Why is World of Warcraft so good?Follow

#1 Nov 27 2006 at 12:15 PM Rating: Decent
What makes World of Warcraft so addictive? Why is it better than other MMORPG games such as Everquest? And why would you spend hours playing WoW? I'm doing a paper of this so give me your thoughts.

Probably the history of Warcraft ala the atmosphere of the game.

Cause if you actually look at WoW it's not a whole lot different then most MMO, therefore I would say the atmosphere of the game.

I enjoy playing games.

I came from Final Fantasy so the main aspect I like is the ability to solo and accomplish something. I have never left Warcraft and complained about "LFG For 5 hours and didn't get anything done" or "camped fafhog for 3 hours just to watch someone else kill it"

What I like about Warcraft at this point is I can play for a while and when I'm done I can walk away (for as long as I like) with a feeling of accomplishment. Today I gained a level and 20g, quested some reputation and obtained a better chest piece than I had yesterday.

Because it tastes like chicken.

Seriously, if this is for a term paper, you'd better come up with a better questionnaire than one question asking something as subjective as "why is WoW so good". You may want to try using something like Surveymonkey to come up with a decent fillable form.

Quoted for Truth.

If you want to make a good paper, you better get more specific.

But in short: WoW is so successful because it appeals to such a wide variety of gamers. People love it for different reasons. It is also very casual friendly.

For me personally I enjoy it for a couple of reasons. I started playing EQ1, at my brother's prompting, back in the day, but I just couldn't get into it due to the lack of direction, I guess. I couldn't get into just killing things for the sake of killing them.

Now a few years later, I see my brother playing WOW, and started to ask questions about it. From just my first look it seemed much more my style.

In WOW, there is more of a story line, and with all the quests available WOW is really what you make it. If you want to kill things, go do so, if you want to do quests, fine, if you want to group up with other people and beat down a dragon, have fun.... In addition WOW lends itself well to interaction with other players, so it brings more depth to my experiences in this little virtual world.

I believe it largely has to do with Blizzard jus tnot making a lot of the same and serious mistakes other developers do. That and it has a strong standing (the warcraft series and the company name) on which to initially build.

Everquest tries too hard to be a D&D Online game, a system too heavily built on RP mechanics. RPing is a niche audience, and while everyone can enjoy aspects of it, a gameplay system built on RPing will never be very good. WoW went a different direction, the same direction as FFXI, and built a game system and then made room for RP elements.

damn lol ... that makes it much less funny ...

well it was a sound bite:

Professor: "Good lord! According to the spectralizer, Spargel's magic ingredient was ... water! Ordinary water!"
Crew: "HU! NO!"
Fry: "Ah, so the real gift Spargel gave you was confidence. The confidence to be your best."
Professor: "Yes, ordinary water. Laced with nothing more than a few spoons full of LSD."

My first love will always be Everquest....no doubt about that. The answer to why WoW is my current choice of games comes down to one word: Fun.

It's FUN.. I enjoy the time I am playing WoW, enjoy progressing my characters, and enjoy that fact that it is a lot easier to progress than a game such as EQ. That is not to knock EQ, I came up in old school EQ, which one may call a lot more "hard core" than WoW as MMORPG's go. That is great for dedicated players and people wiht the time, and guild relationships to really progress in EQ. Im not 31 and have a pretty demading job, so I gravite to a game like WoW where I can sign on for a couple hours, at amost any level, and see significant progress. Not so with EQ.... again, with EQ, it's not EQ that I am knocking, I fully admit is but *I* who cannot hack it anymore.

I just have mroe fun in WoW.. the only thing I miss about EQ is the tight-knit, mature, awesome community they have there.

It's fun and there are no lines. No need to wait for a group when you want to play. Gold doesn't matter so much since most items are drops or rewards.

As another former "Hardish Core" EQ player, I'd have to agree with Joujouka up above.

To me, I stick with WoW because it's fun. Plain and simple. EQ was fun at times, but it became a chore for me. LFG for 3-4 hours before I could do anything was horrible. The inability to even farm for basic needs (I played a warrior...my options were limited) and the inability to get anything done on your own was a real drawback.

It's also a lot faster paced than other games. This gets you progressing faster and keeps things more interesting.

I've also been a fan of the Warcraft series before WoW (though, I don't think I ever really played 1 and 2 come to think of it...I liked them though :p). The lore tie ins between WoW and the rest of the series are the little bits that make me smile. (True, they do twist stuff around a bit to fit WoW, but overall it's pretty good).

As far as spending hours? I don't so much anymore :(. I'll run raids for the guild, and some instances on off days, but I can't really log in and stay without much else to do.

You mean besides the graphics, the quests, the overall game design, the rich history, and the ambience of the game? I guess it's got to be the players. The community within WoW is helpful and friendly, once you exclude the handful of thoughtless jerks.

I like WoW more than other games because I am good at the PvP system. I played Ultima Online for years and I was an beta tester for Star Wars Galaxies, but the PvP system didn't work for me. There is something different about WoW that I am really good at, so I like playing it. I spend most of my time in battlegrounds rather than instances and questing.

Ok where to start??? well i palyed another mmorpg with a virtual economy, i played this other game for just over a year and loved it but i could not afford to carry on playing the game the way i like to play so i left and tried to find another similar game... well i tried quite a few before i stumbled upon wow and nothing came even close to floating my boat. As it is at the moment WoW is keeping me interested and wanting to skill to find out what i can become, if i said i am tottaly addicted then i would be telling fibs, but im gonna keep on skilling and working at this game in the hope that its gonna be as pleasurable for me in the end as my old game. I do like the look and feel of this game and the graphics are 100% better, i know it has a great community from these forums although some people can seem a little nasty to new players.. not on this forum but in game on my server (everyone has to start somewhere!) I hope im gonna be here for a long time and be able to give advice back as people have given me but its gonna take a fair amount of time as this game seems a lot more complex on first impressions than my last. I would say what i was playing before but i am not sure if that is against forum rules as it was in my last games main forum so i will not say for the time being.

This game does look like its got a hell of a lot of potential and i hope i am here for a long time :D

Sorry for the long rambling post lol Elrice ;)
