500,000+ World of Warcraft Open Beta Test Signups! - Indoflaven on 11/11/04
This past Monday we launched the World of Warcraft open beta test, and by the following day, we had already reached a total of more than 500,000 signups! To everyone who signed up, we'd like to say thanks again for helping us make this the most extensive beta test ever for a Blizzard game. We take this as a strong indication that the gaming community is as excited about World of Warcraft's upcoming release as we are.
As for the status of the open beta test, more than 40 servers are currently active, and testing is running smoothly, with additional players completing their client installation and joining by the hour. Each server hosts thousands of concurrent users, most of whom are seeing Azeroth through the eyes of the Horde or the Alliance for the first time. We continue to review every suggestion submitted, so please keep them coming in!

Now let me state that I'm not going to bash any games here...

Okay, now before the test, there were 400,000 people testing, right? Add in the 500,000+ people and thats 900,000...

900,000...damn, that's gotta be a record MMO beta test wise. Now lets look at North America for a second here. 500,000 people signed up and playing along side the over 100,000 or so testers here. Now, in one week this game managed to be played by more people then FFXI (550k all over the world), DAoC (200k) and EQ (around 200k...let me know if I'm off...) Even though this will most likely change come retail, that's mighty impressive.

Anyways, just here to do something as my open beta downloads, making me 500,001....

On a side note, I made a boo boo and put "about" instead of "to" in the title. Silly me ;P

You won't find me complaining about lag in a free game. What I will say is that if the servers are even staying online with that many people playing, blizz is doing something right. I have faith in blizzard.

Ah please, can't you shout that around in the game please? Those people complaining are driving me nuts. And it's not just the lag, the ask questions about... well about everything. My God, I'm also a n00b, but I'm not nearly that anoing.

Ah that's a relief :P

Yeah, they do.

When I was in stormwind and the surrounding area, my chat log was entirely filled with people with names like Sieferseph and xlordsephirothx saying 'laaaaaaaaaaggggggg'. People ask the most asanine questions, too... I don't mean the understandable ones, but the ones that are answered by reading the quest log. And when you answer, they insist you guide them every little step. I mean... sheesh.

Agreed. Blizzard has this under control...wouldn't be surprised to see the lag fixed sometime today.

I've noticed no lag on the central servers.

Well, I agree that people need to shut up about lag in the general channel...

But people asking questions...there are newbs and then there are newbs. If people have played other MMOs before then they should know to do some on their own, but I believe some of these people come from the single player RPG world...where things were more linear with respect to what to do and where to go. Further...they look up and see a plethora of people who may be able to help them simply by asking, and so they do.

It think it pays to be kind to them while beta is going on. After all, we are all just hewre to test and enjoy for free. If you help a bunch of newbies out, consider it your contribution and return to Blizzard for letting you participate in a free game.

When you have paid $50 and are paying $15 a month, then complain about the questions...or better yet, just ignore them. Too much complaining as it is. Smiley: grin

EQ is not played by just 200k people. It is played by around 100-150k people at any one moment at peak hours.
