What? People are throwing up FFXI links. Thought it'd be fair to show what a WoW rogue looks like :D

Guys, stop with the FFXI posting please. This is a WoW forum, we don't need to compare THF with Rogue, because they're in completely different games.

That being said, there is no cooldown for most Rogue abilities (except for the standard two second ability cooldown that everything has) and only the energy bar limits your damage output. In parties, I usually ended up sneaking around behind the mob and dropping a nice large Ambush for three digit damage on a crit (So sue me, I was only level 19) and proceeded with a backstab, a short wait, then another backstab. Then I would slam down Expose Armour to make everyone hit better and I would continue my backstab spam. If they ever turned towards me, I'd hit feint and that usually turned them back to the tank, and if they ever started casting spells, I slammed Kick to break their spells.

As a Rogue, you'll be spending a lot of time looking at the monster, positioning yourself for the first blow and cancelling spells the monsters cast. This is different compared to a Priest who looks at hp bars, a mage who stares at his own mana bar hoping it doesn't go away before the monster dies, and a warrior who is constantly rotating her view to avoid adds. Rogues are generally considered to be the best single-target dps class in the game.

Also, we Rogues are evil bastards when it comes to PvP, because a lot of people don't look behind their backs when they're moving through contested areas. Silly Mages... they die before they can even launch any large spells on us. :D

I had the pleasure of playing a rouge in WoW, and all i have to say is wow. I dont have as much experience with it as some of the others here(only got to 12) but i must say it was extremely fun.

About the damage dealing, rouge from what i saw was one of the best DD at my level, and by far the best soloer. Can't start a battle with backstab no problem, hit gouge and then run behind and hit a backstab. Another great chunk of dmg came from eviserate. If you use all the abilities given to you as a rouge you can easily take down mobs in just a few hits.

I usually start battles with garotte, sinister strike, slice and dice, then maybe stun and backstab. usually I just sinisther strike, armor drop, and maybe eviscerate.

I played thf to 45 in ffxi just for TH2.
The problem with thf in a party in ffxi is that in order to be a reliable hate control AND dd character, you have to have a SPECIFIC party with either two tanks, or another big dd that can pull the hate off the tank at will.

If you don't have that party setup, then your hate control consists of ONE sneaktrick onto the tank.. then if you want to actually be any sort of good dd for the rest of the fight, you have to put hate ON someone other than the tank, which is usually another dd, and now you've actually HURT your tank's hate control(unless your tank can magically release aggro any time he feels like it so that you can trick it back onto him)

AND all the while you were doing this, your party was having to position themselves correctly at all times, and worry about what happens if one of your mages pulls aggro when you ready SANTA.... etc.. etc.. it's a HUGE hassle.

If your party had two tanks, then you were missing critical damage dealers to keep big exp chains alive, if you had another big dd to pull hate off the tank for your second sneak trick (or sneak trick weapon skill) chances are it was a drk or rng, both of which have JACK for weapon skills that chain with viper, dancing or shark bite.

Now i'm not saying thf was a bad damage dealer.. but if your party is daydreaming, or bad at playing with a thief, there is nothing you could do to be a good damage dealer... whereas with other damage dealing classes, your damage output didn't depend on whether or not your party members had their thumbs up their butts or not.

on to question at hand. I played rogue to 23 in open beta and it is NOTHING like thf in ffxi.. period.

The problem with thief, is that they require 1 voker, and the tank to not gather so much hate. All i hear sometimes from thiefs are "Ranodm Pld holds hate too well, and thus can't lose hate for my SATA! I am not partying with them again, they dont know how to work with a thief!"

Also, a good paladin doesn't even need a thief to begin with. A thief's SATA damage is nice to have, but they do subpar damage the rest of the fight (some mithras have been known to hit for 0 alot, since they load up on DEX/AGI gear).

/goodbye karma!
