New video card???Follow

#1 Aug 05 2004 at 5:15 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, I have a sony vaio that I got about a year and a half ago, I need to upgrade the video card, I want somthing that is excellent but not necessarily cutting edge. Somthing that is compatable with most all games, performs great yet is affordable...

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Nin

I think the first question you should ask is do you have an AGP slot in your computer. I have seen some computers from companies like Sony, Hewlet Packerd, and Compcrapt without AGP slots. I would recommend the GeForce FX 5900XT's. They only run $200 dollars or less, and are typically faster than your $150 dollar ATI 9600's.

If you don't have an AGP slot you're behind the times! Assuming you do, the best bang for your buck, in my opinion, is the ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128MB. Nowadays there are better cards out, like the GeForce 5900XT, but you'll pay a healthy extra for the horsepower.
And in my experience it's not worth it getting a 256MB over a 128MB on a video card, the framerate differences are not worth the extra price. If you decide to go GeForce, go with the 5700 not the 5600. An overclocked GeForce 5700 pro is identical to the GeForce 5800.

Ha, I had a big problem, I got UT2004, installed, then realized I still had a PCI ATI Rage 128 Pro [8MB ; ;].

Oh, how I fixed that? [since my damn motherboard for some weird reason wouldn't accept my Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400, or any other AGP-oriented cards...]

I got an ATI Extasy 9200 128 PCI graphics card. Damn thing is smokn'.

It works with every game I have installed yet, and.. handles them like a beast.

P.S. I have many games installed ^^.

SC, SC:BW, Diablo, Diablo II, DII: LoD, WCII, WCIII, WCIII: TfT, Unreal Tournament 2004, Quake 3 Arena. Oh, and, I reserved WoW around 4 months ago, so, when that comes out, you'll see it on the list also >; ).

Well, I don't have the problems most people who buy from the companies have, because I build mine. The problems I have come up when I am planning to update my computer. Especially, when you have two new chipsets that are popping up and your trying to decide whether to stick with the old technologies are go with the new. Not fun.

Best Vid card u can go for right now is the Radeon 9800 pro. doesnt really matter 128mb or 256mb they dont have real preformance differences, as weird as that sounds. (theres more to the vid card than mb rating) anyway, at newegg you can get a saphire radeon 9800pro (good company, reliable, high quality, great price) for only $200! I was planning on going with the radeon 9600xt for 140 but for only 60 bucks more u can get around double the preformance! radeon 9800pros are still in the top 5 vid cards, and at only $200? its well worth it. sadly tho the 100-150 dollar range is not a great one right now, u dont get alot of card for the price, skip to 200, u wont look back.
