Purpose of warrior "slam" abilityFollow

Maybe I'm just missing something...

the warrior's Heroic Striek ability hits on "next melee" for, I believe the current rank I have hits for like weapon damage + 58. "Slam" is a 1.5 second cast that does weapon damage plus 32. Why would one use "slam" over a heroic strike.. why would one use slam at all? It doesn't seem to interrupt casting or anything like a "sheild bash" does.

What is the reason for using a valuable hotbar slot for "Slam".

I am a newb as at playing a warrior, so maybe I am missing something? Under what circumstances would it be a good idea to use "Slam"?

Grand Slam!

Slam Dunk!

I've never use slam. It's on my hotbar but that's only because I still have slots available. Every time I tried it I always thought "what's the point?". It took too long to cast and I've never seen any benefit from it over other abilities. So I guess I'm with you unless someone proves to me it's worth something then I don't see myself using it ever.

If you have a large amount of rage. 1.5 seconds is generally faster than most weapons so you can do a little extra damage. That's the only way I could see using it. I only used it for screenshots. /shurg

It is used as a rage dump for warriors wielding 2 handers. In TBC there is a talent to reduce its casting time by 1 second, and weapon damage every .5 seconds with a 2 hander is quite significant.

Yep. Useless with a one hander.

I find it great when not tanking or off-tanking. for 15 rage I can more than double the speed of my 2-hander, and if you make it a .5 casting time, oh man...that's just wonderful. It isn't much use after that though.

I find it useful in Ony fights. In phase 1 when you're not supposed to be picking up alot of aggro, you can use that rage for slam if you have a slow 2 hander. The damage really adds up after a while..that's the only place I can think I've used it.

Thanks for the input all. Seems like with a talent that brings the cast time down to .5 secs, that'd be nice when wielding a slow 2-hander if you've got rage built up... thx all. I guess all damage is good damage, mostly. :P

Also if you are not tanking for whatever reason Slam is a good alternative (if you are going 2h) to Heroic Strike. Heroic Strike has a higher threat value then Slam.

to get the most out of slam, you need to:

1) have a swing timer mod
2) not be taking damage (during the cast ^^)
3) have 50+ rage
4) have ww AND ms (or bt i suppose) on cooldown
5) cast slam immediately after an autoswing lands, because slam resets the swing timer

squeezing slam between autoattacks whenever ms and ww are on cooldown will keep your rage under 80 and will bump you up quite a few notches on the dps charts.

with the tbc talents, the new slam will be like a mini-mortal strike, without the debuff; damn near a second instant attack.

as for slam vs heroic: (at level 60)

heroic strike - costs 30+ rage for 157 damage
slam - costs 15 rage for weap dmg + 82

heroics add 157 damage to your next autoattack (which would have happened anyway,) eliminating any rage that attack would have given; that's why they really cost 30+ rage

slams cost 15 rage, but resets your swing timer. so with a swing mod, a good slam will get you weap dmg + 82 but only delay your next autoswing by 1.5 secs.

that's why i use slam and not heroics. the threat matters too, i guess.
