For those of you that visit http://www.worldofwarcraft.com you'll already know about the new policy.

For those that don't, here's a link to it here

The parts I found interesting were in reference to "trademark" and "immersion-breaking".

And I wonder how far the violence one will extend.

Does a name like "Deathbringer" break that rule? Or is it only the extreme case such as "Decapitator" for example.

Thoughts, opinions, gripes, support?

Personally I'm all for it. It may mean I won't be able to use Seoman (which is from a series of books) but that's okay, wasn't going to use that name for my main anyways (Seoman just doesn't say: Night Elf Hunter).

This is a fantasy RPG, so names should fall into that area.

Dammit! Roflcopter was my top choice! **** you, Blizzard!

Just wanted to add that "Deathbringer" would be allowed. Hell, a Blizzard rep said "Stabface" was a legal name. I think names such as "Fatchick" would not be allowed though.

Personally I'm glad to hear about all the restrictions, EQ had some really stupid names. Once I was making a character for a friend to show him EQ and telling him that they screen the names. Names that are rejected immediately were most likely taken and ones that took a while to be accepted or rejected were actually being reviewed so stupid names wouldn't get in. As an example I made a character named "Isellcars" and it was accepted. I was **** We laughed and played it. I really hated all the bogus names though. I did delete the character after he left.

this really bothers me and yea i forgot about numbers in front.
I think this policie is exageratting in some ways after reading this post.
I mean the blue names are complete retards they say that Jesus is not allowed but they say that Jehsus is because it is in complete different spelling.

OH YAY LETS HAVE TOTAL RESTRICTION. But when you log on to the game there is a guy npc name ****ing Captain Crunch. They also have Donkey Kong **** in Ungoro Crater. Blizz is enforcing all this is pure hipocrisy.

Nice Venting!

I had about 7 chars during the stress test. I like to have non-gay names most of the time. I try to keep it pretty serious you know? My guys were Gluttony, Pride, Envy, and Sloth(these were my serious-er ones, i was just doin a deadly sin theme there) then i had MiniJesus, BlackJesus, and RegularJesus(jesus theme, not so serious)

Names i could care less about, in retail i will stick to serious names anyway

They are doing that to help maintain the fantasy mood, but I think they are exaggerating a bit on some names like that girl who can't use "Barbie" haha. I think they should stop names like Jenniferlopez, Britneyspears, etc. lol but when I see Barbie I personally don't think of the doll it's just a girl name -_-

Hahaha I just read some of those posts in the thread you linked to, could someone post for me asking for their account if they are quitting the game because of the naming policy. ˆoˆ

Curious and no offense, but why do you need the "1" in the name 1Enforcer.

It just looks like your trying to be different from all the other people out there that might use the name Enforcer. (Hence the possibility of EnforcerX, xXEnforcerXx, and other various combinations like 1Enforcer). This is why this policy was added to prevent people with from doing so and making them put more thought into their names.

People whine too much.

If you're not able to use a certain name that you've been going by in other MMO's for years, why not just make up a name that fits the rules and would be similar to your old name? That way, you'll still be recognizable to the people you've gamed with in other games. And hell, if you've been gaming with them for so long, you probably have a way to communicate with them out of game, so why not just be like "Yeah, my character's name is *insert name here* now."?

I don't know, it just doesn't seem like that big of a deal to come up with a name that fits the criteria.

I would like to know why my name is starting to be the topic? Also I like to keep the same names that i make from other games so i can meet up with my guild in every game we play. Also i don't understand the big deal with my name. I added the one because i wanted to be the one and only enforcer in the game get it? I made this name when i was playing a game called Planetside which was about war. There is no reason why that in every game you play you have to make a new name because of the genre. I'm starting to like SOE even more everytime i read something by Blizzard. <-----I'll probably be flamed for this.

I really hope they don't change the name policy. They came up with it for a reason, they should stick to it.

What tends to happen is they cave into the vocal minority, that being the people that don't like the policy and complain vocally about it. But they don't take into account the people that don't like the policy and because they like it, they don't say anything.

On that thread that Ghija linked:

Iroar is obviously "I roar". Of course the GM was going to say no to any suggestions on different variations the person came up with, it's obvious the person was still looking to use the "I roar" combination as his name.

What he should have done was say "thank you Mr. GM, i'll come up with something else" and gone and made the name variation without checking with the GM. Just keep doing it til he finds one that sticks.

That's like asking your parents something, they say no, then you ask to do the same thing but in a different way. Of course they're going to say no.

