Graphic Issues: ATI M9 - Question before hot fix

If you are cruising the WoW Technical forums you will come across this post...

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=52937191&sid=1

Basiclly the issue at hand is;

Quote:
When I first click on WoW Application Icon, I come to the screen to input my password. The background is a red flat image. I input my password and I log into game. I come to the Character selection screen just fine. The background on the character selection screen is fine. When I click on my character I log into game, the whole world looks like it's in a fog. I can only see the shapes of the trees and the trees look like they are in a fog.

Now me and other people also seem to be experiencing this issue and therefore are unable to play WoW. But another player came up with a solution in that thread and I would like your opinion before I proceed.

Owners of Radeon 7000 to 9250 will need to download the following:

If you do NOT have Microsoft .NET installed (either 1.1 or 2.0), you can download this WIndows update or the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

If you already have .NET Framework (1.1 or 2.0) installed, you may skip the above step.

Now, for Desktop -AND- Mobility Radeons, download the 6.11 Catalyst drivers at:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeon-prer300-xp.html

If you are on a Desktop with a standard PCI or AGP card, you simply need to install the above.

If you are on a laptop or otherwise using a Mobility Radeon, you'll need to also download the Mobility Modder tool at:
http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/

It has detailed instructions on how to use this tool. Basically, you extract the standard ATI Catalyst drivers- HALT the install, run this tool to modify the installer for your Mobility chipset then re-run the Catalyst drivers.,

Note- Usage of the Mobility Mod tool is "at your own risk" and if you have difficulties, you may need to rebot in Safe Mode and roll-back your drivers. Setting a Restore Point prior is also a good idea. I've personally used this tool on a number of laptops in the past and it's worked beautifully.

Good luck and hope this help!

Now this seems to be legit but I am not a computer expert and am curious if others have done this thing in the past to get their graphics to work or should I sit and wait for Blizzards mercy to fix it themselves?

I just read a different solution that just worked for me and it might for you.

1. Open the World of Warcraft folder on your hard drive.
2. Open the WTF folder.
3. Open the Config.wtf file using a text editor, like Notepad.
4. Add SET gxApi "opengl"
5. Save the file and start World of Warcraft again.

When I logged in all was restored except I noticed certain Item UI's were missing and when I reset my video options in game it all came back.
