It would be possible but you would end up pennyless. Stacks of copper bars(the lowest ore you can mine) where selling between 1 silver (cheap) to 5 silver (common) and 10 silver on slower days. You can end up using a stack of copper bars on one project. Then you look at the enchanting skill, the only way to get the materials for enchanting is to break down green or higher items, most of which sell (to an NPC) for a minimum of 2 silver. In the end a path like that would leave you without any money at all.

Make a miner friend and you'll be fine.

Or, if you're like me and play several different toons, have one as a engineer/miner, one as an enchanter/miner.

My setup during CB and OB worked like this:

Toon1: Hunter Leatherworking/Skinning
Toon2: Rogue Skinning/Mining
Toon3: Paladin Blacksmith/Mining

One toon acted as a "feeder" for my other two while my main crafters were simultaneously gathering as I played them as well. I played each regularly and it goes without saying that both my Blacksmith AND Leatherworker were capable of making armor/weapons that were FAR beyond my current capability of utilization.

I made a fricking fortune.

I would recommend playing two characters if you would like both engineering and enchanting. I’d recommend mining and engineering on one character and then skinning and tailoring on a second character, perhaps a cloth wearing caster class if you would enjoy playing such a class.

Mining will give you the metals you need for engineering. Skinning will provide you skins that you will also need for some engineering projects and allow you to sell most of the skins for additional funds. Tailoring will provide you with bags as well as cloth armor.

As you gain levels and start making more money, you can drop your skinning skill. As the only cost involved in skinning is the cost of the skinning knife, you won’t be out anything. You can then take up enchanting. By this time you should also be able to craft green tailored items and you can use those to level your enchanting.