As for Earache. EarAche wouldn't be allowed, but Earache is. Why, because like someone posted in that thread, you don't know that it's supposed to be the medical name, but if you adjust how it's pronounced it actually makes it a cool name.

I really hope they don't change the policy.

I use different names in all the games I've played and I've never had a problem finding/playing with the same people over and over. The ones I want to play new games with, I have outside means of getting in contact with. Each new game has a different "flavor" to it, so I adjust my names to match that flavor somewhat.

If I play a war game, i'm not going to come up with a fantasy or sci-fi name. Same if I play a Sci-Fi game, I'll come up with an appropiate name for that.

There have been times that I've kept the same name, but it always ends up being used for an alt or mule character. The name of my main has always changed from game to game (and WoW will be no different as Seoman isn't going to be the name of my main.)

They probably change it to be a bit more liberal when it comes to the policy. You see, the Warcraft games are known for their various pop culture references and WoW is no different. What I'm seeing from the beta gamers is that they are using what made Warcraft popular and using it against Blizzard stating it is a double standard. As a result, this kinda puts Blizzard in a corner and in order to avoid looking bad they'll have to change somethings in the policy.

While I'm not for a change, I can see the policy changing. I find it sad that these beta gamers will use something that has been in almost every Blizzard game and try to use that as a way to manipulate the way the game is played. For being a bunch of whining 5 yr olds they sure know how to play people like puppets on a string...

On a side note, the gamers are now trying to enforce the rule on Blizzard employees. *bangs head on a wall* Dammit, why couldn't I be a beta tester?! Those whiners are sooooo undeserving!

You should see how my 3 year old daughter has my Mother-in-law wrapped around her finger, it's REALLY funny. One of the things my daughter is most famous for is saying she has a "boo-boo" in her ear and need to go to the doctor. She was in-fact getting ear infections commonly at one point, but you could tell when it was really bothering her or not. Now she has tubes in her ears and they do a great job of preventing the infections. The problem is that she actually LIKES going to the doctors because they do hearing tests and other things that she now considers fun, that and the fact that they give stickers and when we're done I buy her cookies or chips for being good. My Mother-in-law is a big worrier so whenever my daughter complains about her ears I HAVE to take her and she nags the **** out of me if I don't. When I say there is nothing wrong with her though, there isn't and I'm proven right.

Yes off topic, but I had to do it.

I love how people are threatening not to play it they don't get the stupid name of their choice to call themselves by. "It's my identity, everyone knows me by it." But what happens if those names were allowed and end up taken? Then they'll quit or not play? I don't think so. They'll make something like it, but something like it is NOT the same name. Why would something like it be acceptable then? They didn't get the name they wanted, their 'Identity', they had to choose something else. People won't know it's them if it's not THAT name. You'll actually have to tell them that in this game your name is "insert-name-here".

Now, let's assume the stupid names just aren't allowed. You people with the stupid names should just pick a more **** name and tell your friends that in WoW you name will be "insert-name-here"?(sorry to those with stupid names by your own choice, but Buttpounder, PowerPufGirl, DrEvill, and such really aren't **** I am far from the only person who thinks so)).

Blizzard isn't going to go out of business because all the people who didn't like this policy decided not to play. Most will in-fact buy the game and try to make a more acceptable name. I would think 95% of the people currently complaining, whining and stating they won't play will do this. As far as the other 5% are concerned, if they don't play I'll be happier. If they are really that stupid to not play over such a silly thing, then chances are I wouldn't have wanted to play with them in the first place.

As a matter of fact, all the complaining is really sounding stupid at this point, they are all sounding like 5 year olds. I'd personally be just as happy if none of them played. There will be more than enough other people to play with. I'm sure the people with more brain-power who had a stupid name just thought to themselves "Oh well, guess I'll have to think of a different name for retail" and went about their lives as if it wasn't a huge issue at all. Silly them huh?

Wanted to add a Disclaimer: I'm not saying that all the names that don't belong in the fantasy theme are stupid, some of the are just that, names that don't belong. There are though some REALLY stupid names out there and it just makes me laugh my **** off that people are fighting so fiercely to keep them and are calling these names their "identity".

Your name is not who you are. Yes, it is a part of you, but FAR from who you are as a person. Your name is as much your identity as your Social Security Number. It's just something used to differentiate you, but it's not your identity summed up. John Smith is a relatively common name. I knew 3 people named Mike Meyers, and at least 2 in my High School(which is years ago now) who were named David Cohen(I think there WAS in fact a third though). Because there names are the same, does that in fact make them the same person? Is that the sum of their being? I think not.

