

Warlock is the other pet class.

You have to quest at lvl 2 or 3 for your first imp pet. He's weak physically but shoots fireballs. To get to lvl 10, I pull target w/ weak DoTs, let imp pull agro w/ his fireball - then do immolate and shadowbolt to pull agro on me. Target splits his damage between the two of you: you and your imp win every time.

At lvl 10 you quest for a voidwalker, a pet which can taunt. You can overdamge and pull agro off it. So just don't be careless and learn to pace.

Drain hunting is a very easy pve tactic: sic vw, cast your two "light" dots (curse of agony and corruption), wait for the vw to taunt another time or two, cast your heavy dot, immolate (does a burst then dot) - then tap self to sacrifice some health for mana - then drain the target to get health back.

You end the fight nearly full mana and health and rush to next fight. No downtime. Vw can quickly heal self after lvl 16 or so.

Locks are probably more useful to groups. They can cast soul stone on a rezzer to gain "wipe insurance" for the grp. Grp wipes. Rezzer clicks the correct button (you hope! hehe - one says soulstone rez, one says release), and he is alive right there where he died (obvi8ously he has to die in a good spot). Then he rezzes grp. You dont' waste all that time running back from the graveyard and fighting through respawns. (edit - also locks can summon people, not into instances, but to the spot right outside instance - very handy - lock can make healthstones for the party, which work like healing potions (and can be used along w/ a heal pot; they don't share the same cooldown timer - see warlock guides for more info on this).

Okay, so why are these classes so darn good for a starting player???

Equipment: they need almost none. A hunter needs a decent gun or bow to pve. A lock only needs whatever rags he loots or wins in quests, for pve. If you get better gear, of course you can level faster and fight harder stuff. But a hunter literally can level to 60 naked, save for a gun and an ammo sack.

Most other classes are, one way or another, gear dependent. I.e. they are just no fun to pve or pvp unless they have darn good-to stellar equipment.

Your best path is probably to level up a pet guy first - let him farm at higher levels to buy great gear for your alts of other classes.

OR - find a friend and trade off instance farming for the alts. his lvl 50+ shepherds your lowbie alt thru instances for nice drops. Then your lvl 50+ shepherds your lowbie alt thru instance for nice drops (many drops are bind on pickup or bop - the alt has to be in the dungeon to get em).

GL! Welcome to wow! (I quit eq2 for wow, too)

I came from EQ II also. You will like this game.

Its popularity is directly releated to its ease of operation.

Well said Iponemagirl, but I have to say that's not the only way to play. Every class can solo effectively and gear isn't too hard to come by if you know where to look.

Choose Warlock, trust me.

I played EQII for the first 2 months it was live, and god almighty it was a piece of crap, but I hear that SoE's changed pretty much every single mechanic that made that game unique since then. Too bad it took me another year and a half to pick up this game.

For anyone who hasn't played EQII PvP since the last pack came out, they now have gods in the game who you can worship for 'miracles'. This basically means even the most unskilled level 40 can easily wipe whole groups or even kill a level 60 with one click of the botton. They also changed all the PvP range limits in the zones to appease the care bears which means there is now litteraly no PvP left in the game.

I think from what you guys have written a Hunter sounds like a good starter toon for PvE but are they any good for PvP? Same question for locs.

Thanks for all the replies by the way :)

Haha, PvP wasn't even implemented before I quit, but that sounds rather funny... What gods though, the old EQ gods are back?

Anyway, Hunters and Locks are generally considered two of the top (if not THE top two) PvP classes right now. Hunters are an excellent choice for a first toon, since they can solo really well (which is 90% of the leveling process in this game), but the class tends to draw a lot of really dumb newbies so you would be faced with some bias there.

Yes, not only the old gods but the new expansion has you adventuring in faydwer 500 years or so later (I think)

I have been thinking of picking up EQ2 (played EQ from beta to PoP), but we'll see. Might be too busy playing burning crusade.
