Hello WoW community. I am currently contemplating very very seriously about playing WoW. I originally had no concern as far as computer specs go as I have been playing FFXI for 2 years or so with no hiccups at all in the realm of my machines specs. I really didn't even think about recommended system requirements to play WoW up until today.

After browsing the guides and stickies here looking for info about the game I did come across the guide about performace tweaking and it really got me thinking about my abilities with my comp after reading some of the comments. I'm not entirely dumb to computer tech subjects but I'm not particularly an advanced user or pc builder either. My question is could I run WoW in a reasonable fashion with these specs?

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ 2.2Ghz
RAM: 512 MB
Card: NVidia GeForce FX 5200 256MB RAM

I am a bit concerned now and I direct this question to any current player who may have a similar spec or tech savy enough to shed a bit of light on my plight. God knows it bites when you spend money on a title and your machine spends all its time playing catch-up with lag or single digit frame rates. I appreciate any feedback you guys may have. I do look forward to being a productive part of this community in the near future, given that I can handle the game running on my machine.

Thanks again.

You'll really want to double your ram. Everything else will be tolerable, but 512 megs is just terrible for any recent game.

Thank you Riggy. I'll get the RAM updated then, if thats all that would keep me from playing.

I agree.
CPU and Graphics card are fine, but i'd suggest getting 1gb of RAM.

I agree, i currently have 512 ram, and it makes the game unbearable.

Everything else is higher statwise than what i have by far, and you will be able to run the game, not top speed but surely at a good speed with no problem. After the expansion, no one knows for sure. Im sure my computer will not work anymore, we will see. But your will most likely make it through that.

Just to echo what as ben said here. I hated going into towns when I had 512 ram. Back when I was a noob the Crossroads was raided pretty much 24/7. I couldn't move in there. Ever since I jumped to a gig of ram I don't have any of those issues.

Yep, another 512mb of ram and you should be fine. This game is pretty heavy on the RAM usage more than anything.

Ok. That is the kind of info I was looking for. Similar set-ups and what trouble you may have running the game. I'll keep all this in mind and see what occurs. I'll go ahead and kick up my RAM to 1gig just to be safe. Thanks again.

Another check for adding 512. Thank you for your comment.

You'll get a lot of concurring statements. My first system was only a 933MHz, with a 128 meg vid card and 512 megs of ram. Doubling the ram made the game tolerable til I could get a new box.

For most people with decent machines, a lot of their problems can be solved by either adding more ram or doing a little bit of housekeeping (defragging, anti- spy- & ad- ware, etc.).

In your case, more ram is the solution.

Understood. Well, another stick of 512 is now on my list. I have about a month before I begin play so I've got time to get that issue remedied and study up on game "how-tos" through the stickies and guides. Thank you a ton for your help. I know it can be a bugger when new people pop up with similar questions. I appreciate the tact and character you guys have displayed to me.

I agree with all of the above posts but in addition...

You might want to look at upgrading your video card, 5200 FXs are pretty old now and for a very modest price (100-200 dollars or less) you could get a very significant upgrade. I'm assuming you're using an AGP card, so make sure you get a video card that support AGP, not PCI-Express. For instance, you could get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814141026 and it would be insanely better than the one you are currently using. You could really crank up the effects ingame and make it look a lot prettier.

I gotcha. I've had that card since I begun playing FFXI. Actually bought it because FFXI wouldn't run on an integrated board obviously. I've thought about upgrading but my ultimate plight there is I don't normally play PC games. Thus I'm not very quick to drop another 100 - 200 dollars into a card if it won't get that frequent a use other than an MMO. If I can suitably run WoW or FFXI with my current setup (after a RAM upgrade) then I beileve I'll stick with that. If at any time the tide changes and I look to more PC based games I will definately upgrade the card. Thank you very much for your feedback. Rate Ups to everyone who offered their help. It is much appreciated.

I'm just fine with 512 mb of RAM, so you don't absolutely have to upgrade. The only time I run into any serious lag is when I first walk into a large city(Ironforge, Stormwind, Orgrimmar). But all the graphics options are turned down to low, so that could be why I don't have many performance issues. Although upgrading wouldn't be a bad idea at all...
