I didnt even watched the movie but people that find this funny either are under 12 years old or just missing something inside their craniun.

I think the point is that regardless of why the player died, like minded players/friends decided to make a memorial gathering and some other players decided to take advantage of the event.

Maybee it would have been fun if Al Quaida had droped a couple Cessnas on top of the 9/11 memorial.

Ps: My last sentence is a sarcastic one, in no way do i find "funny" what was mentioned on the OP or by my last sentence.

..Did you just compare a death behind a wow account to the tragic events of 9/11??

someone needs to check their priorities

Woah now, back up there chief. It isn't like these guys were killing the players during a memorial. Let's keep certain things separated, like real-world events and WoW. Would you compare a Horde raid of a city to Iraq, too?

Yes, I laugh at this video. More for the musical choice than the events, but I also hold little sympathy for a bunch of players having a personal moment in contested territory and getting jumped. The loss of a friend is tragic, no doubt, and it's great they wanted to show their deceased friend some final respects. But just like I wouldn't hold a real-life wake in the middle of a nuclear test site, they too should have taken a moment to think of a better location. This isn't to excuse the guys jumping them, but if not these asses, then it would have been some other group of asses most likely.

If you actually go to the trouble of thinking about it, somtimes is hard i know, the funny/insensitive thing about this is not killing an ammount of characters in a game.

The point in my view is the disturbance of a momento which was donne to honour/remeber a real life.

The example i brough up and i knew some people might disagree was trying to get some younger people to actually think about what they do. Just because this is a game people should still have some morals and not just think that there wont be anyone that they will actually have to face irl and demand explanation from thei activities.

dude why would you even use that as a joke man.

i think it would've been more secure and less of a raid risk if they did it in a goblin town or city in a town hall or something.

edit: oops 30 post :)

I saw this video a long time ago in a different forum. Supposedly, (if that's a word), the place where they held the memorial service was her favorite place to fish.

Come on, died in real life and had a memorial in game? Thats a bit odd, dont you think, get a grip

The people in this thread who thinks this is heartless have missed one big point:

By your standards, the thing that makes us human would be our ability to care deeply for other humans.. even for animals, the environment.
To recieve and to give love, to evolve beyond our primal instincts and our ego.

The point is that kids raised today, with WAR being fed like entertainment into their brains end up with a rather diffrent set of standards.

There is nothing that is concidered cruel, the end justifies the means.

For example:

- If you kick an old lady in the face, you aren't a misogynist *******. No, you simply OWNED her.

- If you dip a kitten in gasoline and lit it on fire, you OWNED the kitten.

- If you stab a homeless person with a knife until he dies, you OWNED the bum. And that is OK see, because bums are useless to society. The kid on the other hand is accepted (Even though he probably will commit murder before the age of 18 and be locked away.) because his attitude is what fuels our modern, bleak android, consumer society.

...

If you all don't understand that this kind of cold and removed attitude towards the sanctity of OUR LIVES (wich IMO is the most fantastic improbable thing to ever come to existance) is just a way to ignore yourself, your problems and just fade away in some apathetic oblivion.. God help us, even though I'm an atheist.

Your parents should have been castrated upon birth, thank you.

( Yay, I said something violent too.. Go me. >< )

Since you might not have read my second paragraph I will again point it out, going a bit bolder and more appropriate.

Would you hold a memorial to a dearly loved one in the middle of an area known for the high rate of violent crimes? And would it somehow become a more appealing idea because at one point, this was the location they were born?

I understand she liked to fish there. I also understand this was a PvP server and the area was in contested territory. This, to me, is near begging for someone to ruin the event. You CANNOT expect everyone to be kind and remorseful of your loss in the real life (it certainly doesn't stop courts from convicting or criminals from robbing you you), so why would you assume it in a game? Is it now a secret known only to a select few that a significant percentage of people online only give a damn about their own gratification and this percentage triples when games are involved (READ: Illegal downloads, private and illegal game servers, buying gold/characters)? Did anyone, anywhere, expect the same people who'll gank you when AFK or in the middle of a battle with something far too tough will stop and let you have a private moment if you ask nice?

Err... Yeah. Young people will totally get what you're saying. Normally they think people who try and treat online life like the real world are wrongheaded, but that'll change when you compare world PvP to terrorism...

Unfortunately, us older people won't get it. Instead we'll be mildly offended you'd suggest an incident involving one person's real-life death and the MMO players' responses should in any way be equated to a terrorist act on the site of a previous terrorist act, both in the middle of heavily populated New York City. It just ain't cool, y'know?

-Edit-

And one more thing to think about, using more realistic analogies than any presented by either side thus far.

If a friend died of a drug overdose, would you shoot up at his grave? If he died playing Russian Roulette, would you shoot off a couple rounds to honor him? If he died while driving under the influence, would you cruise the spot with a six-pack?

Say your child died as a result of spending too much time playing a video game. How would you feel if the people she was interacting with so much in this video game decided to hold a memorial for her... In the video game. Possibly even the last location they saw on the monitor before calling 911. Now who is the insensitive party?

I'm not saying video games caused her death; her own negligence did that. Yet how do YOU think a grieving parent will feel about the situation?

There's plenty of compassion. The problem is, often it is misplaced. My heart goes out to the girl who died, regardless of how or why. My heart goes out to her family. Were it to happen today, I'd happily donate cash and/or time to whatever needs they may have in light of their recent tragedy.

My heart does go out to the people who, though not thinking clearly, decided to honor their friend... But not because their service was ruined. As I said, the girl died playing WoW, so showing respects by playing the same game just seems a bit of a slap in the face. They certainly didn't deserve to be jumped, but if you sleep on railroad tracks, you should know what might happen. Instead, my heart goes out to them for losing a friend.
