Solo Play.

In the beginning mages tend to level really slowly due to low mp, low armor etc and really no great or worthwhile spells/talents. Paladins (this is pre20) level extrememly quickly due to a great ability to deal damage and heal with very high armor.

After 20 ish, Mages solo are very able to take down several mobs at once, pop a drink and keep going. After 40 they are gods at AE grinding and could probably level faster than almost any other class. Paladins slow way down with horrible DPS but can survive pretty much anything.

In PvP.

Mages are Very expendable. Jump in, burn MP kill a few things and die - rez with full MP and do it again.

Paladins tend to be very hard to kill and with their quick heals very dangerous, they also have a good amount of blessings to pass around that makes an overall excellent support character

For Raids.

Both are useful and have a place. DPS or support/healing.

Honestly, I feel that if you have to ask, you'll never truly be a mage. A true mage is what he is before ever even installing the game and rolling the class. A true mage has a love for the arcane, a fire that burns deep within his soul, and a frosty gaze that sends chills into the hearts of his enemies.

A true mage does not choose to be a mage. A true mage merely unlocks the door to that which he has been his whole life.

When a true mage rolls the class, a melodious cosmic voice greets him from the vast reaches of the Great Dark Beyond and says "Welcome Home."

/nod
Ive always played wizard in D&D games, and being bad bc i always get comments for memorizing way to little CC, buff, and cleaning spells. (thats what clerics are for! :P)
I just love "unleashing", making things go boom and watch multiple targets drop dead.
And if im caught in the wrong place at the wrong time thinking: Aiai! thats going to leave a mark.
And you have to have a love for bravely running away, and trying to make yourself look uninteresting.

Its one of the more difficult classes to play if you dont want to constantly worry about youre positioning (especially in PvP) take pally instead.

But you could replace mage with dark magician or warlock and it would sound just as good, yet mages and locks hate each other. (maybe leave out the chill and put in a bit of shadow :P)
