Some Gnome Names?Follow

#1 Jun 24 2006 at 8:31 PM Rating: Decent
I was thinking of making a new gnome rogue but needed some suggestions on names. I know most of you will say.. You won't like it if we choose for you. But I don't know I will prolly take a little bit of each...

Pick an obscure tool or scientific nomenclature.

my character has a bad name. laserstein. sounds stupid, dumbass combonation of crap. roleplaying names are alright, like for example tyrandor, but i find the best ones are ones that are kind of like names, maybe nouns, but not common ones. i know a guy called Skribbles, probably the best name i have ever heard. i made an alt called Screamo which i thought was pretty good. pick nouns that never make it into your everyday conversations that also sound kind of cute i guess.

oh and names like Zzslayerking are stupid.

Wingnut is the ultimate Gnome gname.

Yes - as an above poster said, make a list of scientific/tool/engineering words and word-parts - and play with them.

Or go the "Microdoom" route (my old EQ gnome shadow knight) - Minime - Anklechopper - etc. Most players get tired of these. The engineering/sci route is best.

You can try "Timepants" or "Thecok" , their pretty funny names.

Puntthis
Anklestabber (you said rogue, right?)
Kneecapper
Rugrat
Stupideffingmidget
Ohhhh, I think that's a little too long.
Leperchaun (in honour of his fallen comrades in Gnomer).

Alrighty then.
Seriously?
Bootstrap
Clockjitter
Compander
Gasket
Fun and exciting - actual engineering terms and parts.

The only gnome character I've ever had was a female gnome rogue called Vermine. I thought it fitted the bill quite nicely.

There's a guy on here who's gnome is named "Shinpad." I thought that was pretty clever.

My gnome warrior is a pink haired pig tailed sort named "Kiwi." How would you feel if Kiwi killed you in battle? Smiley: laugh

I don't think any name related to their height would be appropriate. Remember that to gnomes, THEY are the proper height. Naming a gnome "Shortstuff" or "Kneecapitator" would be the same as naming a human "Manzilla", "Gigantor", or "Humungous". Gnomes do not consider themselves small - they consider other races tall.

Please please please do not call him something dervied from the fact that he's short.

I agree with what the above poster said. I prefer names that actually sound like names, you know? Not something a 12 yo would use in some crappy chatroom.

Well, they're short, but they're also technological tinkerers. How about something like Fizzle McSprocket? Or Noddy Manglespanner? Or Heinrich Wingnut? I know the characters can only have a sting name, but come up with something that fits your character- imagine a personality. I named my Gnome Copperbelly (my Dwarf is Steelbelly- imagine an illigitimate Gnomish offspring from a Dwarven Hunter if you dare!). Since there are lots of copper items around, I figured it made sense.

Only reason I'm going with that is because that's my gnome rogue's name and I love that little bugger.

Mike is right. The shortie-ankle-biter gnames are impure for the reason he said.

I've only ever once named a gnome along those lines (Microdoom) - and that was because I couldn't take being a shadow knight (old eq) seriously - but wanted to try it out (he rocked).

Cog, *****, Bolt, Widget, Spanner, Span, Wrench, Socket, Plug, Spark, Wire, Wired, Switch, Tick, Tock, Gear, Nut, Batch, Core, Wing, etc.

Imo the best Gnome gnames use some sort of "tech" word, like from the above list, combined w/ something else.

From my trusty DnD book...

Male gnome names: Boddynock, Dimble, Fonkin, Glim, Gerbo, Jebeddo, Manfoodle, Roondar, Seebo, Zook

Female names: Bimpnottin, Caramip, Duvamil, Ellywick, Ellyjobell, Loopmottin, Mardnab, Roywyn, Shamil, Waywocket

Now, that's just a handful and you don't neccessarily want to pick from it. I just looked at the list, and used it as a guiding principal to make a name all my own.

Basically, gnome names sounds somewhat comical to the ears of other races as they are derived from words from the gnomish language. (an idea there, ask a gnome to talk to you in gnomish and see if something stands out) Gnomes obviously like complicated names, just like everything else. The more intricate, the better.
