I just found a few new ones... in the Un'Goro Crater, there's Willidan Marshall and his expedition. His wife, Hol'anyee, stands beside him.

This is, to me, a very obvious reference to the old Krofft show, Land of the Lost. The main characters in that show were Marshall, Will, and Holly (and I can hear the theme song in my head as I type their names).

One of the other people near the Marshalls is a Goblin named Spraggle Frock, clearly a Fraggle Rock joke.

Naglering, a rare ring, and an obvious take on Diablo 2's Nagelring. Which sucked as an item, incidentally.

Blizzard doesn't go out of their way to do too many self-referencing things... they usually do outside references. The Nagelring is, at least, a reference to Battletech.

Copied quote:
Quote:
The oldest and most prestigious academy in the Alliance, the Nagelring is the only Alliance training facility to graduate troops for all arms of the LAAF (Lyran Alliance Armed Forces). Once a SDLF (Star League Defense Force) training facility, House Steiner inherited the facility and its instructors after Kerensky's Exodus. Over the centuries, the Academy has grown to include massive exercise areas and live-fire ranges, sprawling across the Bremen continent on Tharkad. The central campus houses the accommodation and education facilities, including research labs and a massive simulator complex. These sit within a beautiful park that belies the Academy's martial role. Over the centuries, the Nagelring has grown to encompass conventional learning as well, teaching physics and chemistry in addition to martial skills. Accordingly the Nagelring has built a strong link with Tharkad University, allowing Cadets to take elective history as well as science courses at the famed Institute. As a result , the Nagelring has developed a reputation as a first-class institute of learning and research in addition to its military role.

I'm assuming that even the Battletech reference is referencing something much older - probably German or Nordic mythology.

Edit: Fixed a formatting error. =9_9=

While I haven't seen it myself, a friend was telling me about a quest he did to recieve "Lincoln's Sword of Mastery". Obviously the Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda.

2.5 more, in the badlands, the angor fortress looks *kinda* like jabba's palace, and then there's the goblin outside kargrath who has a robot named servo (mst3k?) who says "Someday I'll be a real boy!" like pinochio... Can't wait to see more highlevel stuff.

His name is mst3k?!? OMG that is histerical.

MMST3K = Mystery Science Theater 3000 - for those of you that don't know. A really funny show that had robots making fun of really crappy movies.

Now I have to go find this guy!

Here's another one from Un'Goro Crater. There's a quest to rescue a goblin who went to explore the volcano in the middle of the crater. The goblin's name is Ringo. The quest to escort him back home (after you've found him) is called, "A Little Help From My Friends." Any Beatles fans in the audience?

Not sure if this applies, but:

In Ironforge,Master Mechanic Castpipe sends you to get a Prismatic Punch Card from Gnomeregan. In order to get it, you have to get 4 other cards, and they all have a pagefull of binary code on them. I translated it so here goes:

White Punch Card
Thrall and Jaina sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Yellow Punch Card
If you can read this, you're standing too close

Blue Punch Card
The gnome king wears night elf underwear

Red Punch Card
Help! I'm trapped in a binary punch card factory!

Prismatic Punch Card
Message to Castpipe: your laundry's ready for pickup. :D

Laughed myself silly on the last one. The whole reason i braved death and dismemberment in the instance was to let him know his boxers were washed?!? man...

Well in reply to cannibalbob... Sorry, his name is Servo, just thought it might be a refernece to mst3k (or not). But did anybody notice if you view the hearthstone animation, it looks like Ryu's fireball animation (arms fold back while casting, then extended out in front of you)

"I caught a reference today while running through Theramore.

There's a Captain Vimes in the Building behind the practice grounds in town.

This comes straight out of Terry Pratchett's 'Discworld' series of books. Captain Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch is one of the main charachters. (in quite a few books, anyway.)

Highly recommended reading. Pratchett writes some really funny stuff."

He was on my morning show and his sense of observation and humor is unsurpassed.

Great thread all I love discworld too!

The Dwarf male is the russian hop-dance.

Actually, the male dwarf dance is the same dance that Fonzie did in the Weezer video.

The Russians invented that dance long before the Fonze. The Fonze is just the only american cool enough to pull it off and not look stupid :)

Actually... the dance Fonze does in the video is more of a break dance, that uses a number of splits. The dwarven dance is more of the Russian dance. I have a few Russian friends I go to the clubs with quite often. Just thought I'd add my Smiley: twocents

Here's a few more I didn't see anyone mention (but very well could have missed).

There's mention of Scooty and Sprock but no one mentions Jhordy Lapforge in Gadgetzan, the nod to Geordi LaForge from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
----
There are also multiple Ghostbusters references. I believe it's in Stormwind but there are a few folks walking around having a discussion about "crossing the streams" and how bad it'd be.

There is also a quest in Desolace where one must collect "Ghost-o-Plasm" by putting down this box that eminates light and attracks ghosts to it.

The Trolls dance is based upon the brazilian form of "fighting without fighting" Caprela(not sure on spelling) which was made from nessesity(sp) when many brazilian slaves were banned from fighting amongst their various gangs by their "owners"(not entirely sure but think thats the general "jist" of it) basically, nether opponant can hit each other, I'm totally unsure of this but would imagine that the loser would probably be the first person to hit the other, rather then the last=) Personally, I think it's a shining example of finding a peacefull way of doing things, even if they were forced!

Very true but if you speed up the dance, you can whoop ***; kinda of like flamboyant tai chi. It's only my first year in it and boy do those splits hurt!

The bankers in UC are all named 'montauge' (sp), nod to shakespear.