I'm pretty sure my names are not gonna fly with Blizzard but I still love the policy.

I've used Superbum ever since Starcraft first came out and I used both that name and Bumzilla on D2. I've also used Superbum in FFXI and WC3.

During the stress test I had a Hunter named Superbum and a raptor pet named Bumzilla but I dont think I offended anyone and I am pretty sure no GMs saw my name.

I had others characters using Rin, Mordenkainen, Kade, and Torrek. Oh and I had a joke character who was a druid named Drewid (being my real name is Drew). Yet I knew it was a joke. If someone told me to change Drewid to something else I wouldnt have thought twice. Everyone on the Blizzard forums needs to own up and quit crying over stuff not going their way.

People keep pointing this out, but it's just a whine.

In the beginning and end, it's their game and they set the rules. Does that make them hypocrites? I don't think so, why? Because the references in question are in the game as a joke or parody. It's something you'll run across, laugh about, and then keep going. While you might say the same about a character's name, I'd agree, if it were only one, or a few. Sadly, when it comes to player characters, it will be everywhere at all times without being able to escape it. I'm not saying 100% of the people will have stupid or silly names, but certainly too many.

I am not directing this thread at you Gihja, this is meant as a generality to the people who feel this way(which may include you, but is, as I said, not meant specifically for you). Obviously a lot of people feel as you do. Also, just as obviously a lot of people like the direction this policy is taking the game. In the end though it isn't up to either side, it's Blizzard's call.

You'd probably like the name system in a MMORPG they is going to be released soon(don't have a firm date on it and I'm really not supposed to be talking about it so I just won't mention the name(or acknowledge if you guess correctly)). In this game you enter a real work name for your character, then put in a alias. In the game you are known by your alias. Because of this just about anything is acceptable(short of racial slurs or other insults etc.). Enforcer would be just fine, as well as many other names that WoW isn't allowing.

Everquest happened to have a strict naming policy in the beginning too, we all know that didn't last too long. We'll see if Blizzard sticks to it. I personally hope they do though.

You could probably answer this question yourself.

All you have to do is think if this is a name a mother in a fantasy setting would name their child.

If you go by that definition, the answer would be no. It probably wouldn't be allowed.

I doubt they will be as strict as THAT though so try it and see. Do have a back-up name(or list of names planned) so if they DO ask you to change it you don't end up with a name you really hate because you didn't have enough time to think of a better one while the GM was standing over you waiting for you to pick one.

Looking at the EQ forums I saw an interesting thread that shows exactly the kinds of names WoW is trying to avoid. While some of them are funny, they really shouldn't be in the games. Especially when there are a fair amount of kids playing. I know, kids hear plenty of curse-words and some probably talk like sailors when their parents aren't around, but some don't.

This policy is a combination of keeping a certain mood in the game and protecting people from being forced to see things they either don't need to be seeing or shouldn't be seeing.

Editting because I forgot to add the link. lol :P

Examples of names you SHOULDN'T have:
http://www.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=1&mid=109612329824455272&page=2

funny read btw.

I don't think that's really true. Many of the names they said would be allowed would definitely not be something you would name a child.

For Example:
Quote:
Just wanted to add that "Deathbringer" would be allowed. Hell, a Blizzard rep said "Stabface" was a legal name.

IF you were paying attention you would have read the VERY NEXT LINE where I wrote:
Quote:

I feel what I said was the basis for a GOOD fantasy name, but not the most realistic. Because of this it really will be a "try it and see" event when it comes to getting and keeping names. Also as I already said, have a back-up name just in case. Even a few might be a good idea.

"Deathbringer" and "stabface" are hardly names, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them used anyway. In the "Sword of Truth" series, Richard Rahl gave himself the title of "Bringer of Death", but it was just that, a title and not a name.

Those "names" are more instances where a person actually HAS a real name, but everyone just calls him "Insert silly name here"(ex. Deathbringer, Stabface, idiot, G.W.).

The thing I'm worried about is, I don't want to have a name for 30 levels and then have to change it because someone decides to complain.

I just wish there was a way to get your name reviewed by Blizzard within 3 or so days of creating it, to make sure it's okay.

There is, petition a GM once you're in the game.

Does anyone know if a name like "Judicator" would be allowed? Does that count as a title? I'd like to ask on the WOW.com thread where a Blizzard employee is verifying the legality of names, but you have to be in beta to post...

Judicator means one who acts as a judge. Since that is basically a title, I believe the name will not be allowed. Thats just me, though. If a GM sees no problem with it, congrats!
